Discussion Tonsil stones versus infection.

This is a bit of a discussion post, talking about the differences between a tonsil stone versus an infection. I have personally seen many posts as of late, "Is this a tonsil stone?". Nine times out of ten, it is NOT a tonsil stone. This post here is to help guide someone to know if it is a tonsil stone, or if you need to go to the doctor due to an infection.

Let's start this off with, what is a tonsil stone? A tonsil stone is a lump of calcified materials within the tonsils, also known as a Tonsillolith. Tonsil stones are benign, and oftentimes easy to remove with a gentle push against said tonsil if said stone is visible. Tonsil stones will appear embedded within the tonsil, NOT sitting on top of the tonsils. Oftentimes, the tonsil stone will not cause pain. Common symptoms can include a sensation of something stuck in the throat and bad breath. Much rarer symptoms include sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and ear pain. These symptoms are rare, and oftentimes not seen.

What is NOT a tonsil stone? Oftentimes, posts on here include images of people with patches on their tonsils. Patches are on top of the tonsils, not embedded within. Think of a scab on your arm, that's what a patch is. DO NOT touch said patch whatsoever, as that can spread the bacteria or virus that is causing said patches. There are a few main things that can cause patches and tonsillitis (swelling of the tonsils), such as a bacterial infection, viral infection, or an STI.

What is the bacterial infection? The bacterial infection is more commonly known as Strep Throat, also known as Streptococcal Pharyngitis. Symptoms include a sore throat, fevers, chills, patches on the tonsils, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. The bacteria is contagious and is transmitted through the mucus or sores of someone else with strep throat. Oftentimes, after a diagnosis a doctor will prescribe antibiotics.

What is the viral infection? The viral infection is known as Mono, or Mononucleosis. The symptoms are large lymph nodes, fatigue, sore throat, and can cause tonsils similar in appearance to those in Strep Throat. Antibiotics will not help with a virus.

What is the STD? Most STDs do not affect the throat, but the most common is Chlamydia. Though rare, it can cause symptoms such as a sore throat, mouth sores, and dental problems. Oral STDs will not look similar to Strep or Mono. Tonsils may be enlarged, but may not have patches. Oftentimes, the main symptoms will be a sore throat and swollen tonsils.

Also a note, we aren't doctors. Some of the images I've seen on here require medical attention due to the severity of the patches. It doesn't help that people keep picking off their patches. PLEASE do not touch your patches, I swear to God. You will make your condition worse. Please look up pictures of tonsil stones versus strep throat and compare the differences. Also, if your throat is sore, don't touch it whatsoever even if you're 100% confident it's just a tonsil stone.

Hello my tonsil stone having friends (and those who don’t have any but enjoy this sun nonetheless).
The other day I was browsing TikTok for tonsil stone vids as they’ve been pretty scarce here (watching them helps me fight the urge to pick my face).

I noticed something interesting about the videos there. They have insane amounts of views and quite a lot of followers. Supposedly, you can make money on TikTok just by having a certain amount of views and followers.

So I thought, why not post our own videos, follow each etc, and make some extra $ from it?
Ik others have tried here on Reddit and on YouTube, but where it’s marked as nsfw, they limit the amount you can make.
TikTok on the other hand, doesn’t mark tonsil stone vids as nsfw and therefore doesn’t impose a limit!

What do you guys think? Should we do it? Or at the very least should I? I have easily 2,000+ videos to share so xD (granted not all of them are share worthy).

Need Advice Bad Breath and Tonsil Stone? I need advice 😔 NSFW

Guys, this is such an embarrassing post for me to make but I really need a cure. I’ve had bad breath since middle school, I remember back then I had tonsil stones once in a while. Even when I took those out it didn’t really fix my breath so I guess overtime I forgot about the stones.

Now I’m 21 and I still have bad breath. Going to work feels like a humiliation ritual. I floss, brush my teeth twice, use a tongue scrapper in the morning, use Thera breath mouthwash, take oral probiotics and every thing. Nothing works, I even started taking Omeprazole incase it was GERD but even that is not helping.

Tonight my breath started to smell 10 minutes after brushing my teeth. Idk what my breath smells like however I can feel my mouth not being “fresh”. Idk how to explain it but I asked my little sister what it smells like. She said rotten eggs 😭 it reminded me about the tonsil stones I used to have as a kid. Maybe I still have those. Do you guys think I have tonsil stones?

Remedy Tonsil Transformation - Before and After NSFW

Back in 2022 I was having a lot of tonsil issues. I would get tickles in my throat that would make me cough, I got tonsillitis fairly often and would have the dreaded tonsil stone "taste."

Having no clue what they were, I consulted my primary care doctor who said I should have them removed due to the bouts of tonsillitis.

Went to the ent and he scoped my throat and said my tonsils were "fine." I do have a cyst which I thought was the problem. You can see it down low in both photos but ent also said that was "fine." But it doesn't bother me so I guess it is.

After that went nowhere, I discovered on my own that I had stones. It took me a long time to get them all out with irrigation and pore tools. But I knew there were still more so I kept at it for a few months.

The other day I found this photo of my throat (top photo, 2022) when I was trying to figure out what was wrong with it. Now I can tell there were stones in there obviously. But what shocked me was this new photo I took (bottom, with flash) where my tonsils are literally about a third of the size they were when I had all those stones! No wonder I was getting tonsillitis! Anyway, thought I'd share. Haven't had tonsillitis since 2023 and honestly feel like I'm sick less often in general. You can rehab your tonsils with some persistence.

Need Advice Cant remove stones

I've got tonsil stones embedded I think pretty deeply in my tonsils. I can only vaguely see them through a bit of discolouration on my tonsils, ive tried getting them out but can only ever remove tiny crumb sized ones. Anytime I try to remove them my tonsils also bleed pretty badly and start hurting pretty quickly so I end up just having to stop prodding at them. Any advice?? I hate the taste in the back of my throat and I am so terrified of having bad breath lol

Need Advice Swollen tonsil NSFW

I've been taking cefuroxime 500 mg 3 times a day, as prescribed by my ENT doctor, and I'm now on day 7 of an 8-day course.

The pus on my tonsil is gone, but I still have pain when swallowing, persistent swelling of my left tonsil, and a swollen lymph node on the left side beneath my jaw. The pain also radiates to my left shoulder.

Has anyone experienced something similar?I'm concerned because the pain and swelling haven't gone away despite taking antibiotics.

I’ve had tonsil stones for about two years. My tonsils look really weird, and permanently inflamed, almost unsymmetrical too. I’ve been to see the ENT Doctor 3 times, who have said they don’t think it’s anything malignant. What do you guys think?

Question Stones and ENT Visit

I have an ENT appointment next week. I have a stone it’s the first one in four years. I ordered a suction device . I kept gagging so I said in 56 year old lady and I’m not fighting with this . I have insurance and I’m not playing this game. I have been gargling with salt water and coughing to try and release . I also had strep throat infections and mono as a child . Are the stones caused by buildup of mucous in our sinus cavity ?

Need Advice 31 and all the sudden getting tonsil stones. Hundreds. And it hurts.

Hi all! New here, wish I wasn’t.

I’ve always had issues with my tonsils. Used to have strep like 5x a year. I ended up going to a super smart immunologist and got a pneumovax shot and haven’t had strep since. Sinus infections are a different story, I get those 2x a year still. Post nasal drip and all. I’d like to also note that I’m a super allergic person and even with taking allergy pills every day and allergy shots for the last 6 years. For the last 10(ish) years, my right tonsil has been abnormally large. Like to the point doctors always say how nasty it looks. I’ve just gotten used to my weird tonsil. Fast forward to last weekend. I’m just chilling in bed and feel like I had a chip in my throat. Cleared my throat several times and nothing. Go to the mirror and lo and behold I have this white thing coming out of my tonsil. Truly thought it was a worm at first.
So that first one comes out. And then another. And another. And about 40 more.
Over the last few days I’ve taken out close to probably 100. Tonight I took out 20 alone. And I can see more in there. They are deeeeeep. And I’m starting to wonder if my giant tonsil is just filled with them, because when I started taking them out it got a tiny bit smaller.

I went to an ent 2 days ago and he said to just get both my tonsils out. Said it’s the worst pain ever but whatever. Problem is, I get married in 4 months. He doesn’t have an opening till 3 months from now. The guy didn’t try to take them out, and idk if he’d be able to. They’re so deep and I have the worst gag reflex that when I take them out, I am fighting with myself not to throw up.

What the hell can I do in the meantime? I feel sick, like legit SICK from it? My lymph node is swollen, my tongue is hurting? My ear is in pain? This is the most disgusting and weirdest thing I’ve ever gone through???

Help!!!!

Need Advice Recently got stones 19F

Hey Yall,

I suffer from really bad health anxiety and I’m actively trying to beat it. However, I recently started to get tonsil stones and they have created so much anxiety for me. I never got them before and now they just randomly started. My tonsils aren’t even that big but they were apparently hiding in there. I’ve been doing everything i possibly can for my oral health (tongue scraping, flossing, therabreath) but i can’t stop worrying that these are going to last forever. They just started over the past 2 months and my brain is telling me i’m never gonna get rid of them, and tbh they aren’t even that bad. I’ve had a few big ones (one HUGE one) but mainly small ones. And I don’t have the bad breath that comes with them sometimes but i’m scared i’m going to develop it. I feel so alone and lost and honestly disgusted with myself. Any advice on how to calm myself, this takes over my life and my thoughts all day. I tried digging around but i found out that doing that can make them worse so i immediately stopped bcs since i did it so much my throat has been sore for the past 4 days… Idk what to do please help. (I am starting to take vitamin k2+d3, limiting my dairy, and drinking a SHIT ton of water)

Stone Haul Never had tonsil stones until recently when I got super sick NSFW

Post image

Went to urgent care two days ago and the doctor said I had a white spot on my throat. I half jokingly asked if it was a tonsil stone. She said no, so I didn’t bother checking.

Today I go again because of sudden severe nausea and this doctor said it was tonsil stones. I knew deep down they were since sometimes when I coughed, I swallowed something hard.

So once I got home I ran to the mirror, and I was so shocked. I should’ve taken a picture of my throat, but if you’ve had tonsil stones before you already know what it looks like. I poked at it with my finger and a piece came out, which I didn’t expect, so I started to panic slightly. Then I went at it with this q tip and good lord.

I know it doesn’t look like a lot, and I’m sure many of you have had worse. I’m surprised I didn’t gag getting these out. I saw a little more deep in a little pocket, but I started to gag so I left it alone. My tonsil is decently swollen, not from the prodding, and I’m somewhat relieved.

To those who get severe tonsil stones, I want to apologize for underestimating your struggles.

Discussion CVS Daily Sea Salt Oral Rinse For Tonsil Stones?

I have tonsil stones quite often. I feel like it happens most of the time due to me not chewing my food fully. Is that one cause of it? I have had it for years but then it stopped for a while and it's now it's bad again.

The biggest issue with tonsil stones is the feeling that something is stuck in your throat when you swallow because you know there are tonsil stones there. The only way I have gotten tonsil stones out is if I accidentally cough it out or I intentionally gag and throw up.

I then recently tried salt with water rinse as I read that helps. I done that a few times and noticed I was able to cough at a few of these tonsil stones. Recently, I coughed out several tonsil stones doing this. However, I still have 1 or 2 tonsil stones stuck there as I still feel it in my throat. I wasn't able to cough it out after salt and water rinse.

When you rinse your mouth with salt and water, you do make sure the salt and water gets touches the bottom of your throat right? Otherwise, it doesn't help? My tonsil stones are not visible if I open my mouth.

I read some people mention CVS Daily Sea Salt Oral Rinse, Arctic Ocean and how it helps. Can others confirm this works? So after you rinse your mouth with it, do you usually cough the tonsil stones out immediately? Or does it come out later? Has anyone here not had any success with it?

Is it essentially the same as you using salt and water but this is more expensive? Or is it really better since it has other ingredients? Is there any concern with swallowing a bit of it or not? I know with listerine mouthwash, you can swallow a bit as long as it isn't much.

My left tonsil and peritonsillar pilar is already bigger than my right d/t having a PTA 3 months ago. But 4 days ago I had swelling at the top of the peritonsillar pillar and over the last couple days these lumps are appearing. The soonest I can see my ENT is in 5 days. Does it look like embedded tonsil stones? Mucoid cyst? Something worse? No pain, just slightly when I swallow due to location and where it rubs

Question Will ENT approve tonsillectomy?

I’ve been getting tonsil stones every day for the past three months and that’s not an exaggeration. My tonsils have a bunch of holes in them and every day i’m taking one, sometimes up to 5 out a day. Do you think i’ll qualify to get a tonsillectomy? It’s been ruining my day to day life because I’m constantly checking and extracting tonsil stones. I’m just worried that tonsil stones alone are not enough for me to qualify for the surgery because I know that they are pretty hesitant about taking tonsils out in adults.

Had a sore throat for a couple days. Promoted me to look at my throat and saw white streaks. Never had a fever or any other symptoms (other than the usual sinus congestion that’s on and off for me; probably allergies)

Sore throat went away after like 2 or 3 days. White stuff persisted. It’d been almost 3 weeks and I spent way too much money on an ENT appt. He said it’s most likely mucus buildup / tonsil stones and not to worry just observe if anything gets significantly worse.

It’s been 2 more weeks, it’s ebbed and flowed. I’m freakin out!

Tbh, I do vape. 🙃

So I pushed on my tonsil to try and get this tonsil stone out because the area is literally swollen to the size of about a nickel. Like when I swallow it feels like there is something stuck in my throat. Now it’s bleeding and there is greyish pus/tissue, I can’t tell which one. Trying to figure out if I should wait to be able to make a dentist appointment, go to urgent care (they said they probably can’t do much), or head to the emergency room. The blood isn’t gushing, but is steady and bright red, enough to color my spit bright red. My stomach hurts bad, unsure if I swallowed a lot of blood or not and my ear on that side is very sore as well. Of course my throat is also sore.

Need Advice I can’t remove the stones no matter how much I brush

I have tonsil crypts on one side of my throat and even though I can remove some tonsil stones and I brush three times a day, I use coconut oil as mouthwash and scrape my tongue. I feel like I still have bad breath because I cannot reach all tonsil stones in the back. I also use warm salt water to gargle but it still doesn’t loosen them.

Any tips?? I’m scared of removing them through surgery. I want to try other methods first.

Need Advice Tonsil Pockets get loose? NSFW

Post image
6 Upvotes

I watched a video of someone extracting tonsil stones once, and somehow, it has now become my weekly routine. I’m able to remove most of them from the pockets of my left tonsil, but my right tonsil seems much tighter, and I can barely get anything out of it.
Has anyone else experienced this? Also, am I making the pockets in my left tonsil looser by scraping them every week, or is it normal for the two sides to be different?

Also, I’m currently using an earbud. Should I upgrade to anything specific?
