Announcement r/thepast Mod Announcement - Subreddit Discord - Updates and more!

Hello all,

Over the past few months we have been hard at work revamping the subreddit. We have added new moderators, worked on simplifying the rules, and adding features to help new members.

So where is the future of the subreddit heading? - Our goal is to keep the subreddit simple without too many limitations or rules. This is a place where people can role play as someone from the past, and even have OOC discussions. A place where people can learn more about history and random subjects while also having fun.

We are also opening up a Discord server! - We wanted to further build up the community with a place you can go to meet new people, have a more connected experience with others, and also discuss ideas and posts for the subreddit.

https://discord.gg/4NEG7Tbt2z

From the r/thepast mod team, we want to thank everyone for joining and contributing to the entertainment of us and the community!

1900s [October 29, 1960] Just watched Cassius Clay’s first professional fight

Clay won in 6 rounds by unanimous decision over Tunney Hunsaker. Clay won gold at the Olympics earlier this year and I think he has some potential and he might be a top 10 boxer in the world someday. However, I don’t think anyone’s topping Archie Moore anytime soon, as he’s held the light-heavyweight title for 8 years now.

1800s [September 1895, Madrid] I am 13 years old, and I have seen something at the Prado that I will never forget.

Papa brought me to Madrid. We came from La Coruña. My little sister, Conchita, died in January, and Mama cries a lot; but today, Papa told me we had to come and see the Prado.

There, I saw a painting called Las Meninas. It is enormous—larger than the wall of our house. In the center, there is a blonde girl who looks as if she is staring right at you. Her name is the Infanta Margaret. She has blonde hair, just like Conchita, and a white dress, the same kind Conchita wore on the day of her First Communion. Papa told me that the Infanta died a long time ago, yet in the painting, she seems alive—as if she is looking at you. As if she is judging you. There is a dog lying on the floor, it seems asleep, and a man in the background who is painting. Papa told me that man is the artist, his name is Velázquez. I don’t know how he did it, but the light in the painting feels alive—as if the air itself were moving.

I also saw works by another artist, named Goya. I saw a painting called The Family of Charles IV. It is different—darker, more intense. It depicts a royal family, but they don’t look like royalty; they look like ordinary people. They look sad. Papa says that Goya paints what he sees, while Velázquez paints what ought to be... but some of Goya’s other paintings frighten me. I don’t know. Even so, I like them both—Velázquez and Goya.

Today, I had a thought: when I grow up, I am going to paint Las Meninas again—and do it even better that Velázquez did! I will include Conchita in the painting. I will name my little sister an Infanta so that she may live forever—even if it takes me many years to accomplish.

1800s [1817] God have mercy, it’s a black day. Our sweet Princess Charlotte is gone, and the hope of Britain is dead with her. She was the only one of that rotten royal flock who cared a damn for the common folk.

Fifty hours they kept her in labor! Those fancy doctors starved her on toast and bled her dry. A proper neighborhood midwife would’ve saved her, but they were too proud to use the forceps. They’ve murdered our girl and her poor babe.

Look at the streets—every soul is in black. I had to dye an old rag with soot just to make an armband. People are weeping in the pubs, and everyone is whispering the same thing: the wrong one died. It should’ve been her fat, bloated dandy of a father instead of her. God help the Kingdom, for we are utterly ruined.

1900s [1924] The KKK are run out of Kansas at the ballot box

Post image

By 1924 the Klan had been mostly run out of the South. In some cases, like Louisiana, martial law was declared against them. It was a beautiful time. To keep the money-making machine that the KKK was alive, they went north and thrived from coast to coast.

In Kansas City that September, they held a 5,000-person national convention.

Editor William A. White, who called the Klan a “self-constituted body of moral idiots” and a “profitable hate factory and bigotorium,” could not understand what was happening. His newspaper even received many favorable Letters-to-the-Editor about what good people the Klan were. Even worse, both candidates for Governor were backed by the Klan. They favored the Democrat, but would be fine with the Republican.

White put out a petition to see if people in Kansas wanted an "anti-Klan candidate." It immediately filled up and he filed to run as an Independent, giving 104 speeches in 6 weeks.

He lost the race, but many who he endorsed were elected. This included the incumbent anti-Klan attorney general who was set to go to trial against them.

January, 1925: It was ruled that the Klan had to leave the state of Kansas due to being a Georgia corporation. They applied for a state charter and were denied.
