My Thoughts on Sunrise (Arc 3 Book 6) *SPOILERS FOR ARCS 1-3* Spoiler
PLEASE AVOID SPOILERS FOR ANYTHING THAT COMES AFTER THIS IN PUBLICATION ORDER
(Arc 4, Bluestar's prophecy are the next in terms of Publication order if that helps)
I made one of these posts about a week ago just to get my thoughts out somewhere and maybe start a discussion. I recently finished the third arc and was pleasantly surprised to find out that Power of Three does not in fact peak with Long Shadows. Like the other post, this has pretty heavy spoilers for everything up to this point in the series (Insane how the naming conventions mean names become spoilers)
Twolegplace & also Midnight just being gone
I was frankly super disappointed that Midnight was just nowhere to be found during this segment of the book. I know the mission was about retrieving Sol, but it would be cool for living clan cats to know that she was the reason Sol had all this knowledge of the future. Actually, now that I say that, I realize it would have killed the plot unbelievably fast if that happened. I get it now.
Jingo and the "clan" living in the abandoned twoleg nest wasn't a highlight when I was reading, but when I looked back over the novel as a whole, I kinda appreciated it. It was a good example of how the code isn't necessary for cats to live in harmony, and it was pretty touching when Brambleclaw called her Jingostar, even if it kinda contradicts the idea that the code isn't essential. The rogue clan was also a good demonstration of the type of damage that Sol does to communities if left unchecked. Poor Speckle. This is one of the segments I am most interested to hear opinions on. Did people like this part? It did kinda kill the tension sometimes to switch back to the twolegplace when Jayfeather had just discovered a new clue.
(Also Lionblaze is a nutjob for trying to solo like 9 dogs. Thank god Jingo showed up)
Honeyfern :( (& Birchfall)
Not much to say, but I felt like this deserved a section. Downright unethical to murder Honeyfern with a snake about two pages after she said she'd like to be a mother with kits. I hate Berrynose as much as the next guy, but why did this snake have to bite Honeyfern instead of him? And what was Leafpool staring at Cinderheart to do? Cinderpelt never saved anyone from a snake. She'd have been no use.
Birchfall was despairmaxxing dude. I just thought it was funny that he saw the dogs and immediately starting freaking everyone out by talking about how he'd never see his kits or wife again. Maybe funny isn't the right word but it was just such a deeply unsettling thing for him to be saying. Like keep that thought in your head buddy. You're gonna freak everyone else out.
Sol & Purdy
Ok, does anyone else feel like Sol could have just... not been in this arc without anything changing? He does one important thing in the duration of all three books he's in, and that's when he warns Thunderclan of the eclipse before it happens. And even that really led to nothing. Blackstar was already having a faith crisis, and the author definitely could have had him lead Shadowclan away of his own accord. He tells the Three that they have great power, to reshape the warrior code, but the prophecy already told them that, and the idea of existing outside a code was not foreign to them when he said this. My only assumption is that Sol ends up causing more problems later in the series (I get to read Bluestar's prophecy before arc 4. Hyped for that)
I was as happy as anyone when I realized they were bringing Purdy back to the camp with them, but it was frustrating that he was welcomed in with so little protest. Think of when Cloudkit or Daisy's kits were introduced to the clan. Everybody was pissed the freak off, and it still earns them snarky comments from some of the less open minded cats. But Purdy just walks in and becomes besties with Mousefur! It's not that big a deal, but it seems like a bit of an oversight. (Or maybe it's more relevant in arc 4. Who knows)
Leafpool & Jayfeather
After some thought, I have come to the conclusion that her cold behavior towards Jayfeather was just because of her incredible paranoia about him digging into the secret of his birth, and maybe a bit because of what she knew about Hollyleaf, but I'm still not satisfied. It seems like I missed something more that was interfering with their relationships. It was just so out of character when I read the scene where Leafpool beats the brakes off of Jayfeather for some "training" (W mom, Leafpool. Beating your blind son. Mother of the year).
Jayfeather investigating his birth was probably some of my favorite writing in the entire series so far. I had it put together since Outcast, but I think that actually enhanced my enjoyment of the rest of the arc. The authors are pretty heavy handed with the dramatic irony, but it's ok because of how humorous it makes reading the inner monologues. It's really cool how Jayfeather has matured and become a tolerable character through this arc. I was really worried that he was a POV character in The Sight. Couldn't stand him. Now I'd say he's my favorite of the Three. He had a pretty rough time in this book. Starclan made zero progress towards redeeming themselves by telling him to piss off and solve the mystery himself. What does Starclan even do? Freak those guys
Lionblaze
I don't know if his story beats were timed right. It was a strong opening to the book for him to defeat Tigerstar in cat hell, but it left him with no real struggle to contend with throughout the book. He seemed to care the least about who his parents truly were, so he felt a bit like a passenger in this book. I was OK with it, because he hogged a lot of the page time in the other parts of this arc, but I think it would have been better for the confrontation with Tigerstar to happen closer to the end of Sunrise. Other than that, nothing much of note happens with him. I guess Breezepelt is with Heathertail. Hopefully Lionblaze doesn't go Ashfur mode about that.
Hollyleaf
This entire arc I have been begging the authors for more Hollyleaf, but they haven't given it to me until now. She doesn't do much for the first 70% of the book, but once she starts going, she goes hard. I was wondering why they were trying to make Ashfur's death such a mystery after they made it so obvious that Squirrelflight did it in Long Shadows, so the scene where Leafpool and Hollyleaf confront each other went insanely hard. At first I thought Leafpool was mistaken, but then I had to reread the scene like three times because I could not believe what I was reading. It's mental to reveal a POV character offscreened someone just like that! I kinda have beef with Hollyleaf about how she handles Leafpool being her mother, but I can't judge her too harshly. They did lie to her for her whole life.
It was tragic to me when the author first assassinated Hollyleaf's character, and then assassinated her literally. She was being set up to be a very compelling character with different opinions than the other MCs until she tried to make her mother kill herself in the worst possible way (The only explanation is that the author was on substances). I feel like Hollyleaf could have done so much more in the story if they hadn't killed her off so soon after she became interesting.
Consequences of the Secret Getting Out
Crowfeather is a bum like he always is. I have a soft spot for him, but he makes himself hard to like. He clearly has depression or some other mood disorder, but he's just so, so awful to the people who love him. I guess it's a good thing that he is so fiercely loyal to Nightcloud and his son, even if he doesn't always get along with them. He was unnecessarily cruel to Leafpool and the Three though. I think he knows he's their father. He just can't accept it.
Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw have rough times ahead. They kinda split up after Brambleclaw expressed how betrayed he felt, but I really hope they stay close to eachother. Brambleclaw being angry and sad about this are completely valid, and she definitely should have told him, but it would be such a shame for them both to lose everything over this now that the secret is out. Time will tell.
Leafpool just kinda pisses off? Obviously it was really sweet what she said about never regretting having her kits, and how she will always love and be proud of them. Brought a tear to my eye. But after the second confrontation she has with Hollyleaf, she's not mentioned again. I am really concerned she ran off to die someplace. I was expecting a happy-ish ending for most of this arc where the Three realize they love Squirrelflight and can come to love Leafpool despite their complicated genetics, but it's pretty clear that's not going to happen now. I thought this was a kid's book, but this one was so incredibly dark.
Hollyleaf is (maybe) dead now. I hope she escaped in the collapsing tunnel, and isn't really dead. She was really starting to become interesting right before she died. It seems out of character for Jayfeather to move on so fast and instantly start wondering who could be the Third in the prophecy. I expect Dovekit and Ivykit will be the MCs of arc 4. Should be cool.
I don't think I missed anything big, but if I did, you should bring it up in the comments! Also if you have any advice for writing more of these. I'm very inexperienced at writing anything.
