Football Maryland football reached a new low under Michael Locksley in loss to Rutgers
If Maryland football fans hadn’t already reached their limit, Saturday felt like the final straw.
The Terps built a 10-point halftime lead over Rutgers and appeared primed for their first Big Ten win at SECU Stadium since Oct. 19, 2024. But closing out a victory against a fellow conference bottom-feeder proved too much to ask.
Maryland surrendered 24 unanswered points and couldn’t quite rally, losing 37-30. The defeat marked the Terps’ 12th straight loss in conference play, a Big Ten high. It also signified a new low point under Michael Locksley, whose support has dissipated.
“I won’t even get into that,” the eighth-year coach said when asked what he wants his Maryland tenure to be remembered for if Saturday was his last game. “I’m here for these players, [I’m] super convicted. The only thing that I’m concerned about is doing my very best for them until they tell me I can’t. Those players continue to give me their best. I’ll continue giving my best.”
That “best” hasn’t been good enough for years.
Locksley has a 16-47 record in Big Ten play since his latest coaching stint began in 2019. Maryland has a 2-20 conference record since the start of 2024, capped by the ongoing 12-game losing skid.
