మాటామంతీ - discussion Looking for Telugu Tutor
I'm an American guy, a total beginner; I don't know any Telugu yet. My girlfriend is from Andhra Pradesh, and her mom speaks mostly Telugu with very little English. I want to learn to actually hold a conversation with her mom, and surprise my girlfriend along the way.
Looking for a tutor for online 1-on-1 lessons, maybe once a week to start. I'm a slow learner so I need someone patient who teaches adult beginners. Focus on spoken/conversational Telugu, Andhra dialect.
Paid, of course, tell me your rate. I'm on Central European Time, usually free in the evenings.

అరగలి - ప్రశ్న - question ❓ Why is శ pronounced as శె when it comes at the start of a word
This also extends to చ too. only noticed in the sanskrit loan words which start with చ but when it is ౘ there is no ఎ sound.

అరగలి - ప్రశ్న - question ❓ About Telugu works of literature from Pre-Nannayya era that were lost

Both of these poets were apparently from an era before Nannayya and probably contemporaries of Malliya Rechana, probably in the 10th century or so. Some eminent scholars, like Veturi Prabhakara Sastry and Nidadavolu Venkatarao, say they are none other than Pampa and Ponna of Kannada literature. And these are the only padyams written by them which were preserved in another 14th century text (or more like a compilation) called Prabandha Ratnavali. So maybe they were still available until then. My question is why are they lost now and is there any way of obtaining them in this day and age? Can we have any luck through going through unread telugu (or possibly kannada) manuscripts?

(Modern Telugu Lexicon)

ఇతరము - other [teluguhistory.org] I built a free, fully cited history of the Telugu land: 1,000 pages in English and Telugu.
galleryteluguhistory.org is a free, non-commercial history of the Telugu land: the unified Andhra Pradesh region of Telangana, Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. It runs from the Stone Age and Asoka's edicts to the two states of 2014, and every page is in both English and Telugu.
What makes it different: every sentence is footnoted to a published source, with the printed page number, and most footnotes link straight to that page of the scanned book on archive.org. You don't have to trust the site; you can check it.
What's in it
- Main pages: 986, made up of 51 dynasties, 387 people, 213 places, 78 monuments, 228 inscriptions, 10 eras and 19 themes. There are also 51 maps and a 13-lesson course on reading old inscriptions.
- Sources: 17,100+ footnotes citing 608 sources: district gazetteers, Epigraphia Indica, archaeology reports, inscription corpora, census handbooks, old histories in English and Telugu.
- A timeline of 69 powers across the three regions, with dates exactly as the sources give them. Where sources disagree, the page says so and shows both.
- About 1,700 images (gallery). About 1,400 of them are plates and drawings cropped straight from the old books (many you won't find elsewhere online). The rest are freely licensed photos from Wikimedia Commons, all credited.
- Simple English aimed at readers for whom English is a second language, and natural Telugu.
Where it comes from The research library is about 4,400 scanned books and documents, roughly 1 million pages, mostly from open archives:
- the Internet Archive (including the Digital Library of India scans);
- Wikisource and Wikimedia Commons;
- old government gazetteers and archaeology reports.
Pages without a text layer were read with OCR (including Telugu). The whole library was then indexed for search.
Tools
- Search (also works offline: install the site as an app on your phone, then tap "Make search work offline" on the Search page)
- Installable app: "Install the app" at the foot of any page on Android, or Add to Home Screen on iPhone. Pages you open stay readable without internet.
- Practice quiz: 608 questions by topic and level. Each answer shows the cited point it comes from. It's useful for APPSC, TGPSC and UPSC prep, and for the curious.
- Glossary of 433 special terms (peshkash, jagir, agrahara, Fasli…), plus 14 reading guides. Everything for study is gathered on the Learn page.
- Maps you can zoom into, with places that spread apart as you zoom.
- "Ask an AI with our sources": type a question, and the site finds the matching passages on its own pages, with their footnotes. It builds a ready prompt that you paste into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, and the prompt tells the AI to answer only from those passages and to cite them.
- It costs nothing and is private: nothing is sent to us.
- It works offline in the app.
- Coming next: a "Smart" mode that searches by meaning (vector search) across the whole library, and later an optional built-in chat. Still work in progress
How the facts are checked
- Every page went through several review passes: source checks, simple-English rewrites, and a separate check that every identification ("X is the same as Y") names the scholar who made it.
- An automated citation check is running now: about 40,800 cited sentences are being matched against 1.16 million passages of the scanned books using AI embeddings, to pinpoint the exact supporting passage and catch wrong page numbers. An earlier pass already fixed 18 page links.
- All corrections are public, on the Updates & corrections page and its RSS feed: what a page said before, what it says now, and the source that settled it.
Open data
- The public-domain sources are now a free dataset on Hugging Face: https://huggingface.co/datasets/opentelugu/telugu-history-public-domain
- What's in it: 529 checked public-domain books and documents: 165,540 scanned pages and 277,360 passages (about 71.7 million words, about 13,300 of them in Telugu script).
- With every page: a link to its scan on archive.org.
- Optional search vectors (bge-m3), so others can search by meaning without days of computing.
- Licence: CC0.
- What can't be shared: many more books are cited on the site but are still in copyright, plus Indian government works that are public domain only in India. Their text can't be shared, but the dataset's
sourceslist names every source in the library (about 4,250), with its licence and whether its text is included. More books will be added as each one's copyright status is checked. - Behind it, a database of the whole library is being built: every page of every book, about 1.16 million searchable passages so far. Telugu books scanned without text are being read with OCR next. It already powers the citation check, and it will power the coming "Smart" search and chat, so answers can draw on the original books, not just the site.
Copyright
- Our text, maps and charts are under CC BY-SA 4.0: share and reuse them with credit.
- Old books are quoted only where they're in the public domain. Other works are summarised in our own words and cited.
- Every image is public domain or openly licensed, with credits on the Attributions page.
- No ads, no tracking scripts, not affiliated with any government.
A few things I learned building it (each with sources on the page):
- At Kotilingala (Karimnagar), excavators found what their report calls the earliest inscribed coins of the Deccan. The coins include ones naming Simuka, the first Satavahana king.
- The Kalamalla pillar (about 575 CE) was called by its 1956 editors the first complete inscription in Telugu then known, though earlier Pallava records already contain Telugu words.
- Rudramadevi ruled under the male title Rudradeva Maharaja. The historian Hultzsch identified her with the unnamed queen Marco Polo praised for her justice.
- The Thousand Pillar Temple dates itself: its own inscription is from January 1163.
- At a diamond mine the editor V. Ball identified with Kollur on the Krishna, the traveller Tavernier found close to 60,000 people at work. He was told the great diamond Mir Jumla gave the Mughal emperor came from there.
- The Musi flood of September 1908 carried away arches of three Hyderabad bridges.
- Arthur Cotton's Godavari anicut (1847–52) and the Krishna anicut (1852–55) turned the two deltas into irrigated rice land.
About AI: AI helped me draft, translate into Telugu, and check pages. That's exactly why everything is footnoted to the book page and checked against the sources, both by review passes and by the automated check above.
I'd love corrections. If you spot a mistake, a better source, or a gap (freedom fighters, poets, local history from your district…), every page has a "Report a mistake" link, or use the contact form.
