Just a matter of time before this is shut down

u/smith7018 11h ago
It's homebrew for a jaiblroken PS5; Sony can't do anything to stop it.

u/VonVader 10h ago
You mean other than it is illegal?
89
u/Memonlinefelix 10h ago
Its not illegal. Emulation is not illegal.
12
u/VonVader 10h ago
Yeah, scratch that comment. I went back over the DMCA and it appears that this is legal for legally purchased games.
73
u/yousurroundme 10h ago
Lmao even if it were illegal, who cares

u/smith7018 10h ago
I tend to be pretty moralistic but the concept of "Oh, won't someone think of the legality of playing a 25+ year old game ROM" is quite funny to me lol. Like, who's it hurting exactly? There's a decent chance that many of the people working on that game have retired at this point

u/Unlucky-Tale-3387 8h ago
Not only that but rhey dont make nor sell the games anymore on disc. So the only way to get them is to buy them second hand, which means the money doesnt go to Sony nor the developers anyway. So whats the harm in cutting all that out and going for emulation? Lol

u/I_think_Im_hollow 6h ago
But... But, you could be buying some new stuff on the store if you weren't playing some 20 years old game.

u/VonVader 7h ago
I guess when I think of things that result in jail or serious restitution, I always thought it might be for something bigger than playing GT2 on my PS5.

Who cares? Laws like these lose their legitimacy when a company can sell you a game and take away your right to play that game you purchased.

Another reason to hate Sony, their greed and laziness sickens me. Could of had amazing PS5 generation of with backwards compatibility to levels unseen since PS2 but instead they focus garbage like Concord and FairGame$.

u/Jaugusts 8h ago
Yeah it’s hard to wanna stay with PlayStation, from the ps plus price increases, lack of first party games, and no discs it’s just awful

u/lonevine 2h ago
The problem is you're thinking like the long-time, loyal customers who have supported Sony's platform for generations of hardware and games. They aren't. That stuff is old, and so are you. Now buy more, and own nothing. That's your job to them.

u/SomeRandomAccount66 7h ago edited 6h ago
Yup. The PS5 can play every PS generation games. The twist is that only PS 4/5 games can be played by disk. PS 2/3 games can only be played by having Playstation plus or digitally renting(sony calls buying) from the Playstation store until it's not longer available.
PS1 can't be played by disk due to the optical drive in the PS5 only being able to read DVD/Blue ray.
Edit: Corrected to add Ps1 is not possible by disk

u/not_a_moogle 5h ago
Backwards compatibility was a main selling point to me. If ps5 had Backwards to 2 or 3, I would have absolutely bought it.

u/IrieMars 6h ago edited 4h ago
I thought it couldn't read CDs so no PS1 games right?
1
u/SomeRandomAccount66 6h ago
Whoops that is correct. My fault there. The PS5 optical drive Can only read Blurays and DVD.
13
u/FatherGwyon 7h ago
I’m still pissed that my PS4 can’t play PS3 or PS2 games. When I bought it, I assumed backwards compatibility went all the way back. I used to play more PS2 games on my PS3 than actual PS3 games.
11
u/king_john651 6h ago
Fun fact: only the first model of ps3 had compatibility with ps2
4
u/llliilliliillliillil 3h ago
And even that was dodgy at best, even though it had the PS2 chips inside of it.
5
u/imtalkintou 3h ago
I get being upset about not having backwards compatibility, but anyone who follows a console for multiple generations would have known this.

Man, the implications of all of this has really has me wondering what is about to go down in the big tech industry. You guys are absolutely insane if you think big tech is not about to lobby or move on this and try to legally bully their way into changing something.
Really I am more interested in seeing how this impacts copyright laws and infringement with A.I. companies like Meta and Google are using the Fair Use doctrine (17 U.S.C. § 107) to essentially argue that A.I. is not infringing on copy right of data or others work like music, art, code, etc.
Now it's a question of whether they can really continue to make that argument legally. If Sony sues Claude for reverse engineering their products it is clearly going to fall under copy right infringement. It has to there are laws this could literally break by jail breaking the device. Not the emulation itself. If Google says, "okay well maybe we are infringing on copy right or A.I. is liable," Then how do you even approach this in a way that doesn't let a musician or artists or writer now also sue you?
What does this mean for Adobe? If Adobe and write that Google is infringing on copy right of its app data by having a tool that reverse engineer their app breaking their TOS does that then open up the avenue for someone to do the same.
What about royalties if you argue that an app like Adobe's must pay Adobe for looking and functioning like Adobe what is to then stop me from building my own app and making that same argument against Adobe?
This shit is cool and wild but there is absolutely going to be something big come from this and it has to be on the rise. It's really a matter of does the consumer win in the end?
EDIT 1: there are a couple of you that don't understand how laws work along with companies with lots of money. There is high potential these companies chase after reverse engineering protections and laws and I just went to inform you laws can be changed and amended entirely and you might want to do some studying up on how that works.

I mean, I had a hacked ps1 before the ps2 came out that could play burned isos. I had a Dreamcast that could play burnt disks natively. The switch has had a huge piracy scene from very early on. Nothing makes me think the status quo is going to change. Once a wall gets toppled it stays toppled
1
u/wrongstep 3h ago
This is a little different, those hacks were not as easily available during the time those consoles were being sold, and once a new generation of consoles started, everything with the old generation would be obsolete.
Nowadays, the same account system and purchases carry over from console to console, and the cross gen periods last most of the generation. It's going to be very awkward for Sony to sell a PS6 and software that's available on both PS5 and PS6 when the console is blown wide open.
Nintendo had to deal with this on Switch 1, but they've made their cross gen period almost non-existent and they can do that because people will accept they have to buy the new console for their exclusives.

u/jlharper 2h ago
Out of curiosity, are you very young? I only ask because I had a chipped PS1 in 1997, years before the PS2 released, and also had a chipped PS2 in 2001, over 5 years before the PS3 released. Both could play burnt games for majority of the console lifecycle. I also had a DS that could play pirated games very early in its lifecycle, and a switch that could play pirated games years before the Switch 2 released.

If Sony sues Claude for reverse engineering their products it is clearly going to fall under copy right infringement.
Doubt it, all AI is doing in this regards is doing this process faster. Humans can and have reverse engineered software just at a slower speed

u/jazzy663 8h ago
Here's the neat part.
"Rules for thee, not for me."
They'll find a way to enforce copyright like this.

u/ssv-serenity 3h ago
Pretty much every company is reverse engineering their software and making their own now to avoid licencing. The gravy train of price gouging licences is over (for now)

u/The_real_bandito 9h ago
I wonder what the computer specs of the computer you will need to run this emulator are. RPCS3 is one that needs a beefy computer.
16
u/trigonated 9h ago
I think you might've misunderstood the article: this is a PS2 emulator that runs on the PS5, so I guess the specs are...whatever a PS5 has?
PS2 emulation is not that heavy nowadays anyway, and is viable on phones.

u/EvelynNyte 9h ago
PS3 was the last one to really use specialized hardware right? It's probably relatively easier to emulate 4 and 5 although this isn't something I really follow closely.

u/antiestablishment 7h ago
I wanna see the statistics of how many actually do this and how bad it affects Sony
1
u/Pitcard 1h ago
I would imagine, not many, and not much in the way of lost sales. They've lost a bit of face, but people have been doing this forever so it was only a matter of time. With all the bad PR they've had lately, I would say they're more a victim of bad timing.
I'm not very knowledgable with jail breaking things, or even what this process entails, and I've been gaming for 30 years and occasionally dabbling with emulators. The idea sounds really cool, but I'm 99% sure that the process of doing this is just not feasible for the average gamer.

Is there something different between this and the emulators that have been available for 20 years?

Can't wait to jailbreak! Thanx for this.
last week I found a ps5 that I thought I lost 2 years ago during my move. Now to jailbreak for a great ps2/ps1 machine

Omggggggg. I'm hammered so I'm gonna be honest. These corporations are a word I can't say. However, just giving "fan service " goes a long way. Backwards comparability would have easily sold a ps5 pro to me. However, their greedy sales scheme has completely turned me away from sony as a company. I'd 100% emulator gta6 when it comes out through a homebrew. It sucks it had to be them but hey. I like to be wined and dined before I get fucked.

u/heroism777 10h ago
That’s cool. I don’t want to play ps2 games.
But it’s neat you guys wanna go back in time and play old games.
14
u/lorenzoelmagnifico 9h ago
This allows people with PS2 games to play them on their PS5, which Playstation does not natively support. So anyone with an old library and a broken PS2 can bring these games back to life. This is great news.
5
u/Calik 9h ago
I’ve always disliked that even the ps4 could have played ps2 games natively at the flick of a switch and Sony chose to never flick it. This unlocks the hardware to be able to do something it could have always done. Of course the reason they never did is because they want to sell the iso to you again but the fact it could run them at all was proof that it was a manufactured limitation.
2
u/lorenzoelmagnifico 9h ago
The Xbox Series X can play some original Xbox games with the disc. They just rolled out the disc to digital program. For all their faults, they clearly are the more customer focused platform.
1
u/properfoxes 7h ago
the company that is currently 'losing' the console war is always the most customer focused platform, historically. when sony was losing they also made much more customer friendly decisions.

u/PhoenixTineldyer 7h ago
"hey guys, did you know that art becomes obsolete after the next console releases? Look at all these fucking weirdos who play things that aren't Fortnite and Wolverine"
34
u/ICPosse8 10h ago
Can you actually copy it to storage and play from there without a disk??
