Our world would be in a much better place without billionaires.
63
u/ecmcn 12h ago
I’ve always been pretty centrist wrt to markets, capitalism, etc - a freedom with guardrails kind of guy. But at this point if we had a law that said a billion dollars is the upper limit to wealth I think I’d be ok with that. Or even $100M. It still allows for more wealth than a person would ever reasonably need for the rest of their life, and something for entrepreneurs to aspire to.
4
u/Swoly_Deadlift 6h ago
Gotta make sure it’s adjusted for inflation though. Maybe cap the wealth at a level equal to 10,000x to 100,000x the median individual wage (about $660M to $6.6B). That would encourage wealth distribution if the billionaires want to accumulate more wealth than that.
18
u/Raxor 12h ago
The more it goes the more im convinced it is an illness.
11
u/WhoCanTell 9h ago
Psychopathy is basically required to accumulate that much wealth. You have to not care who you hurt, see everyone around you as simple resources to exploit to your benefit or obstacles to be crushed and overcome.

u/drckeberger 12h ago
Yup.
It was good times when people were happy having a job that pays a simple home amd food for your family.
Now it‘s just more, more, more.

u/DTFH_ 12h ago
I agree but the funny part none of them are realizing is even those in the lead like Elon, if it hasn't happened by 2T why do they think it will happen at 4T, 6T, etc?
We've faced these types of people thousands of times throughout history, their greed is the delusion and they act from a delusional place. The cost of acting from delusion is an inherent disconnect from reality, that disconnect from reality provides the space which can be used by the people in response to delusion. Delusions are predictable and consistent.
2
u/east_van_dan 12h ago
"that disconnect from reality provides the space which can be used by the people in response to delusion".
Okay.. and what is the appropriate response to the delusion?

u/duhlishus 9h ago
Relational organizing and other grassroots strategies to build support for progressive politicians. Billionaires are so delusional that they think they can just keep buying elections. The reality is that their careless spending only draws attention to the problems they are causing, which energizes grassroots efforts, building enough momentum to beat billionaire and corporate donor fueled campaigns.
Just look at what Angie Nixon did in the Florida Primary Election. She refused all special interest donors, was out-raised by her opponent 16:1, and she still won the election.
10
u/AP3Brain 12h ago
B-b-but did you see Tesla's new rocket car!? It's so exciting seeing how billionaires use their money to play with toys instead of maybe solving actual issues plaguing society.

548
u/ActiveCollection 13h ago
Yeah but we are dumb. Otherwise we would already be fighting against big platforms. But we don’t. We use them.
“We” as the majority of people. Sure there are exceptions. But big platforms can manipulate people into voting for specific politicians. And it works perfectly.
157
u/CHERNO-B1LL 11h ago
That's not fair. People aren't dumb, they are asleep. This is what "woke" originally meant. How did that phrase become a punchline? Social media, AKA "The Matrix".
It keeps us mollified and confused and scared and angry and despite promising to "connect the world" it became a way to control the world by making everyone a victim of the bystander effect. Passivity by connectivity. Millions of people ranting into the void about every social ill and threat and conspiracy and tragedy and injustice. "We have to do something" said by a million people seems like something is happening when in reality nothing is.
It's a pressure release valve in the same way court jesters were not only allowed to mock the king, but were instructed to do so in order to quell rebellion.
The same thing applies to class war. Social media has created an illusion of wealth and success and enviable lifestyles, most of which is an oruboros of people going into debt in order to look successful. We all assume because you and I are educated, and clean, and well fed, and pro-social just like the 1% we are closer to them than the dirty homeless guy on the streets, but we're not. Not even close. But we can see inside their homes and follow them on social, and leave them comments, and tag them just like they are our actual friends who we see and engage with LESS than these para social celebrity relationahips on these platforms. It is infinitely higher to climb up to their height than it is to fall to his low.
My last point is that this is the point. Hopelessness and confusion resulting in apathy is the grand plan. Because pessimists don't protest or organise or build guillotine.
People aren't dumb, you thinking that is what they want. We are asleep but we can wake up. Their power only extends as far as the edges of the internet. The more we go offline and into out communities the less power they exert.
27
u/mabden 9h ago
Back in the day "are you with it, man" was the equivalent of "woke" today. Being aware was the stated goal.
The alt right made woke a dirty word (the same way they made liberal) through constant/consistent phrasing and propaganda.
2
u/Smoking_In_The_90s 5h ago
Funny how the principals of classic liberalism is what many republicans claim to be for. Without using that dirty L word of course.

u/climbtheworldd 11h ago
A person is smart. People, however, are stupid.
2
u/Western-Hour-5061 6h ago
Nah, this is BS because there would be a lot more indviduals rising for whats right if that was true.
No, you ask a crowd of idiots a stupid question you'll get your stupid answer. Anyone in the crowd will give you a different answer individually because they want your approval, theyre just as dumb individually, they just have a different social motivator in a solo scenario.
9
u/ActiveCollection 10h ago
We (again majority, society whatever) use those tools because they are convenient, used by our peers etc. Network effects are also a great barrier to leaving the platforms. But.. people want free accounts, easy-to-use tools, they don’t care about privacy, about big tech power. It’s not like they are not aware. They don’t care. If you explain the implications of big tech to an average person, you will get the answer, “Yeah, hmm. I don’t know. I don’t have anything to hide. Other platforms are for nerds.” Like with all things which harm us, we are stupid enough to ignore the risks and believe the media and advertisers that everything is fine.
You can believe that people have to wake up, that they are asleep.. whatever. But we will lose the war against Big Tech. Because we (again, the majority of people) don’t even want to fight.
6
u/Charlietango2007 11h ago

What they have up on us is lockstep class solidarity. There's magnitudes more of us but we are incredibly divided politically, financially, culturally in ways that they engineered to make it hard for us to get at least a similar enough page to do something as bout them.
Thankfully this had made them so hubritic they think they can get away with increasingly my bold violence against us because they're sure we're too dumb to fight back effectively despite all the labor needed for everything they have as well as all the innovations, entertainment and culture they want more of depending on all of us.
They forgot how humans actually work because they stopped being human to become associated to greed above all else like fucking dragons and that is going to be their downfall. People will come together to slay dragons when they threaten what little we truly have.

This is why the most advertising spend = win elections. The problem is the idiot masses who are dumb enough to be swayed by whatever propaganda is shoved in front of their faces the most often. Basic education is needed to understand and compare the candidate policymakers in a competent way. The problem is the voting masses being a large swathe of idiots, the oligarchs pumping money into ads to sway elections and win is the symptom

We are fast approaching a time when these tyrants can rely on emotionless machines to protect them and to brutalise the serfs. These machines will never suffer a crisis of conscious and will therefor eliminate the last chink in the armour of our would be overlords.

In Silicon Valley, some of the wealthiest people on Earth believe that they have the power to create a superior species. Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, wrote in 2017 that AI would allow humans to become “the first species ever to design our own descendants.” What this means for humans, however, remains unclear. According to Altman, we will either jump-start digital intelligence “and then fade into an evolutionary tree branch, or we can figure out what a successful merge looks like.” In other words, humans have a choice: face extinction or merge with machines. “I believe the merge has already started,” Altman added, and is “probably our best-case scenario.”
What in the Mass Effect 3 is this absolute horseshit?
Just because you use GitHub doesn't make you smarter than everyone else, Sam.

It is possible they read some visionary SciFi like Greg Egan's "Diaspora", where you have everything from "native born" AIs, to "fleshers" that willingly modify their genetics for various reasons.
Sure, it's all very utopian, but it's also set in 2975, with no mention of what happened before that point or how humanity got there.
And yeah, "Permutation City" is set roughly around 2040, but that novel ends pretty much there without further discussion of the real world, so it's really just the other bookend to "Diaspora."
Is it a really cool idea that would lead to each individual ultimately having the option of mortality and embodiment? Yes, but it's also a point of contention in the novel that the "fleshers" chose not to enter the digital polises, and remain the physical world.
As usual, these privileged sociopaths read the bright-eyed futurism and took away the wrong lesson. But what do you expect from people so insulated from reality by their wealth that they are effectively intellectually handicapped?

The planet will only be for the wealthy Epstein class and any lower/working class will have to pay a huge fee just to live on the planet. (Can’t have free air or rain water anymore). Oligarchs will do whatever they want with impunity.
Anyone who objects will be killed/arrested by the military and police forces they control. Looking at how Musk and Bezos want to go to space so bad, (SpaceX, Blue Origin) I wouldn’t be surprised they build colonies just to deport people there. People will be completely dependent on them for the things we take for granted like air and water.

Humans are adapted to live on this planet. We have millions of years of evolution behind us. These robots can’t exist without our carefully constructed and very delicate infrastructure. Funny thing is, if shit blows up, they'd never get to the bunker on time, safe. The only thing keeping their head attached to their bodies is society not collapsing. As soon as laws are gone, game is over.

Henry David Thoreau pointed out to us about 170 years ago, that you don't need to live by the standards of other people, you can live the simpler life.

The singularity results in one of three outcomes (1) a successful merging of humans and computers (aka the borg), (2) computer extermination of humans (aka Skynet), or (3) computer preservation of humanity in controlled conditions (aka the matrix)

The billionaires know if a large proportion of humanity is killed off, Earth’s resources will last long enough for their needs.

This is ultimately a matter of agency and the value humans place on the (relatively) free exercise of choice. Nothing is more precious or critical to preserve as a fact of human existence. No one should be willing to cede her or his agency to anyone or anything else.

Their plan for humanity is for themselves to get even richer. Nothing else is even a consideration.

These dumbasses see how restless and angry people are for the damage they've wrought on our world, and instead of doing anything to help the masses, they're investing in... immortality. Ok

"For tens of thousands of years, humans had a monopoly on language. Only we could use sentences. No longer." Or maybe its "until recently we were not smart enough to recognize patterns of communication, .i.e. language, in other species.
I find the most impressive technology we've developed is how to hammer those last few nails into the coffin from the inside

They are vibe coders and venture capitalists. They don't know shit about sociology, philosophy or historical trends.
They aren’t academic scholars.
They are billionaires protecting their nuts.

I don’t typically agree with crazy Bernie, but he is 100% correct and we the people need to unite against this insanity. Nobody wants this future!

I call it a project. But yes eugenics is the solution because nanny state is never to be trusted. At least this is what I make of the understanding of the eugenicist project.

Can't wait for the next Carrington event. Shit will be off the hook, just like all the phones.

those who have studied the esoteric and occult know what’s happening; everyone else thinks this is just billionaires behaving badly

Should be in r/NoShitSherlock. We know. And we will take care of them after we take care of the Trump problem.

They have no say-so in what happens in their own homes, how the hell is anybody letting them talk about "humanity"??

You know. I was playing the OG roller coaster tycoon last night. I was crushing it so I got q bunch of guests in my park.
Suddenly, as I'm scrolling around my park, looking at all the people and rides, Im hit with an existential thought.
The way that we view the NPCs, customers in this game is EXACTLY how these billionaires look at us.
I dont care if theyre unhappy, I dont care if they are complaining. Yes, i will throw them a bone if I notice my park value begin to drop, but ultimately all i care is that the money number goes up.
To them, we are not individuals with independent thoughts and lives. We are a single cohesive unit.
Thats why it is easier for them to forget "there are more of us than there are of them" because to them, we are a single entity. A single statistic.
