Not sure why it’s not mentioned in this article but they actually did clear the backlog.

> Pierce said if a voter registered through the DPS web portal but does not appear on the voter roll, they can cast a provisional ballot and election officials will take additional steps to determine their eligibility so it can be counted.

> “Election officials have an established method with DPS to check the transaction. If that voter did register through DPS, the vote will be counted,” she said.

Out of curiosity, how would a voter know whether an election official had counted the provisional vote?

"Provisional votes would have changed the outcome of the election, years later we look back and see what could have been."

Nah, after the next "election" going to be more like:

"Glorious eternal leader Trump declares provisional ballots are stupid terrorist ideas. If you suspect anyone of doubting Trump won 1,776% of the vote, report them to your local GestICEo center for suspicion of thought terrorism."

They didn't defraud elections in the past and throw a violent coup on the capitol just to hand over power peacefully.

u/bushnov 1d ago

wasnt there a woman a couple years ago who was unsure if her registration had gone through (or was still valid or not, can't quite remember) who was ultimately arrested for illegally voting after submitting the provisional ballot she was told to submit?

112

u/drunkenvalley 1d ago

Not quite. She was on probation or recently released, I'm not sure which, and she either wasn't allowed to vote yet or hadn't been processed to be allowed to vote yet.

But she received conflicting answers and, in good faith, placed a provisional ballot after being expressly told that if she was ineligible to vote it would just be discarded. Then the state arrested and charged her because she "should" have known she was ineligible apparently, even though she took every precaution available to her.

Edit: Oh, found the case. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/sep/24/texas-court-crystal-mason-voting-case

61

u/mtranda 21h ago

Mason was on supervised release – which is like probation – for a federal tax felony [...] Texas, like many US states, prohibits people with a felony conviction from voting if they are on probation.

What a ridiculous country. Even my shithole native Eastern European country provides voting for inmates. Yes, in prison. They are still citizens and the election results affects everyone's lives, including their detention.

DPS? The Department of Public Safety? As in Texas State Troopers, Texas Rangers, and the Highway Patrol?

Non Texans reading this need to realize that these are the paramilitary looking guys with khaki uniforms and cowboy hats from the Chuck Norris movies and TV shows.

Here’s an image search just so non-Texans are on the same page: search terms “Texas” & “DPS”.

Texas voters have to register with these guys and trust them not to fuck with their numbers.

7

u/hankhillforprez 17h ago

Texan responding: no, we don’t have “have to” register to vote through DPS. It’s just an option to have them process your application. DPS issues driver’s licenses, state IDs, and vehicle registrations. Whenever you do one of those things, you’re given the option to register to vote alongside whatever other process you’re completing through DPS.

It’s actually one of the rare things Texas does to make it slightly easier to register. It’s basically DPS telling people: “hey, filling out your drivers’ license renewal is the same info for voter registration—so if you aren’t already registered, want to go ahead and do that now?”

It’s sort of like your doctor offering your annual flu vaccine during a normal checkup. “You’re already here, want to get that squared away too?” You don’t have to get your flu shot that way, but it’s a convenient option for some who may have forgotten.

If I recall correctly, my county’s public library system does something similar when you sign up for a library card.

The Texas Secretary of State is the department that actually handles all voter registrations—for all Texans. DPS just has the ability to offer applications and then (is supposed to) submit those applications to the TX SoS. You can also get application from your county, or from the TX SoS directly, or through several other avenues. But again, all applications are actually processed by, and all registrations are issued from, the TX SoS. Also, checking your registration status is relatively simple online.

The issue described in the article resulted from the applications submitted through DPS not being transmitted to the TX SoS. Now, whether that was the result of a “glitch” or malfeasance is a better question.

@ u/nobody1701 you should consider editing this point into your post. Mine is buried under a wall of text, and Texas deserves to be called out on this.

7

u/-rosa-azul- 17h ago

Texas DPS issues drivers' licenses. It's equivalent in that sense to other states' DMVs. It's an absolutely completely normal thing to register to vote when you go to get/renew your license, since you're having to fill out the same info anyway.

These people essentially registered to vote at the DMV, and they had a huge backlog that wasn't processed (it is now cleared).

eta saying people have to register with "those guys" is also inaccurate. You can do it this way, or you can go to a local registrar's office and do it there.

3

u/BetterCalldeGaulle 21h ago

Generally, provisional ballots are not counted unless the total number exceeds the difference in votes for winning candidate, after all other totals come in. Then a judge has to review them with people from both parties arguing for and against including them. But I don't know the specific rules in Texas.

15

u/kai58 18h ago

I mean that doesn’t really tell you much with software issues, if anything a software problem is more likely to affect all registrations than only a few.

What makes it suspicious is Republicans having a history of intentionally making it harder to vote not the amount of registrations affected.

7

u/Mr_ToDo 16h ago

And from what the article says it's a pretty screwy one too

Apparently it says things worked and issues a receipt with no actual verification that the data was recorded

It's worse then failing. If it just failed people would have known right away that something needed to be fixed, but instead seems to have put the onus on the end user to check if it worked(which, why would you think to do so when it gave you a receipt saying it's all good?)

63

u/PLeuralNasticity 1d ago

Same thing they did with USPS in the last election and it will be worse this time, though Im not sure if their plan includes keeping the House

USPS was how they rigged every swing state. Every single one is all mail or no excuse absentee. They did so much in conjunction with their weaponization of the USPS under Dejoy to facilitate this. If you want somewhere to start diving down the rabbit hole, I'd recommend reading through Dejoys page and these links.

Looking at the processing/counting policies in various states as well as when they were changed through the lens of how they would enable the creation of the fictional results we were presented, assuming a kompromised USPS, may make it start to jump out at you.

Every swing state but Nevada required mail ballots to be received by Election day, meaning Dejoys USPS can delay delivery of mailing the ballots out and back to ensure those they dont want counted are too late. Nevada was the only swing state that was all-mail and mailed every "active" registered voter a ballot after implementing it permanently post pandemic in 2022. They required postmark by election and receipt within 4 days so delay would be slightly harder but far outweighed by the new opportunities for fraud on a large scale with the USPS created by the change in election structure.

State signature cure processes reveal another part of the process both in whether they require notification through a method other than the USPS and how long they give voters to correct any issues. Other aspects can be seen in the timing of when states allow processing/counting of MiB to begin or even when they allow them to be sent out.

FSBelon played a large part in multiple ways. The signatures/data from registered voters for fraudulent ballots to add/replace ballots for them, likely including many who did not vote then or ever before that only registered to collect the money. This also provided great cover for the massive amount of fraudulent voter registrations for other non voters that didnt sign the petition or register, remaining unaware a vote for Trump was cast in their name. This worked in all worked in tandem with Starlink in areas it was being used for Voter Checkin to see who they could add ballots for.

"DeJoy was criticized for cost-reduction policies enacted after assuming office in June 2020, including eliminating overtime, and banning late or additional trips to deliver mail. The Postal Service also continued responding to long-term declines in first class mail volume with ongoing decommissioning of hundreds of high-speed mail-sorting machines and removal of the lower-volume mail collection boxes from streets. These practices were also criticized as mail delivery became delayed. The changes took place during the COVID-19 pandemic and in the lead-up to the 2020 presidential election, raising fears that the changes would interfere with voters who used mail-in voting to cast their ballots, possibly intentionally. Congressional committees and the USPS inspector general investigated. In August of that year, amid public pressure, DeJoy said that the changes would be suspended until after the election,[4] and in October the USPS agreed to reverse all of them.[5]"

"On August 7, 2020, DeJoy announced he had reassigned or displaced 23 senior USPS officials, including the two top executives overseeing day-to-day operations.[56][50] He said he was trying to breathe new life into a "broken business model".[57] Rep. Gerald E. Connolly, who chairs the House committee that oversees the USPS, said the reorganization was "deliberate sabotage".[50] In a letter to postal workers on August 13, 2020, DeJoy confirmed reports of delays in mail delivery, calling them "unintended consequences" of changes that eventually would improve service.[58] At the same time that he was taking measures that postal workers and union officials said were slowing down mail delivery, President Trump told a TV interviewer that he himself was blocking funds for the postal service in order to hinder mail-in voting.[59]"

"After congressional protests, the USPS inspector general began a review of DeJoy's policy changes.[43] On August 18, 2020, DeJoy announced that the Postal Service would suspend cost-cutting and other operational changes until after the 2020 election.[60] He said that equipment that had already been removed would not be restored.[61][62] Documents obtained by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington indicated that DeJoy lied under oath when he testified to Congress on August 24 that he did not order the restrictions on overtime.[63] At this congressional testimony DeJoy admitted that he was unaware of the cost of mailing a postcard or a smaller greeting card, the starting rate for US Priority Mail, or how many Americans voted by mail in the 2016 elections.[64]"

28

u/Li_liminal_spaces 22h ago edited 22h ago

These are new voters, once you are registered to vote unless you're purged from the voter rolls, which I dunno the article is paywalled.

They're sending suspicious lists of voter to states to verify which means they know who is voting. All of their accused "illegal" voters have been real voters so far.

They know who legal voters are, could easily just register them to vote, that would hurt the "Republican" party. They are the "Republican" party because no party that calls themselves a Republican party wants a god, king, emperor.

11

u/mollophi 18h ago

unless you're purged from the voter rolls

These are not just new voters. If you moved and had to change county, that change is stuck in this pile as well. I moved from collin to denton county and I just get told I have no registration despite being registered before submitting my change.

13

u/Master_Mad 19h ago

It's still a very weird concept for me as non-US person that you have to register for a party before actually voting. In my country they just send you a call up voting card which you take to the voting station and use to vote anonymously.

And everyone over 18 gets send the voting card to their registered home address.

9

u/mainman879 18h ago

It's still a very weird concept for me as non-US person that you have to register for a party before actually voting.

You don't have to. Anyone is allowed to register as independent and still vote in the actual elections. However some states do restrict voting in Primaries (elections to choose the parties candidate) to just registered voters of that party.

12

u/jurgy94 18h ago

But why do you have to register in the first place?

9

u/mainman879 18h ago

Part of it is a lack of good records tracking people in the USA. So to keep elections fair, you are required to register with your local county, and this ensures that you are not voting in places you shouldn't be (which is a federal crime).

Part of it is just "how its always been" and the country as a whole is pretty resistant to change, especially when it comes to our political system.

Part of it is intentional, and meant as a form of voter suppression.

Speaking as a recent Californian that moved to Texas, the voter registration process is much crazier and harder to navigate here. My most recent voter registration took half a year before it showed as valid in the online systems. I honestly thought I was going to miss the midterms because it just would not update.

42

u/Professor0fLogic 1d ago

Unfortunately, that's by design.

19

u/footpole 21h ago

Meanwhile in my country you just go vote. There's no registration. This all seems so difficult on purpose.

9

u/Determined420 21h ago

It is. In California every voter gets mailed a ballot. I dropped mine off at the election office a couple days ago. I filled it out at home while sipping my coffee

5

u/stockybloke 19h ago

In Norway I dont do anything, elections are 9th of September or thereabout every other year and we get a voting ballot in the mail end of summer around 3 weeks before the elections when the pre-voting open. You can show up anywhere in the country and register your vote in this period. I think on election day you need to vote in your designated area, but the voting ballot is optional. You can ignore it and just show up with a valid identification card, it just helps them locate you in their list when you do vote.

I don’tg get why you even need to register to vote in the US. In every other countries in the world you’re eligible to vote automatically if you’re an adult citizen. You just show up and vote on the day of election, in the disctrict you live. It looks like the system was created to intentionally keep citizens away from voting.

22

u/throwawayfinancebro1 22h ago

The reason is that states administer elections and many republicans states work very hard to rig elections

5

u/Prestigious_Use_1305 20h ago

Its actually insane that for the presidental, senate and congress elections there isnt one unified set if rules and one single independent authority that deals with it. One single national register that eveyone can update their address on to vote in their own district.

5

u/mollophi 18h ago

Ironically, this is what the administration is trying to do, expressly for the purpose of rigging votes under the guise of election security. They want a single register so they know exactly whose votes to throw out.

9

u/bbbbbbbbbblah 20h ago edited 20h ago

Not all countries. The UK doesn't have automatic registration because we don't have a database of who lives where (in fact the electoral roll stands in for that purpose), and you can't use other databases as a reference since you are allowed to be registered at multiple addresses.

However, registration is very easy so it's not considered a big deal. Took me 5 minutes when I moved and 2 minutes each year to confirm that I still live here

IMO the actual key difference in the US is that elected officials handle the day to day elections administration. Over here it's run by civil servants whose personal politics aren't reflected in their work

I'm always so confused by these. I don't really recall registering to vote. I think it was something I did at 18. Every year no matter when I live a ballot just shows up at my mailbox I fill it out. I put it in the mailbox the next day and voting is done. why is this so complicated everywhere else in the country?

31

u/Formal-Plantain-5352 19h ago

I live in rural Iowa and have for well over a decade. Every single election I have to re-register the day of elections because Im not registered to vote. Every time I go to the courthouse (a couple times a year) I register to vote. When I show up to vote I am not registered. Ever.

Thankfully, my job allows us to take the day off to vote on major elections, but it still takes what could be a 2 minute evolution and turns it into hour(s) long drag just to fill in a bubble in a place that Ive lived most of my adult life.

Voter suppression. Republicans don't like it when voters, especially Dem-leaning voters, have easy access to voting places or can easily vote by mail. Then they try to illegitimize mail-in voting by falsely claiming fraud.

I also got my mail in ballot last week here in CA. I dropped it off at a drop box on Monday, and I checked yesterday morning that it has been accepted already. Ezpz but that's because our state actually wants voters to vote.

22

u/pm-me-kittens-n-cats 18h ago

To make it more difficult to vote. It's intentional. If you have to jump through hoops in order to vote, maybe you are too busy or you have other challenges that means that you just opt not to.

9

u/Ashamed-Status-9668 17h ago

Yup. If you are older you likely are already registered so these hoops hit younger people which vote at higher rates for Democrats. All by design.

“Whoopsie! We should just let the courts decide if we did anything wrong, in 3 years.”

17

u/SetoKeating 1d ago

I’m pretty sure I’m part of this glitch. I wasn’t an newly registered voter but I went on DPS site to update address on my license due to a move and hit the button like I always do regarding also updating my voter registration.

Never went through and my voter registration status was in suspense as of a couple of weeks ago. I went to check it to make sure all was good before early voting.

5

u/LibertyPrime2016 1d ago

Same thing happened to me and my parents after recent moves. We had to file new voter registration forms three different times because they kept not updating. Bullshit all around.

18

u/aaa_user_55 1d ago

a 'glitch' impacting nearly 600,000 registrations right before an election is a massive systemic failure, not just a technical hicqup. Transparency and immediate extensions are the absolute bare minimum response needed here

33

u/ArnoldTheSchwartz 14h ago

Republicans do not want Americans voting anymore. They have full control, have done some awful shit that should land a lot of them in prison, and made a lot of money. Americans regaining control of their government now spells the end for so many Republicans. They can't have that so they're doubling down.

15

u/DidIJustWitnessThat 1d ago

The cure to this is to vote so overwhelming in one direction that the provisional ballots aren't needed.

If it's a blue blowout, then those 600,000 provisional ballots wouldn't be needed or counted.

Just go vote. It's the only thing that will change this.

15

u/binzersguy 19h ago

Republicans CANNOT win on policy. This is why the only proven voter fraud is perpetrated by them again and again and again. They will do anything they can to rob you of your right to vote.

14

u/SortovaGoldfish 23h ago

Let this be an indicator because Texas is considered a very clear and obvious Red State, even with the typical, historically blue cities and that's who they are interfering with.

Please anyone who can, go vote. Go put in your vote. Go make real what they're afraid of.

13

u/EbonySaints 1d ago

Yeah, I noticed when my updated voter registration hasn't appeared despite me going early to insure nothing happened.

Fuck Abbott and fuck Paxton.

12

u/Efficient-Prompt1888 22h ago

it's so frustrating that we can't have a fair election. It keeps going on and it seems like there isn't anything we can do about it. Why isn't something being done?

6

u/owen__wilsons__nose 19h ago

Because money finally corrupted the system built on capitalism. And the capitalists consolidated power via technology, created monopolies and conflicts of interest. Then they decided blatant corruption was good for the bottom line. And it was so

11

Dang it!  They all fell into the desktop recycle bin.  Oh well, nothing we can do about it.  Maybe we can try again after elections.

33

u/iamasuitama 17h ago

Can someone explain why in the bastion of democracy that is the US, you can't just be registered in the first place? Why do you need to ask for it? Why do you need to tell them what party you "belong to" before you vote? Why does that affiliation need to be public information?

Just asking questions

14

u/Conscious-Quarter423 15h ago

cause republicans don't want you to vote

they rather cheat to win than put up an agenda that works for all americans

5

u/Professional-Part857 15h ago

Just on the party question, you are only able to vote in the primary election for the candidate of your party. So if there are three Democrats running for governor, I’m going to pick my favorite as a registered Democrat. The most popular will run as the Democrat candidate in the general election. I can’t influence the candidate for the republican nominee. I’m a registered independent in my state, so I can pick which party I will vote for in the primary.

8

u/kyxtant 15h ago

That varies from state to state, as well. You're describing a closed primary where voters can only vote for members of their party.

There are other types of primaries.

How the fuck does a "glitch" stop an entire year worth of voter registrations????

No more "decorum" Democrats. Throw these criminals in prison

24

u/TAU_equals_2PI 1d ago edited 1d ago

I wish people would stop telling Democrats to do something, when they haven't been given the authority to do anything. Do y'all just expect them to saunter into a nearby phone booth and emerge wearing a cape as DemocroMan?

The federal government: Republican President, Republican Attorney General, Republican Senate, Republican House of Representatives, Republican Supreme Court.

Texas: Republican Governor, Republican Attorney General, Republican legislature. Not a single Democrat in ANY statewide elected office.

14

u/Wanted_Solicitation 1d ago

It’s honestly embarrassing how weak and cowardly America has become.

Just letting them take your country, betray your allies and run amok without doing a thing.

6

u/Adventurous_Salt 23h ago

Republicans can somehow control everything with a minority, but dems can't do a thing. The dems could filibuster absolutely everything, have they? No, because they are gutless cowards. Hell, they are still voting on bipartisan bills and approving judges. Why haven't dems used whatever power they do have?

u/hamandjam 23h ago

Because it's not a glitch. It's ALWAYS been this way. Ever since they've been tasked with doing registrations, this has happened. The underlying issue is that there is absolutely no electronic registration in Texas. So people check the voter registration box on their DPS application and expect it to register them electronically. It doesn't. It generated a paper form that is them forwarded to the appropriate registrar. The so called 'glitch' is that DPS offices just let them sit in the various offices and not get sent off.

I have worked elections in Texas now for 20 years. And have dealt with this 'glitch' throughout the entire time. And have had to tell probably hundreds of people who thought they were regis6throught their DPS application that there were not eligible to vote because their registration has not been processed. And I always tell anyone I can to not trust the DPS process and to process their registration separately from their ID application.

10

u/Kamay1770 12h ago

The Republicans want you to not vote. Ever. They know they suck and they think you're dumb.

16

u/cr0ft 22h ago

Let me guess, the delay was 99% in areas where there are Democratic party voters, for some inexplicable reason?

This is why America's voting system is generally cursed. This kind of horseshit should not be possible, and the way you make sure it's not is by having paper voting, well designed, well executed, with all the interested parties jointly watching all the ballot boxes like hawks to ensure no tampering is easily possible.

Does it take days longer to count the vote with a lot of manual labor? Yes. You'd think it was worth it, what with it only deciding everything that the nation will do for years to come.

If you have sequences where you have to trust either people or machines, you 100% no longer have a functional democracy.

The USA is actively helping right wing regimes across the world with voter suppression tech and best practices.

Most politicians called for ACYPL boot camps (American Council for Young Political Leaders) end up with voter manipulation or suppression charges in their countries.

8

u/Practical-Library658 20h ago

“Glitch” sure seems like a catch all these days for tampering with voting.

7

u/Palmolive 1d ago

lol yeah I’m sure it’s a glitch. Expect this to be a huge problem.

5

u/Fair-Hair2080 1d ago

Yeah, sure a “glitch”. It’s called vote suppression by Republicans.

7

u/mfrunyan 16h ago

Isn't a glitch only a glitch if it's not intentional?

5

u/happyColoradoDave 9h ago

1/2 a million people?! WTF Texas?

6

9

u/MisterSlosh 13h ago

Ah, yes... A "GLITCH causing more than half a million citizens to potentially lose the rights of their voice in the ONE way it matters to the government.

Fuck. Go vote.

29

u/StallionSurprise 19h ago

This is why Texas is lost.

Aint no democrat ever winning there again.

Downvote all you want. Your state is an embarrassment to the United States.

12

u/VGAddict 16h ago

So we should just give up? MILLIONS of blue voters, POC and LGBTQ+ people live in Texas, and fight every day for the rights you blue staters take for granted.

8

u/-FakeAccount- 15h ago

Ignore the haters, just make sure you vote.

5

u/Tommy__want__wingy 15h ago

They didn’t say to give up.

Prove the country wrong, overcome the suppression.

If you have millions within that demographic, then do something about it.

Register EARLY. Don’t wait til this shit happens.

And actually vote. Not you. I’m talking about the people that don’t vote.

Texas can theoretically flip. But it hasn’t.

And suppression isn’t the ONLY reason. It’s a big one, don’t get me wrong, but Texas turn out numbers NEED to increase even more this election.

That can only be done if people actually put the work in.

If Talarico wins, that’s at the very least a good sign.

If Republicans take the races, then it still says more about turnout than suppression.

3

u/Conscious-Quarter423 15h ago

Rigging elections is the only way the GOP can still win.

3

u/Ziferius 1d ago

Last I read about this, provisional ballots are only counted if an election needs it. IE; a race is so close that they gotta get at them.

Then a judge has to deem they are legitimate votes.

My understanding; most times they are not opened.

5

u/font9a 1d ago

Egregious election fraud by our "elected" state criminals.

4

8

u/After_Resource5224 10h ago

I'm one of those voters. Texas is so god damn Gerrymandered and even THAT isn't gonna do the trick, so they purged 1.5 million voters. I sent in a registration for good measure a MONTH ago.

Everybody needs to turn out, please, because some of us may not be able to. This is active election tampering, and it's fucking everywhere.

3

u/WobblyFrisbee 21h ago

Hawaii does a great job. I have voted by mail for years. First, I get a card in the mail very early, to confirm my registration information. Next, I get an email to confirm a ballot was mailed to me. Next, after they receive my ballot, they send another email to confirm that the ballot was received. I like that.

3

u/x33storm 21h ago

Insane you gotta register to vote in that country. Just seems like one of many extra steps to "democracy".

No surprise, lots of early voting starts on Monday. My red state is well aware that most new voters are registering as Democrats. Buckle up; there is more to come.
