Artist/Apprentice/Shop Verification UPDATED

Hi everyone!

We have received a few comments on our previous verification instructions post that for some folks, the "See More" button has disappeared on mobile and desktop.

We have added a link to message modmail to the toolbar found on the right of desktop. As of June 2025, we do not currently have a workaround for mobile if "see more" is missing for you, so feel free to reply to this post letting us know you are having difficulty accessing modmail and we will help as best we can.

Discussion Verifying Tattooers/Modmail

Thumbnail

Hey all!

If you are a tattooer that wants to be verified or are just someone with questions for the mod team please use modmail. Please do not message any of the mods via individual DM. Please see the screenshots for how to message modmail (via mobile) if you don’t know how to already.

Since Monday I have received about a dozen personal DMs for artist verification. However, one of these message came in at 12:30am and by 6am the same day I had a nasty follow up message for not replying. I’ll give the benefit of the doubt and say this person probably lives in a different part of the world, and didn’t realize they messaged these two messages at what would generally be considered times that most people (myself included) are asleep. And this is exactly why we ask people to message modmail instead of any of us directly.

The mod team here is small for a sub of this size but we do try to handle anything that comes into modmail as quickly as possible. Often times if we get individual DMs about mod related issues for the sub, we are at work when it comes in and forget about it by the time we get home. Sometimes we are simply with our families, or even touching grass and spending some time off Reddit ( gasp ). Sometimes we are just asleep. When you message via modmail, the message goes to a group inbox and we can all see it so if one of us forgets or is busy the rest of us can take over handling artist verification or any other issues you may have. That being said- we are still just people with jobs and lives outside of Reddit, so please don’t get annoyed with us if you don’t get a reply within a few hours. Most of the time we reply within a day, but shit happens and this sub is not all that important in the grand scheme of life, the universe, and everything.

TL/DR: Use modmail to reach the mod team please & thank you

PS: We took your feedback on the whole banning X links and have banned X links from the sub (overwhelming majority was to ban)

PPS: We have added a new mod to the team, u/coffeehedake , and one (possibly two) of our old mods should be returning soon

Ganesha Tattoo by Adam Sky, Private Studio in San Francisco, California

Healed Ganesha thigh tattoo by Adam Sky, San Francisco. About 20 hours of work. The tattoo is fully healed in this photo.
Ganesha is the Hindu deity associated with wisdom, new beginnings, and removing obstacles. In one traditional account, Parvati created him to guard her door while she bathed. A confrontation with Shiva led to his beheading, and Shiva restored him to life with an elephant’s head.
There are several legends about his broken tusk. In one popular telling, his pen broke while he was transcribing the Mahabharata, so he snapped off his own tusk and kept writing. A pretty serious commitment to finishing a project.

How many edits is too many edits until you decide to look for another artist?

Hi guys, I've been getting a tattoo designed for a few months now and found the artist a bit hard to communicate with; for eg: I asked for blue highlights and he gave me red; I asked for three small adjustments, and he only did one, asked for the remaining two, and he only did one, etc, had a facetime with him and struggled for 45mins because we just cant seem to communicate, i'd ask him for a change and he would just do something else entirely. Thought we had come to a final design and ended the call, once he sent through the rendered edit I didn't like it, there is just one angle on a prominent strand of hair that looks unrendered and bad to me. Can I just go to the tattoo appointment (in a few weeks) and try to communicate this adjustment in person or would that annoy him more? We are currently on edit 7 or 8+ I've given him so many references (its a character) and he just doesn't seem to get that i want it to look like the character's hair? Idk, any advice would be helpful. Cheers.

EDIT: I really do like the tattoo and want to get it, but I don't want to be looking at this one part of it that looks silly to me, i'm worried that if I ask for another edit over text he won't understand and get annoyed and tell me to go somewhere else, so just wanted to add that, thanks for the advice

Illustrative Floral Black/Grey Half-Sleeve by AJ Jensen at Dancing Fox Tattoo in Baltimore

Post image

When I got my first teeny tiny little bitty tattoo eleven years ago, the artist said he’d see me in a few years for a sleeve. I said that won’t be me, I don’t want big tattoos

Well that artist retired about five years ago, but he was right, just off by a few years and half an arm because he didn’t account for how stubborn I get when someone tells me what to do. Here’s the half sleeve I got from AJ Jensen yesterday.

And because everyone has asked IRL, I’m going to preemptively answer it here: No, I don’t plan to have it colored in at this point. I really like the black and grey. If that changes, I will let my son pick the colors. He’s 3 and was excited to see me come home with a “coloring book arm” yesterday, which is a dream come true for me because how fun is that? Once it heals, I’ll hand him some washable markers and let him have at it!

Really like how the geometric patterns blend into the botanical elements here. The tiny ladybugs and birds are such nice little details that you might not notice at first glance.

Pink, purple, blue, and orange flowers trail across the shoulder and upper arm. Small berries and bees are tucked between the leaves, with thin stems linking the details. The style is colourful botanical illustration with fine linework.

Discussion What has made you regret/not regret a tattoo?

I really want to get my first tattoo and I have a design that's super personal and has a lot of emotional significance to me for over half my life.

However, I have a lot of worries and Christian guilt (I'm still a devout Christian so no bashing my faith please) about getting something permanent on my body.

For the people who regret their tattoos or worried about regretting them, what makes you feel the ways you do?

Japanese ink-wash inspired bamboo tattoo. Love how it bends with the arm, as well as how the bold brushstrokes contrast with the softer, fading details..
