One thing I’ve always found interesting about tarot is how differently a card can be interpreted once you look beyond its most popular meaning.
Take the Death card, for example. A lot of people see it and immediately think of endings or something negative, but that’s only a small part of its symbolism.
In traditional tarot, Death is associated with transformation, transition, and the closing of one chapter to make room for another. Sometimes, it can reflect the need to let go of an old mindset, a pattern we keep repeating, or something that no longer fits who we’re becoming.
What makes tarot interesting to me is that the surrounding cards, the question being asked, and the overall context can all influence how a card is understood. The Death card next to the Star, for instance, might suggest a different symbolic story than Death next to the Devil.
Of course, I don’t think every ending has to mean a beautiful new beginning straight away. Sometimes change is just uncomfortable, and that’s part of the process too.
I’m curious to hear from other tarot readers: which card do you think gets misunderstood the most, and has your interpretation of it changed over time?
