Discussion How did I get dragged back into swg AGAIN??
Let’s talk about gaming in general. If you’re a person who enjoys games, I’d venture to say you don’t only enjoy one.
When the newest season of whatever Blizzard is pumping out for WoW comes out, I don’t see it as fragmenting this community, even though the Venn diagram of enjoyers overlaps. When Valheim 1.0 came out, I didn’t get up in arms in their reviews saying they were fragmenting the gaming community because I was going to go play through it with some buddies who also play SWG.
New ideas, continued development, and the die-hard ambition to create the exact version of SWG that you enjoy while also putting in the effort so others can take part is exactly what has kept this game alive.
If a vanilla 1.0 server came out tomorrow it wouldn't maintain decent population for any period of time simply because this community has taken the game so incredibly far development wise. That’s a testament not only to how good the skeleton is but to the dedication of its playerbase. I don’t go back and play vanilla Skyrim. I spend 5 hours finding mods, realize I fucked up my install, then go play something else.
If we’d simply left it at 1.0 and all played on the same server, hard stuck in time, we’d have put in our hours, explored the content we wanted, and quit when it went stale, just like every other game in existence.
Every time a new server opens, the narrative that it’s somehow “stealing” members from an already small community has become the default take. The reality is new servers are a big part of what’s responsible for keeping this community alive.
I’m only speaking for myself. I love the game, but I don’t play on any of the main 3-4 servers. When a new server I’m interested in opens, it brings me right back. I’m a net add when there are new servers and new ideas to check out. There’s no fracturing when it comes to me, and I doubt I’m the only one.
I tend to play SWG for a few months every couple of years. When I saw the ideas feeding the new Uprising server, and that it was brand new (I really don’t enjoy the ghost town feeling of 10-year-old servers-- I like the new, scrappy feeling of starting fresh), it sucked me right back in. Same thing for Attack of the Clones a little while back, and Sentinels Republic (the first one, I think?). Strong recommend Uprising to anyone who loves the game but especially those masochistic enough to love PvP in this 20-year-old game.
I have a ton of appreciation for everyone who’s put in the work to develop a server or just helped out by playing on a small one and building a community. It takes a crazy amount of time, energy and patience to stand up a server like this and build a community people actually want to be a part of. And every single time someone does it the same comments show up. It splits the playerbase, why not just play on X, it’ll be dead in 3 months. Same takes, different thread. Not every new server is going to be good and that’s fine. People figure that out by trying them, not by dunking on them before they even launch. I get that population matters, especially for PvP, but piling on someone who cared enough about this game to put their own spin on it isn’t protecting the community. It just makes sure nobody new wants to try. Every staple server you play on today started out as somebody’s “unnecessary” new server.
So maybe next time a new server pops up that actually interests you, go give it a shot and add to the community instead of tearing down the people putting their free time into building it. Worst case, you lose a weekend. Best case, you find your next home.
---------------
TLDR- New servers bring people like me back and breathe new life/ideas into this game. I’m a net add and I doubt I’m the only one. Don’t let your only contribution to this community be naysaying people passionate enough to spend their free time building sandboxes for the rest of us.
