Help UT Tyler Surveying and Mapping Multi-state licensure

• Upvotes

I have asked a similar question but, those of you who have received a B.S Industrial Tech, what states, other than Texas, have you been able to have the degree accepted as meeting the 4 year educational requirements? I know Oklahoma accepts. Looking at California and others.

I have emailed California and will update for the group on their answer.

Discussion Throwing Junior Crew Chiefs to the Wolves

Do you think it’s good management to throw Junior Crew Chiefs into jobs when they are considered to be in the training process (less than one month into a promotion)? Would it be okay for the junior to talk about it to management?

Discussion New to Drafting

Hey yall! I've got twenty four years of field experience and only about two months of being in the office. My mentor learned to draft using c & g DOS programs. Im become more efficient using Carlson but I feel like I went from being a wizard in the field to an intern in the office.

My mentor likes to use C&G to do Map Area Summaries, then run a Map Check to verify closure on a parcel. When I try and use Carlson to do the same functions, Map check by points, then create a .PDD file from those bearings and distances, I sometimes get different results, not much but just not perfect to the C&G solution. Thanks for reading, I'm guess I'm just venting about nothing...

Discussion Job Advice

Hi all. I am asking for some advice from those that have more life/work experience than me.

Quick background: I got my PLS license at the beginning of this year and just turned 30. I work at a medium sized engineering/surveying firm as a project surveyor. I have 5 years office experience under a PLS and 5 years in the field. I have mostly been doing subdivisions, R.O.S.'s, parcel splits, ALTA'S, etc.

I am being a offered a job to start a one man survey department (for now) for a small 7 man transportation/civil engineering firm focused on public roadway design and improvement projects. They said they "stay inside the public right-of-way" most of the time. They want me to pretty much just do boundary/topo/easements from what I understand. The owner said he has zero interest in construction staking and subdivision jobs. They are sick of hiring out for survey and want survey in house.

They stated that they would like to see the survey side eventually become its own entity where we would take on work outside of theirs with an increase in staff as needed but they would like to stay a small company. They value the environment they have made that isn't go-go-go. They work four 10 hour days and take fridays off. The drive would suck though as it would go from 30 minutes total a day to roughly 1.5 hours a day. However, I would not work fridays.

We have only met once. The owners want me to come up with a salary I think is fair and they will see if it is realistic. I asked about profit sharing or bonuses and they said that is something they would be willing to consider (realistically they will try to push bonuses). I personally feel that 5% profit sharing for anything the survey department did wouldn't be a crazy ask but understand they would need to buy equipment/truck/supplies/etc.

Do you guys think this is wise for me to consider this job and what would you ask for as a salary/etc. that is realistic? (located in the northwest U.S.). Would the work suck or be pretty simple? I haven't done any work in state/county roadway projects. What questions should I ask them?

My current job is amazing and very comfortable with a pretty good work/life balance. They have been great to me and I make $110k a year after bonuses with consistent yearly raises. I am not looking to leave but I am not afraid of taking a chance on something new as well. Money isn't everything to me but I want to provide for my family the best I can. I have a young family with another kid on the way soon so that is something to consider as well and I value my family/work life balance.

Help Looking for Android testers for an offline COGO / traverse calculator (free, needs 12 people for 14 days)

Hi all. I'm the developer of COGO Survey Calculator, a COGO app that's been on iPhone and iPad since June. A lot of it came from surveyors' feedback, including a Reddit thread about offset reference marks that turned into the common tangent and two-unknowns tools.

The Android version is built, but Google makes new developer accounts run a closed test with at least 12 people for 14 days before an app can go public. So I'm looking for surveyors, techs, party chiefs and students with an Android phone (Android 8 or newer) who'd try it and tell me what's wrong with it.

What it does

- Bearing/distance traverse with running coordinates. Curve legs (chord bearing, radius, arc length, left/right). Legs can be typed in feet, metres, US survey feet or links.

- Closure: misclosure distance and bearing (azimuth or quadrant), precision 1:N, Compass or Transit adjustment, area in acres or hectares, metes-and-bounds description.

- Inverse, radiations, intersections, 3-point resection, line tools, station & offset, sideshot reduction.

- Horizontal and vertical curves with stakeout tables, alignments with spirals.

- State Plane (SPCS83 plus an SPCS2022 preview), UTM, grid/ground.

- CSV import/export in your column order, DXF (R12) and a one-page PDF report.

It works fully offline. No account, no ads, no tracking, and the app has no internet permission at all.

How to join

  1. Fill in this Google Form in the comments

Please stay in the test for the full 14 days. Google only counts you while you're opted in, so don't tap "Leave the program". Opening it now and then helps too.

Everyone in the test gets COGO Pro free while the test runs

What I'd most like to hear

- Wrong answers. If a number disagrees with your data collector, Carlson, Civil 3D or your hand calcs, send me the inputs and I'll fix it.

- Anything slow or awkward to enter in the field.

- Crashes, and which phone you were on.

Comment here or DM me. Thanks for reading.

Discussion FIRST TIME RUNNING TRIMBLE INTEGRATED SYSTEM

Post image
33 Upvotes

Earlier this week I kept thinking about how the INTEGRATED SYSTEM on TRIMBLE works. I’m currently running Trimble S6,TSC7’& R8-4. Today I was in the field laying out LOD,BLDG,EP,& SEPTIC. Once I finished I switched my setup to the integrated survey style I created prior to today. It worked waaaaaay better than I thought it was going to. I did my regular setup that I did earlier in the day. It came out just as it did earlier that day H-0.008 n V-0.012. Then I went to do my check and it was in the thousands aswell. Then I clicked on the top right of the screen on my TSC7 and it seamlessly switched to my R8-4 and the same point i checked in at I staked it out n it was good too! This was my first time trying the integrated system and it went off without any issues. Idk when I’ll ever use it in the field but just knowing it’s an option is a game changer to me.

Picture William Burt's 1844 survey crew found iron at Negaunee, MI

Post image

On 19 September 1844 William Austin Burt's survey crew was working south of Teal Lake, Michigan, when the needle of their magnetic compass fluctuated wildly. The men went looking for the cause and found iron ore outcrops, the first find on the Marquette Iron Range.

Burt's solar compass, patented in 1836, takes true north from the sun so ore in the ground can't throw it off.

The Jackson Mine opened on the find and produced over 4 million tons before closing in 1924. This is my own bare-earth lidar render, and the old pits are the chain of hollows across the middle.

Numbered pins on the picture:
Pin 1: Floor of a deep pit hollow
Pin 2: Crest of a long high ridge

Lidar: USGS 3D Elevation Program (3DEP), public domain.

Offbeat Land Surveying in Minecraft

What started off as a fun weekend project months back, has become a bit of a hobby building a Minecraft mod. I was wanting to make topographic maps in-game, which lead to start learning Java with the assistance of some AI tools.

- Start by placing a Transit, and right-clicking to set the occupy coordinates.
- Hold either a Rod or a Spyglass to display a HUD showing Azimuth, Horizontal Distance, Delta North, Delta East, and Cut/Fill, relative to the occupy point.
- Press V to save the shot to a CSV file in PNEZD format.
- Units supported: Meters(blocks), Feet, Chain, Miles.
- Grid or Ground scaling supports real-world projection mods at latitude (Web Mercator, Equi-rectangular (beta), Equal Earth (beta)).

It is a work in progress and a bit rough around the edges, but the core function is working.

Help GIS Consultancy in Surveying

I run a GIS Consultancy. I am thinking about reaching out to survey firms and being a potential partner with them. I know survey firms utilize a lot of GIS but is it typical for them to work with GIS firms for the mapping aspect of their work? Especially, if they don't have an in-house team. I don't mind doing the small one off projects for them: cad to GIS (i have data pipelines for that built out), web mapping, or a simple parcel map. I really enjoy working with survey related work so I'm debating if it's something I should really pursue to connect with more firms. If so, what services (besides the ones i already offer) should i offer because i may be missing a pain point? Also, i am open to advice to connecting with more firms! Thanks!

Help What service should I be requesting

Good afternoon! I apologize, I'm sure this seems like a very dumb question but I am a very dumb man. My father has offered to sell me an acre of land off of about 5ish acres we have roadside. The land is not surveyed in any way. I would like to know which acre would be the most ideal for a perc test/putting a house in general, as well as the actual process of splitting the acre off from the rest of the property. What are the names for the services I should request when asking around for quotes?

Help WA State specifics

I’ve been surveying for about 10 years, starting right out of geomatics college. I recently passed my FS and PS, but between reading posts on Reddit over the years and listening to old-head surveyors, I’ve gotten the impression that Washington’s state-specific exam is much harder than those in other states.
For those licensed in Washington and elsewhere, has that been your experience? I’m taking the test in January and getting kind of nervous, so any advice on preparing would be appreciated.

Help I Want a CAD Survey Drafting Job During College - What Are My Options?

I am a student attending college with the intent of getting a civil engineering degree. I just started so the only applicable skills I'm learning are AutoCAD and Inventor. I tried learning some Civil3D with the hopes of getting a job that I can use during college to gain real world skills but I don't know if putting my eggs in this basket of learning C3D on the side will work out the way I think it will.

What do you all think? Is it worth teaching myself and trying to get a job in this field? Are remote or hybrid or freelance CAD drafting jobs a thing? And what are some other engineering-adjacent positions I can look for using CAD or Inventor?

Finally, if I do want to continue learning Civil3D, what would you recommend to get the best learning experience?

Thank you for your feedback!

Discussion WWJS

I have been told by Christian neighbors that I am a bad person and that they Christians because they had encroached on my property. They let me know how evil I am. Where is it stated in the bible, thou shall not have a survey done when you have a legal right to do so. Or they are just a Christian when it is convenient for them to be one. I have been a follower of Christ my whole life, Baptist, the whole works, but I don't go around saying to people how ungodly they are and how Holy I am. These Christians were over by 100 ft on my property. I did not know where the property line was hence the reason for the survey, neither did they so I don't fault them for that. An error is just that, an error. But how you behave over the error is another story. Not saying I am anything, but if you going to state that about yourself before you tear up another person think about how Jesus would take that behavior.

Help Question on Surveyor-Grade Rotary Laser vs Contractor-Grade

As far as I was told by chaps working as surveyor from works, the surveyor grade laser gives a higher accuracy around 2.5mm per 100m compared to the other which is around 5mm per 100m.

Thing is I tried to look for ones with so-called accuracy but most only came with 5mm per 100m or around 1/16 inch per 100ft.

Mind sharing if anybody knows any lasers of such accuracy, just to satisfy my curiosity.

Discussion All in one information platform?

Outside of everyone's field, something I've noticed in this industry is that we tend to know quite a lot about our own areas of specialisation, but relatively little about what's happening in other areas. For example, someone working in construction surveying might know very little about recent developments in GIS, hydrography, remote sensing, cadastral surveying or even emerging geospatial technologies.

Not necessarily because of a lack of interest, but because industry information is scattered across different websites, associations, newsletters and manufacturers.

Curious whether others feel the same way. Do you actively keep up with the wider surveying/geospatial industry, or mostly just your own field?

And, would an all in one platform bringing together industry news, equipment and software developments, resources and discussions across these disciplines actually be useful to you guys? Or is there simply not much interest for that kind of cross industry information?

Help Montgomery county, MD Plats

Need opinion on what to title a plat. My company has all of the sudden gotten multiple jobs in Montgomery county. This is new to us. One of our jobs is a parcel that’s getting developed but isn’t being subdivided, we’re only adding some forest con and a few other easements. I can’t find anything from the county on if they want this called something specific. Was thinking on titling it simply as an Easement Plat.
