CBB Reference College Basketball Reference has made a significant update to its historical data

Thanks to the efforts of the indefatigable researcher Dave Quinn, College Basketball Reference has made a significant update to its historical college basketball data.

The update includes the following:

  • Statistics for 1,081 season-level opponent's statistics
  • Additions to 182 player season statistics
  • 39 first names added or updated
  • 29 heights added
  • 27 player season stat lines added
  • 21 team or opponent season totals updated
  • 1 erroneous player season removed
  • 1 last name fixed

The bulk of this update was in team opponent statistics. This data has been complete on our since back to 2009-10 for some time. Additionally, it is substantially complete in officially tracked categories going back decades further with a notable exception. From 2001-02 through 2008-09 the official NCAA reports were often missing opponent stats due to a format change. This update does a lot to remedy this as we now have ~half complete opponent statistics for the period from 2002-03 through 2008-09 (with a lot more still missing in 2001-02).

New Baseball History Youtube Series

Hi,

I created a Youtube channel about baseball history and wanted to share. The first two episodes are out now, new episodes drop every Thursday at 12pm ET. The first season is a 10-episode run, with more to come next spring.

https://www.youtube.com/@QuickHitHistoryERA
https://www.instagram.com/quickhithistory/

I wanted to embrace two core ideas with this series: baseball is for everyone, and baseball is romantic. I use a lot of public domain archival sourced from libraries and archives - and I hope this series also helps shine a light on these important community resources we all have access to.

So if you like to nerd out over really niche baseball history, this might be the series for you.

Thanks for watching!

Basketball Reference Jim Pollard now has the earliest triple-double (December 28, 1949) in the Basketball Reference database after a recent update

Post image
21 Upvotes

Some context: Technically, it's impossible for Jim Pollard to have a triple-double in 1949-50, since rebounds were not "officially" tabulated until 1950-51.

However, just because it wasn't "official" doesn't mean that someone wasn't counting. Just as Basketball Reference has added many unofficial blocks, steals, and turnovers, we have also found some limited unofficial rebounding numbers such as pollard in that game.

So Pollard has perhaps the first triple-double in the history of basketball (and at least the first triple-double we've seen where someone was counting at least three distinct categories of positive contributions).

Baseball Reference Looking for specific statistics

Does anyone know how I can access team stats against specific pitches?

For example:
Phillies team stats against fastballs
Brewers team stats against sweepers
Dodgers team stats against splitters

Can I access these numbers on baseball reference, baseball savant or fangraphs? If so, what do I need to do to find them?

Most viewed athlete highlight package?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I was wondering if there was way of identifying the most viewed highlight clip of all time - as in a video containing a series of clips from an athlete in any sport.

I say this as I was watching Tavon Austin’s West Virginia highlights the other day (College Football) and it’s at 26 million views.

When I look at some of the top athletes, LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, Mike Tyson, Tom Brady, the highest I can find is 23m, 22m, 15m and 2.2m respectively.

Can anyone find anything higher for a single athlete?

Baseball Reference On this day in 1995, Lance Johnson became 1 of 5 White Sox players to have 6 hits in a game. 3 of those hits were triples, which is also a franchise record.

We Built the ‘Ultimate’ Immaculate Grid

I think this is something a lot of people here might enjoy.

My friend and I have been playing Immaculate Grid since it came out, and at some point we had the idea of trying to complete the “ultimate” version: every team × every team. One grid, 465 squares.

Same rules you all know. Each square needs a player who played for both franchises. The diagonal needs someone who spent their entire career with that one club.

Since you can only use each player once, we built an optimizer so you don't have to think about placement. You just add the players you can think of with as many of their teams as you know, and it arranges them to fill as many squares as possible, reshuffling earlier picks when that opens something new.

We definitely don't expect anyone to finish in one sitting. It saves your progress, so you can keep coming back to it over time and see how far you eventually get. Free, no ads :)

Huge fans of the original, this is very much built out of that. We just launched with MLB, NBA, and NFL: https://ultimategrid.app/

Would genuinely love feedback from people here since this is probably the exact community that will find all the weird edge cases we missed. If you try it, let us know what you think or what you'd like to see us add!

Baseball Reference Forgotten MLB players of the past, this baseball nerd wants you to know about

This will be a continuing series. Players that I want to shine a light on. First up is Harlond Clift.

Clift played from 1934 to 1945, 10 of those with the lowly St. Louis Browns. He was a 3rdbaseman.  Although he played in 12 seasons, really it was 9 full seasons from 34 to 42. I first discovered Clift by being a baseball geek and doing statistical deep dives. Clift’s 1937 season is the one that stands out the most. It was his only all-star year. It happened to be his highest WAR season (per baseball-reference) at 7.1. He finished 13th in MVP voting. In 37 Clift had career highs in hits, RBI’s and batting average, offensive and defensive WAR just to name a few. I point to 37 but look closely at his other years and he was the same player as when he started in 34.

Clift is the kind of player I like and would want on my team. He had 5 straight years with an OBP of .400+. He AVG 108 runs scored his first 9 years, again he only played 9 full seasons. Clift could get on base—6 seasons in the top 10, Times on Base. His 3 prime years of 36-38 he slugged over .500 and had an OPS over .900. He played an important defensive position, and he finished his career with a positive defensive WAR. His def. stats can be confusing though. He led the league in errors at 3B in 37 (34), but he also led the league in putouts 3 times, assists twice, double plays turned twice, range factor/9inn 4 times, fielding % twice. To sum up, he had a lot of chances at 3rd, so I wasn’t surprised by the number of errors.

And while he didn’t steal a lot of bases (12 is his career high) he did finish in the top 10 in power-speed 4 times.

Another fun anecdote—Clift finished his career without a negative in the 5 R categories (Rbat, Rbaser, Rdp, Rfield, Rpos). Which is not easy to accomplish.

Here’s to Harlond Clift, a forgotten player of the past that deserves a moment of recognition.
