πŸ“’ Discussion Saddest Movie Score

I'm curious: What do you consider the saddest, most heartbreaking piece of film music ever composed?

I'm not necessarily talking about the saddest movie, but a particular piece of music that hits you emotionally every single time, even without watching the scene it was written for.

I'll throw James Horner – "The Whispering Winds" into the ring. There's something about that piece that's so hauntingly beautiful and melancholic. It manages to convey an incredible amount of sadness without a single word.

What would be your pick? Which movie score absolutely destroys you emotionally?

🎢 Derivative Music 🎢 "The Docks": Piano Arrangement (from Ultima VIII: Pagan)

After I rearranged the entire MIDI score for the CRPG Ultima VIII: Pagan (1994, Origin Systems) this summer and recorded it in Cubase using modern VST instruments (Bandcamp, YouTube), I wanted to transcribe one of my favorite pieces from it for solo piano.

In doing so, I once again noticed the harmonizations, which are particularly interesting for a PC game. In addition to plenty of chromaticism and the use of mediants, interesting alterations are employed time and again.

The slightly romantic yet eerie character of this piece and its clear melodic structure have fascinated me ever since I first played the game in the late 90s. Maybe some of you will like it, too. I’d be happy to share the sheet music.

πŸ“’ Discussion Why is the bass drum + cymbal crash combo so common among classical composers like John Williams?

I was just thinking about this. I can count on one hand the times that John Williams used a bass drum without following up with a cymbal crash.

It's almost a stereotype at this point.

With such a rock-hard pattern, there must be a reason to do it that way. What is it?

πŸ“’ Discussion Published songs in a movie

As much as I love music. I love the Motion Picture Soundtracks the most. But I just don’t consider already published music a soundtrack album. But a compilation album. To me a soundtrack is music written for the movie it is in. And directors that take old music for their movies is fine but it is a compilation not original material. I love the fact that the songs picked by these people brings new listeners to the material. But as far as I’m concerned it isn’t a motion picture soundtrack. The music absolutely fits the film but it had years of radio play. One of my favorite double cds is Mozart at the Movies it covers all his works the showed up in film.

πŸ“’ Discussion Jeremy Zuckerman appreciation post (spoilers for Avatar: Seven Havens) Spoiler

I just finished watching the first three episodes of Avatar Seven Havens as they dropped here in The Netherlands.

The soundtrack is incredible. Jeremy Zuckerman used orchestrated tracks with ethnic instruments for the soudntrack of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and The Legend of Korra. But for this new show, the soundtrack went primarily Synth-based. I assume due to budget cuts, but Zuckerman also stated that it was a stylistic choice for the new show. And he did it so well. The soundtrack fits so incredibly well with the vibe and atmosphere of the show. I've had a few tracks that are on Youtube already on repeat the entire afternoon. The motives of the previous Avatar themes come back, and it's so emotionally charged when you combine it with the show itself. I cried at a few scenes in the show, as a 19 year old man/kid/teen whatever. I have high hopes for the show and I'm already in love, and these three episodes really show how versatile Zuckerman is as he even shines when it comes to using synths.

"Pavi meets Nisha" and "Kirans Lullaby" are two incredible tracks. I really hope they will be releasing the soundtrack to spotify after the season has ended.

πŸ“’ Discussion What is your favorite synth style soundtrack?

For some reason the older I get the more I enjoy 70s-80s synth soundtracks (even though I thought they were cheesy as hell when I was a kidβ€”born in the 90s).

I’m curious what everyone’s favorite synth soundtrack is and who their favorite artist is.

My personal favorite is Halloween 3 Season of the Witch but I definitely love The Terminator and Escape from New York.

πŸ“’ Discussion Which track set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe soundtracks carries the heaviest reaction every time you listen to it?

Every soundtrack has that one track on the soundtrack that no matter how many times you listen to it it gives you the heaviest reaction every time you listen to it. Heaviest reaction can be joy, anger or sadness. For the soundtracks set in The Marvel Cinematic Universe which track is that for you? for me joy is Assemble from The Avengers & Worth It as well Portals Avengers Endgame, anger is not an easy one to pick so I can’t think of one right now, sadness is Porch & Infinity War from Avengers Infinity War.

Update: Porch also makes me angry because how can Thanos just sit on his porch and enjoy a rising sun like he did nothing wrong? I am one who enjoys a good sunrise but after Thanos did that just makes me both sad and angry.
