Release I built Nagi — a glass desktop companion for Windows 11

• Upvotes

I've been working on Nagi, a desktop companion designed to make Windows 11 feel more personal and useful.

It lives at the edge of your screen in a compact glass dock, giving you quick access to:

  • 🎵 Music controls, volume and microphone status
  • 🖥️ System performance and hardware information
  • 🎮 Work, Gaming and Focus profiles
  • 🔎 Quick search for apps, files and folders
  • 🎨 Custom themes, including a Japanese-inspired black-and-red theme
  • 🛠️ Lua customization for making the interface your own

Nagi runs locally, requires no account, and is available as a portable ZIP or Windows installer.

The idea behind it is simple: A little space. More control.

I'm the developer, and I'd love to get feedback from people who enjoy customizing Windows. What would you improve, and what features would make you want to keep using it?

Looking for software Looking for an easy, free way to control PowerPoint slides with hand gestures or voice

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm working on a physics project and I'd like to control my PowerPoint presentation using hand gestures or voice commands instead of clicking through the slides manually.

The problem is that I'm not very good with this sort of thing, and whenever I search for a solution, I mostly find tutorials or projects that require me to write the code myself. I'm looking for something that's already made and ready to use, preferably free and easy to set up.

I'd like a program that uses my laptop's webcam to recognize hand gestures, or a tool that lets me say things like "next slide" and "previous slide" to control the presentation. I really don't know how to code, so building my own solution isn't an option. Does anyone know of a program that could do this? I'd really appreciate any recommendations, preferably with a link to the official download!

Thank you!

Release Wedge: a free, open-source file shelf for Windows that slides out of the screen edge while you drag (like Yoink/Dropover on Mac)

Thumbnail gallery
59 Upvotes

On Mac there are shelf apps like Yoink and Dropover for parking files mid-task. I couldn't find one I liked on Windows, so I built Wedge.

How it works

- Start dragging a file (from File Explorer, the desktop or a browser) and colored shelf tabs slide out of the right edge of the screen. Drop it on one and keep working.

- Click a tab and the shelf opens as a drawer. Drag the file straight into any app: an email, a chat, an upload form.

- Files stay where they are on disk. Wedge only keeps a reference.

Also

- Real previews, and search inside PDF, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files

- A Pocket: gather files from different folders, then drag them all out at once

- Right-click > Add to Wedge in File Explorer, Ctrl+V, or send from your phone with a QR code

- Shared shelves backed by a Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox folder

- Temporary shelves that clear themselves, plus notes, tags and reminders

- Ctrl+Shift+Space opens a drawer from anywhere; the tabs hide for full-screen games and videos

Details

- Free and open source (MIT), Windows 10 and 11

- 5 MB installer (Tauri + Rust, uses the WebView2 that comes with Windows), no CPU use while idle

- No account, no telemetry; updates come from GitHub Releases and are signature-checked

- Not code-signed yet, so SmartScreen may warn the first time (More info > Run anyway)

Source and downloads: https://github.com/Regncreative/Wedge

Feedback is very welcome, especially if you've used a shelf app before and something here feels missing or in the way.

Looking for software Student developer looking for career advice, real-world problems to solve, and project ideas

Hey everyone!

I'm a student developer from India, currently working on improving my full-stack development skills and preparing myself for software engineering internships and entry-level jobs.

I have experience with TypeScript, JavaScript, React, Next.js, Node.js, and building applications with AI/LLMs. Instead of building another basic CRUD app or following tutorials, I want to work on something that solves a genuine real-world problem.

My goals are to:

  • Become a better software engineer and build projects that demonstrate real problem-solving skills.
  • Understand what problems professionals and small businesses actually face in their daily work.
  • Build a useful project that I can showcase in my portfolio and discuss in interviews.
  • Eventually turn a solution into a small business if people find it valuable.

I'd really appreciate advice from software engineers, hiring managers, freelancers, founders, and business owners.

A few questions I'd love your perspective on:

  1. As someone hiring junior developers, what skills or projects would make you take a fresher's application seriously?
  2. What frustrating, repetitive task do you deal with at work that existing software doesn't solve well?
  3. Are there any real-world problems you think a junior developer could realistically solve with a small but well-built application?
  4. What mistakes do you commonly see in junior developers' portfolios?
  5. If you were starting your software engineering career today, what would you focus on first?

I'm not trying to sell anything. I want to learn from people with real industry experience, improve my engineering skills, and build something genuinely useful.

Even a small piece of advice or an example from your own experience would mean a lot. Thank you!

Looking for software Looking for CorelDRAW open-source alternative

I stumbled across Artcraft on github and I downloaded the apps. The thing is, I'm really used to making my projects on CorelDRAW and I wanted to know if there is an open-source alternative that is just like Corel, like Artcraft does for Adobe and many others.

Release I made SimpleSync, a tiny open-source folder sync / copy tool in C (single exe, Windows/macOS/Linux)

Hi all, I’ve been building a small tool called SailHighSea SimpleSync and just put the first pre-release up on GitHub. I’d love feedback, especially from people who copy lots of files or use USB drives and NAS shares.

What it is

A one-way folder sync and fast copy tool. It’s one small file: no installer, no runtime, portable. It’s written in C11 with raylib, MIT licensed.

Two modes

Sync tasks: pick a source and a target, and new or changed files get copied. You can run it by hand or turn on auto-sync (it watches the folder and syncs after changes stop). Optional mirror mode removes files from the target that are gone from the source.

Quick Copy: a one-off copy that is never saved, with a copy-manager style panel (pause / skip / stop, verify, file list, speed graph, log). You can drop more files or folders onto it while it runs. If a file already exists you get an overwrite dialog: overwrite, skip, keep both, or a rule for all files (older, smaller, different size, rename...).

Under the hood

Multi-threaded copying with read-ahead for small files (fewer seeks on hard disks)

Large files are read while the previous block is written

Removable drives get one writer and direct writes, since parallel writes hurt USB sticks

Optional verify: read back and compare a 64-bit hash

Light/dark/system theme, tray icon and start with Windows (Windows only for now)

Idle it uses almost no CPU, and it shrinks its memory use after a few seconds without input

Honest status

It’s early (v0.0.x). The Windows build gets nearly all my testing. The Linux and macOS builds compile in CI, but I’ve barely run them on real machines. A native Windows ARM64 build is also in CI, marked experimental. All builds are unsigned, so SmartScreen and Gatekeeper will warn.

On speed: on my Photoshop folder copy to a USB stick, an early build was a bit slower than TeraCopy (about 6 min vs 4m50s). I’ve since changed how it handles USB drives, but I haven’t re-timed it yet, so I’m not claiming to beat anything. Benchmarks on your own drives would be very welcome.

Mirror mode deletes files in the target permanently, so please try it on test copies first.

Download (Windows / Linux / macOS / Windows ARM64): https://github.com/SailHighSea/sailhighsea-ss/releases
Source, README and screenshot: https://github.com/SailHighSea/sailhighsea-ss
Bug reports, ideas and “it crashed on my distro” reports are all useful. Issues are open on the repo.

Software support Murmur: free, open-source meeting notetaker for Windows that keeps audio on your PC (I'm the developer)

Disclosure: I'm the developer.

Murmur is a free, MIT-licensed Windows app that records your mic and computer audio together, so it works with Zoom, Teams, Meet or a browser call without adding a bot to the meeting. Transcription and speaker separation run on your own PC (GPU recommended). You get a transcript with speakers, sentiment, an AI summary (with your own Claude, OpenAI or NVIDIA key; only text is sent), and TXT/SRT/Markdown export. You can also import audio or video files.

Download and setup instructions: https://github.com/muradiodev/murmur-notetaker-copilot

Feedback and bug reports are very welcome.

Discussion Twitch Live Prompting Software Development?

It's kind of a longshot idea because it requires infrastructure and a lot of constraints, but it does at least sound feasible.

It would basically be a crowd-prompted application: Twitch vibe-codes an app! Can we beat reverse-engineered Photoshop??

So the novel idea here is crowd-prompting.

I was thinking you might start with a basic Paint application and see where it goes from there, but the overall architecture would require some real maestros to implement without it getting out of hand.

Other Mandate WFH alternative for IT employees in Bangalore

By mandating a WFH option, the Karnataka State Government can significantly alleviate traffic woes in Bangalore. Companies can choose hybrid model of work where employees can be asked to visit office once a week to ensure they don't relocate permanently. This policy can help decongest roads, reduce pollution, and save countless hours wasted in traffic. Moreover, it will provide employees with a better work-life balance, a much-needed aspect of modern life that impacts both productivity and quality of life.

Self-Promotion Wednesdays AccSwap - free, open-source account switcher for game launchers (Steam,Epic and more)

I built a small Windows app for a problem I had: sharing my PC and

jumping between game launcher accounts meant logging out, typing

passwords, waiting for 2FA codes... every single time.

AccSwap saves each account's login session locally, so switching is one

click:

• Works with Steam and Epic Games, plus a declarative catalog for other

launchers (Battle.net-style paths, registry keys)

• Lives in the system tray - switch accounts with Ctrl+Alt+G without

opening anything

• 100% local: no servers, no accounts, no telemetry. Your sessions never

leave your PC

• Optional password protection (encrypted snapshots) and export/import to

move accounts between machines

• Portable exe (~750 KB), self-updates from GitHub Releases, free and

MIT-licensed

How it works: it snapshots the launcher's session files, closes the

launcher, restores the other account's files and relaunches it. Your

passwords are never stored - the login session is.

Download (Windows 10/11):

https://github.com/fredericjasmin/AccSwap/releases/latest Source & docs:

https://github.com/fredericjasmin/AccSwap

Happy to answer questions and take feature requests - especially for

which launchers to support next.

Release Looking for a modern, open-source alternative to PuTTY? SSH Pilot now supports Linux, macOS and Windows

Thumbnail gallery
8 Upvotes

This is a free, cross-platform desktop SSH/SFTP manager with integrated terminal and dual-pane file manager.

Although I started this as a hobby project, it now has many features to make life easier for sysadmins, homelabbers or anyone managing a few machines remotely. (key transfer, SCP, remote Docker container management, server metrics, etc).

AI assistance is heavily used for development so please skip if that's not your thing. The app is extensively tested though and has been well-maintained for over a year now, with over 1000 Github stars, so there is already a small but active community around it.

Until recently the app ran on Linux and macOS, but now it supports Windows too.

Feedback and thoughts are always welcome.

Release I built a free app that replaces the online PDF, image and video converters, and runs offline

I kept uploading passports and leases to random sites just to compress them, so I built one app for it. It runs on Mac, Windows and Linux.

Option Space opens a command bar. Drop a file or type "under 50 kb" and it picks the tool: PDF merge, split, compress, OCR, image compress and resize to an exact KB, background removal, video and audio trim and convert, passport photos. v0.2 adds file search as you type and a disk map that shows what's eating your space.

Native (Rust, GPUI), nothing uploaded, MIT or Apache-2.0. It's an unsigned beta, so macOS and Windows ask once on first open.

Feedback very welcome: https://github.com/anzal1/panoply

Release Looper: A New FOSS Music Player for Windows

Thumbnail gallery
23 Upvotes

A few months a go i got into the rabbit hole of FOSS Windows music players and came out not satisfied with what i found. But in that search i found a good looking player https://github.com/sthrnilshaaa/looper but it only had support for android and Linux.

So, i decided to fork it and add a bunch of new features and design it mainly for the desktop in mind. And So here is the result https://github.com/mikiyasmechalo/looper, A highly customizable music player for the desktop.

Although it technically has Linux support i haven't touched the Linux part since i don't use Linux. This is the first release so i have given it the beta tag to avoid any confusion, if you have any problems feel free to open an issue. Tnx.

Discussion What do you do while waiting for the agent to finish?

Everyone for the most part is using agents to code. Enter a prompt, wait 1 - 30+ minutes for the agent to say they are done.

What do you do while waiting? I find myself wondering off and then its difficult to focus again.
I think its just the monotony of it
