My 2-year GTX 550F refresh
Bought a 2006 Skidoo GTX 550F last fall. Prices are crazy here on the Canadian east coast and I was specifically looking for a touring fanner - simple, good for low snow and light. This one was in good shape but had a ton of miles - almost 16,000mi, but I low balled the seller to a reasonable price for the age/miles and pulled the trigger.
Compression was a little low, but i ran it bunch of times within 10 miles from home and then a longer 50 mile ride on the groomed trails last year. Always made it home safe and sound. Last year it got new wheel bearings, sliders, fresh chain case oil, drive belt, fan belt, motor mounts, carb boots and reeds, and both clutches opened, cleaned and dialed.
This year though it got major upgrades. I tore down the engine this summer, had the cylinders bored over for .25 oversized pistons, inspected the crank, bearings, new isolfex, full gasket and seal kit, a like-new 1.25" track, all new ball joints and a arm bushings and rear shock.
The electric starter gears were ground and worn out so I removed all electric start components to lighten it by 25lbs.
With the fresh powerplant, hugely improved traction and that lighter weight, I can't wait to break it in and then see what it feels like this season!
