Happy 10th Cake Day, r/snowboardingnoobs!

r/snowboardingnoobs was founded on September 25th, 2016 by u/joejance as a spinoff from the r/snowboarding sub. The very first post to the sub hit 10 days later. Congrats on 10 years!

The mods have spent the Northern Hemisphere off-season considering tweaks to make the sub more user-friendly. We're starting out the sub's 11th season by adding a subreddit wiki. We don't intend this to be a complete guide, but a summary of some of the most frequent advice for easy reference, plus pointers to favorite resources around the internet. It'll also have some basic info on interacting with the sub. For starters, we've added "How Do I Become a Snowboarder?" (tl;dr - get a lesson) and a guide to shooting video clips for feedback, partly stolen from r/skiing_feedback.

We also plan to continue dabbling with post flairs and some of Reddit's automation tools to help snowboarding noobs (who are also in many cases Reddit noobs) ask good questions and provide the right info when posting. An example is the automated "Overhang" flair, which flags those posts but also detects when a user is about to submit an overhang question and gives some general guidance on overhang.

Thanks for doing your part to make the sub what it is. Let's continue making it a place where noobs can be noobs and maybe even get some great advice sometimes!

Board help

Trying to decide between sizes on a Signal Park Pro. Either 153 or 155W.

5'7, 175 lbs without gear, size 8 boot.

I'm just out of the weight range for the 153, and right in the middle for the 155W. Only dilemma is I have a small foot. The difference is about .8 of an inch in width.

How do you protect your quiver on a flight or long trip? Researching surf and snowboard damage on flights. Quick research survey (5-7 minutes)!

Hey all, I'm a surfer, snowboarder, and founder working on a project to understand how people travel by air with boards, and what happens when things go wrong. I'm not selling anything. I'm just trying to learn from people who actually fly with their gear and working on a travel-protection idea.

The survey takes about 7 minutes max., it's anonymous, and you don't need to have flown to take it. If you've ever packed a board for a trip, I'd love your input.

I'll share what I find back here once I have enough responses. Happy to answer questions in the comments too. Thanks!

What board should I get?

Last season was my first time snowboarding, I went about 20 times and fell in love with it, I’d say I’m a pretty decent beginner, Im 20yo 160 5’5 boot size 8.5
Last year I used my buddies board so not sure what to get, probably a beginner-intermediate all mountain that does good at carving and some side jumps, I only ride at Brighton Utah.

I want something that can last and be reliable but also fun, I’m pretty much set on getting a step on set up so there’s that to keep in mind. My budget is preferably under 600$ for the board

So far I’ve looked into the Burton bad dog and Salomon assassin but would highly appreciate more suggestions as I’m not very familiar with brands

Thank you

Is this exposed wood on my new Salomon HPS Takaharu Nakai 2026 snowboard normal, or is it a defect?

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a Salomon HPS Takaharu Nakai 2026 snowboard online.

After receiving it, I noticed that part of the board's edge appears to have exposed wood, with no visible waterproof coating or sealant.

Since this is my first snowboard, I don't have enough experience to tell whether this is normal for this particular model or if it's actually a manufacturing defect.

I'd really appreciate some advice from more experienced snowboarders:

  1. Is this normal, or should I consider it a manufacturing defect?

  2. If it is a defect, are there any ways to fix or protect it without returning the board? For example, would applying some kind of waterproof sealant help prevent moisture damage?

I've attached some photos for reference.

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions! I really appreciate the help.

Which snowboard to buy?

Hi!! I'm a 173cm and 69kg and decided that I should probably buy my own gear. I have been snowboarding for few years, but not too often and on small ski slopes with no parks (so I don't need a board adjusted to them). I'm still rather mid in snowboarding as well.

Do any of you have recomendations for choosing a board- preferably the cheapest one possible as well as boots, clothes, helmets and such?

Also, do you recommend buying used boards?/ And if so how to see if it is in good shape?

What kind of bindings do you reccomend? (I have been seeing on tt some fancy clip on's or with rotating front foot - are they any good?)

Sorry for so many questions and thanks for any answers and if you have any advice for a novice please share it!

2016 Jones Solution Splitboard

Found a 2016 Jones Solution for a low price. Board is in good shape but curious how it stacks up compared to a modern split board. Is the tech super outdated or still a capable board by today’s standards?

Help with large boots

I'm a size 15 Mens (US). Last season I wore size 13 snowboarding boots and while they did work, my feet definitely weren't comfortable. When I search for boots sized 15 the sites selling always max out at 13. So I am just wondering is 13 the max or does anyone know a boot I can buy

Absolute beginner advice

I'm a Florida native that loves snow trips, since most of my year is + 100F degrees. Last season I tried snowboarding for the first time. I spent the whole time on the kiddie slope for 2x days just getting comfortable staying on the board down the hill, practicing turning and (unsuccessfully) stopping without bailing.

This winter I'll head out for another couple days and this time I'm tackling the green slope for the first time. Any advice for a complete beginner, maybe some tactics or direction on what I should be practicing the most? Would love to be prepared for a longer run than the bunny one and get the most out of my time out there.

Might eventually get my own board and gear, but not sure if that's even relevant with the short amt of time I spend per year in the snow.

Any tips are welcome, TIA!

Snowjacket and snowpants recs pls!!

I'm planning on getting good but affordable snowboarding equipment. It's my first season, and this year I wanna focus on my jacket and pants (probably gonna get the board in my second season, need to see how it goes). I'm really interested in this set from snowears, but I want to hear from people who have fr tried out this brand before. It's genuinely exactly like the set I've always imagined in my head, but I really want whatever I get to be durable. I just want this to be a one and done thing, I wanna get smt that'll last me for at least a few years. It's coming to about $500 for the whole thing (it's like the baggy burgundy set they have). Thoughts ?

Thoughts on the Bataleon Blow?

Coming back from a shoulder dislocation last season. Physio cleared me, everything’s good. Was just thinking a softer board might help in regaining my muscle memory and confidence in riding again this coming season.

How is it as a beginner-intermediate progression board? Gonna be doing laps in groomers and also slowly going back to the park with it.

Mounting Bindings

Just about to purchase a new Burton board with the channel system. I have Salomon District bindings with the disc shown in the photo.

Couple of questions, are the single holes at the top and bottom of the disc now my new mounting points?

I’m gonna need new hardware, what one do I purchase out of the two shown in the post?

Thanks in advance, the internet was confusing me.

Demon X V7 vs Xion freeride evo?

Hey guys, stuck between the Demon X V7 and Xion Freeride Evo impact shorts for snowboarding. I wear TNF Dragline bibs for reference.

The Xions look lower profile, but is the tailbone protection significantly worse than the Demon if you take a hard slam on icy groomers? And do the Demons feel super stiff or restrictive when actually riding and turning, or do they move well?

I am wondering:
Is Xion actually enough protection for tailbone and hip slams compared to Demon?
How are their for comfort, mobility, and heat when riding around?

Any feedback from anyone who used either of these would be great, thanks!

Gloves from a Chinese brand

I’m considering buying the gloves in the link...

It sounds good; I’ve heard this brand has many quality products, but there are very few reviews for these specific gloves...

I’d appreciate some input—does anyone own these gloves, or has anyone had a chance to see or handle them in person?

Also, are there any similar alternatives?

Any snowboarding advice or tips for a skier?

Just wanna start this off by saying pls don't hate on the fact I used to ski, it's fun and I liked it.

So last year I skiied for the first time and bought ski's with my own money and decided to ski with my snowboarder friends for a season. It was lots of fun and I actually picked up skiing surprisingly easily and am now what is probably considered a intermediate skier. Now I decided I wanted to try snowboarding so I bought a snowboard and bindings and am gonna do ski bus this year, this means I will be up on the mountains at least once a week.  I'm just looking for a any advice or tips on how to have the most fun and progress fast so I can ride more with my friends.
