I don't know if this is the right place to post this, and I am also not really active on this platform at all, but I digress.
So, as some if you know, in 1996 there was this great rallying game called Network Q RAC Rally Championship. As a kid, and still to this day, I absolutely love this game. Having the long stages and the way you could set up the car at that time was, pretty dang amazing.
But something was always missing.
I mean sure, having 5 cars to choose from, ranging from the Impreza, Escort, Megane, Golf, Felicia and Wira was pretty neat. But of course, as a rally fan, what would it be like to drive other cars in this game, such as maybe a Lancer Evo or a Celica or whatnot.
And I tried doing just that. Try to do something, for as far as I know, no one has ever tried before.
Modifying Network Q RAC Rally Championship.
With the tools at our disposal nowadays, it actually gets pretty easy to do just that!
(And with that, yes, I am using AI to code things in the game) But when it comes to the creative part such as changing the graphics, I'd rather do that on my own, since I do have that knowledge
So what I started out with is, seeing if we could apply a new skin to one of the cars.
In this case, I chose the Proton Wira, since in the game that came out a year later, there is actually a Lancer Evo car. Low and behold, they both share the same model.
And I managed to successfully implement that skin, onto the Wira!
But.... why stop there? If anything, we could see if it might be possible to actually add another car within the game.
Safe to say, it has been done! The Lancer has been implemented as it's own car within the game. Now, note, this is still a work in progress, and what pretty much has been done, is clone the Wira within the game, and then changing small steps from there, such as the identification of the car, changing it from the 5-speed from the Wira to the 6-speed of the Lancer, changing the behavior of the engine and so on.
Note: this is still a work in progress, once the Lancer is fully implemented in the game, we might look and see if there is a way to model new specific cars and add those into the game, just taking things step by step. Also I'm not really sure if I should release this thing to the public, but I thought this was a fun thing to share with the people who are a fan of this game!
Update 17-10-2026
I've done a few more updates to the game. I've succeeded to add in the Corolla WRC model from the following Magnetic Fields game: International Rally Championship. With great success!
First it was a matter of checking if the game would accept it, which it did. From there it was tweaking and retracing all the steps which we've done with the Lancer.
Both the Lancer and the Corolla both have their own loading screens, proper car specification screens, are included in their own class and I've started to experiment with making custom dashes, first for the Corolla, since that is an entire new build.
Next step would probably to see if we could get other models in, mayhaps from different games, if the game would allow it. Not taking away the aesthetic from the game itself. If the shapes match, we can match the textures to the game itself. This process will probably take more time but it looks really promising from the start of things!
