Hi r/simonfraser! With course enrolment coming up soon, we are here to help! FASS advisors Colin, Emilia, and Marilyn along with Albert from Career Services will be here on October 22 (Thur) at 1:00pm PCT to answer your questions.
Drop your questions below — all SFU students can join! Just make sure to keep your questions FASS and undergraduate-related.
FYI if your questions are too specific to your situation, we encourage you to reach out directly to your advisor! If they’re not FASS-related, we’ll do our best to answer them but we’ll likely direct you to the appropriate unit.
Ask us anything FASS-related, including:
• Program planning
• The difference between a major, minor, joint major, and a certificate
• The course enrolment process and tips & tricks
• Career prospects for a particular program
• And more!
Long commute / packed schedule + a photo day coming up, so I need to shower and get fully ready on campus.
I’m bringing my own hair dryer.
How are the changerooms at the gym/pool for this? Are they under construction? Or is there a quieter place on campus with a shower stall and nearby plugs?
Appreciate any recommendations!
I have my bpk 142 midterm Tuesday I am currently 4 lectures and the lab portion behind. How fucked am I? I’ll stay up tonight and tomorrow all day will I still be fucked? Any tips or tricks? I need helppp…..
There are way too many people on campus, limited study spots, no parking. Why are all my lectures full of people yapping? Especially if they're recorded and attendance isn't recorded. Also since there is literally no study spaces, people are using designated silent spaces as a place to chat with their friends.
Like you don't have to come to campus! Let those that actually want to learn the space to do so please!!! Its basic human decency!
Has anyone taken CMPT 225 with Igor Shinkar before? How difficult was the midterm, and what would you recommend focusing on when studying? Any tips would be appreciated!
I have a BISC 102 midterm coming up in just under two weeks, and I was wondering if you have any recommendations for effective study strategies for the course. I want to make sure I am focusing on the right material and preparing in a way that helps me understand the concepts rather than simply memorizing them. If anyone has previously taken this course, please let me know if there is something I should prioritize studying for the midterm.
Anyone, ANYONE taking INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH METHODS IN PSYCHOLOGY (4) with Peter Leavitt this term or the past term can you please share syllabus and textbook required?!?!
Any recommendations for the non-business elective requirements? I want something that is not going to take a lot of my effort and a class that is genuinely interesting. I am not interested in history or social studies type classes. One I am considering is REM100
Hi everyone! I hope yall are having a great day :) I’m a grade 11 Alberta student and I’m thinking of applying to the kinesiology program next year so I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the program in terms of classes, professors, admission advice, etc. Thanks everyone!!
Does anything happen at SFU during Halloween? I have never done anything for it but this time I’m in the mood. Do people dress up on campus? I doubt it’ll be open on that day though. What do students do to celebrate Halloween?
Hi there, I'm taking CMPT 125 this term (Fall 2026) with Bobby Chan. I just barely passed the first midterm (my score was 54, the median was 55). I would appreciate if those who've taken the course b4 can give me some advice on how to improve. Also, is this course curved? I feel like it should be since the MT1 average was so cooked 😭
I did not escape death by beating cancer to suffer in my philosophy class from someone’s disregard for hygiene. I don’t know this females name, nor do I remember what she looks like, but for the love of god I hope you know the duress you have made my nose go through. I unfortunately sat next to you for the first week of lecture and I vowed myself to avoid you at all times. You smelt like sweated onions every time you moved your arms. I was dying inside. I almost felt like I was punished for being alive. My poor friends last week had the unfortunate chance of sitting behind you and they nearly shed tears. This isn’t an isolated incident. It’s bad. Chemo has made my hair fall out, you’ve burnt my nostril hair off. Everything else seems to be okay, you seemed clean otherwise. Just carry a stick of deodorant with you, wherever you go. This goes for everyone, idc how clean you think you are, wear deodorant
I’ve been sick for the past 2 weeks and I fell really behind on school. While I did try to push on and continue keeping up with my courses, I think there’s a limit to how much work I can get done in a day while sick. I don’t see any sign of recovery as well possibly due to me working while sick. I also work part time.
I was wondering if anyone had any advices cuz I’m pretty overwhelmed right now. Thank you.
I keep getting followed by new confession pages, getting excited that they're back, and then watching them go quiet again. I wanted to give it another go.
I'm a CS student and made Looseword, a free site to go with the pages. The Google Form syncs to Looseword automatically, so you can read approved confessions there between Instagram batches. You can read the old SFU archives and reply to posts there too.
I want the instagram page to post automatically once it has five or more approved confessions ready, with gaps between batches so we don't take over your feed. And also so the account doesn't just go dark during exam season or randomly.
If you've got your own confessions or stories, send them here!
If anything's broken or you've got suggestions, let me know.
PS: These are new independent pages. Older posts on the site are marked as archives.
So I was scrolling through my department’s faculty page because i was bored i guess. and one prof has an active study going that literally applies the content im learning in my degree with a legitimate strong hobby and passion of mine.
ive never had this prof before because they only teach upper division courses (and they’re actually not teaching any courses this year) and im only in my second year. when i go to the study website, they only have phd and masters students who have this prof as a supervisor. and the contact page only mentions “are you interested in opportunities to join the team as a phd student”.
im genuinely super interested in this subject though. And i know people say to just email and ask, but would that be appropriate to do? Because i mean… im an undergrad and their website only has graduate students on the team. And I’ve never had this prof. Should i wait until next year or something when i have a little more knowledge in my degree and maybe have taken one of this prof’s courses before reaching out? This prob reads as so desperate 😭😭
Hi! I'm starting my MASc in Engineering Science at SFU soon, and my offer includes guaranteed funding for two years.
I know this funding can come from different sources, including TA positions, but I'm a bit confused about how it works.
If I take on extra TA work, would that be paid on top of my guaranteed funding, or would it just replace part of what I'm already getting?
Also, how many TA positions do grad students usually take per semester? I'm trying to figure out if taking on more TA work is a realistic way to earn some extra money.
Would love to hear from anyone who's been in a similar situation. Thanks!
I am a grad student coming to Vancouver to attend a 1 day conference. I was planning to stay the night at Vancouver airport because the conference ends at 8pm and my flight back is the next morning (dont want to splurge on a hotel). I'm bringing a gym bag with just a change of clothes and some toiletries, but I don't want to carry it to the conference and it'll look unprofessional as well carrying it around, is there somewhere safe on the campus where I can drop my bag off in the morning and pick it up after the conference? I am also willing to pay someone to leave it at their dorm and pick it up later. Would anyone be willing to do this?
The conference is close to SFU campus which is why i am asking here
For nearly 30 years, the "Comprehensive" tier belonged to SFU, UVic, Guelph, and Waterloo, with Waterloo always locked in the top three. Now that Maclean’s has ditched the old categories for strict size brackets, Waterloo jumped to the "Large" tier, landing a solid 4th. Meanwhile, former medical-doctoral heavyweights like Saskatchewan and Manitoba have slipped way below SFU and UVic.
This year, Maclean’s only counts full-time equivalents, totally ignoring part-time students. SFU has a massive part-time commuter base. If you factor in raw headcount, SFU clears 37,000 students—instantly bypassing Queen’s and McMaster, and sitting right on McGill’s heels.
If the rankings actually counted every warm body on campus, SFU wouldn't be big-fishing the mid-size pond. It would be a top-five giant in the large university tier.
I’m planning on majoring in one of these with the hopes of doing an internal transfer to business or kinesiology since I couldn’t get a spot in pre calc 12. which would be easier?
i'm a 3rd year computer science major and i'm just sick of this program. I feel like i never actually apply all the theory i learn from classes into actual code or projects or anything of substance. so many of these profs have no idea how to actually teach the class or make ridiculously hard midterms and tests. I feel like i'm just doing this all of nothing bc my degree won't even guarantee me a job and it's sucking the life out of me. I got no idea what to do from this point in my life now any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
edit: to everyone saying "just make projects outside of class" I do with the very little time I have left outside of these classes. It helps but still doesn't make me hate my classes and degree any less than i do. Also i'm in the process of a co-op. Which also doesn't address the core issue here that i hate my degree.
