๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐น๐ (Resource) ๐๐ฑ๐๐พ๐ฏ ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐๐น๐๐ฉ๐ | Shavian Resources
There is a wealth of wonderful resources for Shavanists of all proficiency levels. This post lists some of the great starting points out there.
Learning
Shavian School by [u/ProvincialPromenade](u/ProvincialPromonade) is a well-paced, didactic course for learning the letters of the Shavian alphabet.
Hello Shavian by [u/ansunian](u/ansunian) introduces the alphabet in a series of Youtube videos, and offers interactive practice and a comprehensive worksheet you can print out for practicing offline.
Translating
[u/Dechifro](u/Dechifro) (Dave Coffin) has published a sophisticated python script for transliterating English to a multitude of phonetic scripts, including Shavian. It's also available as a Firefox plugin so you can browse the web in Shavian.
Shave by [u/cozmic72](u/cozmic72) (Joro) is a sophisticated interactive transliterator built on top of the ideas in Dechifroโs tool. It can also be used as a reverse transliterator, a Shavian web browser and an ebook reader.
Practicing and playing
Shaw-Type by [u/cozmic72](u/cozmic) (Joro) is a typing practice tool, with built in support for most popular keyboard layouts for Shavian (you can even define your own layouts.) A global leaderboard allows you to show off your typing prowess to all.
Shingo by Haley Wakamatsu is probably the most popular Shavian word game out there - think Wordle, but using the Shavian alphabet.
Reading
A right of passage for every budding Shavanist is to read the Shawโs Alphabet edition of Bernard Shawโs Androcles and the Lion. If you can find a physical copy, great, otherwise there is a scan available on the Internet Archive. (The side-by-side typography of the original edition is fantastic, but should you prefer to read a digital copy, Dechifro has made a copy available here).
u/LillyPip (Lilly Piper) published her debut novel, Blue Are The Hills, in Shavian! Available on Amazon.
The amazing Michael Everson typeset and published a Shavian version of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Transliterated by John Tenniel.
A library of high-quality transliterations of public domain books is available at Shave Books. Click on words in the text to see the original, and thereโs even a mode where you can read books in both scripts side-by side. The tool can also be used to convert any e-book of your own choosing.
Shavian.info has published a couple of titles in print, including Jane Austenโs Pride and Prejudice and Arthur Conan Doyleโs a Study In Scarlet, and also provides a number of digital titles.
Reference
Readlex, by u/Ormins_Ghost, is the most widely-used Shavian spelling dictionary, rooted in the original spelling principles laid out in Androcles and the Lion by its transliterator, Peter MacCarthy.
Shaw-spell is built upon an extended version of Readlex, and it adds word definitions, taken from the Open English Wordnet. It is available as a web UI or a native macOs spellchecker and dictionary.
The original Guide to Shavaian Spelling is a must-read, along with the Shavian.info's updated Spelling Guide.
Keyboards
The easiest way to get set up with typing in Shavian on your computing device of choice, is to use one of the Keyman layouts provided on Shavian.info.
Fonts
Shavian.info is also home to some of the most commonly used Fonts, including Evan Gallagerโs own Inter Alia, Doolittle Garamond and Cafe Majestic.
Haley Wakamatsuโs fonts vary from whimsical to beautiful, from lo-fi to ornate. Chances are youโll find one you like on her font page.
General resources
Shavian.info by u/Ormins_Ghost is a great source of information about the script and its history, and is the best place to go to find information about keyboards and fonts.
Haley Wakamatsu, best known for her incredible fonts, also has a great landing page on Shavian at shavian.neocities.org
Leo Philp wrote a fantastic three-part series of blog posts documenting the development of the alphabet, available here (part 1), here (part 2) and here (part 3).
A lot of valuable information about Shavian can be learned from the introduction to and the appendices of the Shawโs Alphabet edition of Androcles and the Lion.
Discord user Weirdboi has provided a far more comprehensive resource guide than the current one! Available on Google docs.

Shavian Bluesky feed
I'm sure most are already aware, but for anyone who isn't, there's a custom feed on Bluesky you can use to find everyone posting there in Shavian:
https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:rexspsjhwfo34535h2jlip3f/feed/aaalkodjph2sm
There's a small but enthusiastic Shavian community there and I'm sure they'd love more people to talk to!
The feed automatically lists any and all posts made that include Shavian characters, so you don't have to include any specific tags or reply to any specific accounts to participate โ just post something in Shavian and the community will see.
N.B.: By the nature of Bluesky (and unlike here) the feed can't be moderated, so you might find you occasionally have to mute or block some users posting things you don't want to see in the feed or making unpleasant replies to your own posts.

๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐น๐ (Resource) Shave 5.0 is out, with a vastly improved Shavian e-book reader and editor
Prompted by some super feedback by u/SeveralCockroach365, I rolled up my sleeves this weekend and gave Shave Books some love. The result is Shave 5.0, which is now live. The main new features are:
- Proper e-pub TOC (Table of Contents) support - both in the editor and in the reader. Now books that put multiple chapters in one file (like Winnie the Pooh) can be navigated properly using the actual internal chapter structure.
- Vastly improved highlighting, comments, and bookmarks, including the ability to find your highlights and comments in the reader
- Much more responsive and smooth editing experience, and vastly improved off-line editing and reading support.
- More reliable place-keeping, also when you change the font size or orientation - no more hunting around to find where you left off in the book. (The searchable highlights and bookmarks also definitely help here.)
Give the newly improved Shave Books a spin at shave.joro.io/books and let me know what you think!
Don't hesitate to reach out with any feature requests or issues of your own.

PSA: Reddit's "translations" of Shavian are (still) hopeless
It's a well known fact for long-standing members of the Shavian sub-reddit, but I'd like to point out to new visitors that Reddit's auto-translations of Shavian produces absolute nonsense.
Take this recent exchange. u/pwffin told us:
I am reading Winnie the Pooh now. Next I'll read Blue Are the Hills by Lilly Piper.
Instead, what Reddit's AI tells us u/pwffin said is:
Thanks for the info ยท I really appreciate it ยท Let's go do something fun. Don't worry about it ยท I got your back ยท What's the deal ยท Cool ยท 1st floor.
This is ridiculous.
I have raised the issue with Reddit devs repeatedly, but their answer is unfortunately that they'll "work on improving the feature". They are deaf to my appeal to make it possible for moderators to disable it for an entire sub-reddit.
For now, all we can do is offer new-comers the advice to turn off the feature themselves. On mobile, go to your user profile, tap the menu button at the top right (โก) then go to your account settings, to Language and translations, and un-check the "Auto-translate" setting.
If you find yourself needing a reliable translation anyway, you can paste the text into a decent LLM, or (shameless plug of my own tool) you can use Shave's reverse transliteration functionality.

All quiet on the Shavian front
โฆ mabye everyone is too busy reading to post anything? Thatโs my excuse, anyway.
I just finished up reading Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep, a very well written and prescient tale. Our present day AI models would run circles around the Nexus-6 โ thank Mercer we havent come along quite as far in robotics or bio-enginering.
My current read is All Quiet On the Western Front. A harrowing, incredibly vivid chronicle โ a first hand account of what it was like to be in the trenches during the first world war.
What are you reading?

๐ฃ๐ง๐ค๐ (Help) Is there a repository of Shavian books as EPUBs?
I know about https://shavian.info/books/ but it takes a bit of work to create EPUB files for e-readers from plain text files. So I'm just curious if such an ebook stash for Shavian already exists.

This kind of transliteration is surprinsingly subjective. But I feel like poetry suits Shavian.

Beginner reading practice at Hello, Shavian!
Did you know the Hello, Shavian! site has a Practice Room you can use alongside the video course?
Choose a lesson, read a Shavian word, and type what it says in ordinary spelling to check your answer. Each lessonโs practice uses only letters introduced up to that point, so you can start small and build your reading confidence as you go.
The Practice Room is free, and you can keep going for as long as you like: https://orcachuckle.com/helloshavian/#practice-room

๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐น๐ (Resource) Sound-writing
Back in April, I went on a bit of a pilgrimage, and my travels took me to the Museum of English Rural Life in Reading, England. One of the many highlights of the visit, was thumbing through and reading the catalogue to the Sound-writing exhibition which was put on in 1972, chronicling the evolution of Read's alphabet and the Herclean effort that resulted in the publication of Androcles and the Lion.
While I am not at liberty to share photographs of the document, I was granted permission to share transcriptions. The linked blog-post contains a faithful transcription of the entire catalogue text in both ABC and Shavian scripts.
It is a fascinating read. My favourite quote from the text is probably:
When, around Christmas 1941, I read Shaw's Preface, I was 54, old enough to back keen interest with long perseverance.
I hope you find the essay as intriguing as I did!
[The picture is plate three of Kingsley Read's competition entry - this is the copy from the Pitman Collection, Bath, England.]
