Hey guys.
So, a few years ago I made a TrueNAS Core server to setup as mostly a dump for family pictures and to use for PLEX streaming (the latter which i never could get working).
Since I set it up, I kind of regret going with TrueNAS core. When I built it, I only put in one large capacity drive and my plan was to add in more storage when I could, like with Unraid or something. However it wasn't until after I built it and had files on it that I learned you can't do that, and that I'd need to reformat everything to add in new drives.
Additionally, now I want to self host a Windrose game server, but because Core is BSD based, I'm discovering there's no way that I can do that without more tinkering than I know how to do. And that's part of the issue. Frankly, the way its set up is too much for me to learn while I have data I don't want to risk losing. I was hoping to dive in and learn as I go, but I've never found my footing and now feel too timid to try and experiment in case I screw something up.
I want a fresh start, something more flexible than Core (which i know is being phased out anyway) that will do what I'd like it to do (NAS, Jellyfin media server, selfhosting, possibly virtualization), while also being flexible so I can try and fail without risking my data. So, two questions:
what would be a good server to try? I have a license for HexOS from a while ago, Unraid is something I know is powerful but I don't have any specific knowledge of it, and I saw on another thread someone brought up using a hypervisor, which sounds attractive since I want to learn more about VMs and VM management. But for all of this, I know I have lots of partial knowledge but lack a deep enough understanding to string it all together.
How can I handle the roughly 6tb of personal data already on my NAS? I have a couple of ideas, but I don't feel confident on them.
Thank you guys for your help. And if anyone has any learning resources where I can build out my fundamental knowledge, I'd appreciate those suggestions too.
