Resources / Tools Savage Spelljammer: Adventures In Space

I posted a rough draft of my Spelljammer conversion from the old 2E AD&D to SWADE.

I've made some changes based on feedback and I added the rest of the conversion including setting rules, edges, hindrances, races and magic items.

Again, I'm eager to get constructive feedback.

Is it easy to understand? Do the rules, edges, etc.. make sense?

As always, thanks for looking and enjoy.

Note: Still working on the bestiary/adversaries section.

Question How to challenge legendary characters?

I don't know how many other people have played into "epic levels" in Savage Worlds. I probably should have paced my campaign better. I've run around 70 sessions of my campaign and they are at around the 125 XP mark. The game is starting to break down. Almost all characters have taken Uncanny Reflexes (dodge AoEs), Missile Deflection (ranged attacks against parry), Arcane and Improved Arcane Resistance (a LOT of powers seem to be resisted by a default roll rather than an opposed roll, meaning they are almost guaranteed to succeed). Some of them have gotten their Parry to the high teens and Toughness into the high 20s while shape shifted. They also have that "heroic powers" thing from fantasy companion that gives them some buff powers to auto activate as limited free action. Juices their stats even more. I may be describing it wrong but im the past I have verified that it was being played correctly.

I have custom built monsters for them to face, as the versions in the fantasy bestiary were an absolute joke. In fact there are very few creatures in the core game that can challenge them. I've sent high level pseudo-wild-cards against them, and wild cards, and that does help a bit.

I understand that epic level is epic level, and I am not complaining about the system (I would prefer missile deflection to be based off of agility instead and be a substitute or alternate for dodge, just flavor wise, especially in a setting with guns). But there are a lot of things, like Trademark Weapon and Improved Trademark weapon for example, that put them numerically above a monster, who can't really equal those stats. A d12 fighting is already meant to be world class. Claws can't really be a "trademark" weapon. The system really is losing its sense of scale after a point.

Currently the best thing I have against them are monsters that spam AoE attacks and have fairly high toughness. But for characters that have 20+ toughness even a 5d6 raised blast powder only shakes them around half the time, and there are less-tough characters who get absolutely nuked by that.much damage. I do try to not hit them, but that's gotten easier because those characters have started avoiding combat entirely.

Any advice on this? Really the only thing that can truly challenge some of these characters is being caught flatfooted by assassins with d12 stealth, but "haha I killed you with the drop" isn't fun or challenging.

Anyone else have experiences running games at legendary tier they'd like to share? Any genre. Mine is basically eberron style steampunk, for reference, but I'm sure this is a less of an issue in settings without magic (and especially without the fantasy companion involved, though I do think Missile Deflection and Uncanny Reflexes are important edges, especially the latter as there's no dodge option for AoEs otherwise that I know of)

Question Cyberpunk Netrunning "Arcane Background"

Does anyone know of a module or homebrew where Netrunning is treated like an arcane background which have an appropriately flavored "spell list" ?

PS: Do you guys know of any actual Cyberpunk 2077 SWADE conversions out there? I'm having a hard time finding anything besides Interface Zero and Sprawlunners which I think are a little meh.

Question Countering Area Attacks

I have a party that is a *little* obsessed with Selective Area Attacks. They are Veteran Rank and I am looking for ways to make fights more challenging for them in new and interesting ways. I've spread out my mooks about as far as I can for some battles, but then it can be difficult to get gang up bonuses and the like. I have also led them from one fight to another without them having recovery time to up the challenge. What am I overlooking as to ways to challenge a party with a bunch of extras and small amount of Wild Cards? Obviously, I am not out to kill them I just want to make them sweat.

I give you an idea, the main bad guys are elves who live on a series of islands. The elves sent a child outside of town to say they are inside the town, but the PCs don't realize the child is leaving them to an ambush site. I'm trying to make the fight interesting. Archers on the roofs, maybe some command edges for the mooks (I am tempted to use a shield wall. These are not typical D&D elves)> I just don't know hence I am looking for advice.

Question GM Screen Inserts for a low fantasy campaign?

I know there are official SWADE GM inserts, but I know things like that tend to be a little overpopulated. Not to mention outdated.

Are there any community made GM-Screen inserts that may be more useful? I'm a new GM so I'm happy to have all the basic stuff on there, I just need to make sure I have the appropriate tables for the fantasy book and all that.

Each green dot is an extra, each blue dot is a "mild card" basically just an extra good extra, and each red dot is a Wild Card, except for the big one, which is a wild card riding on the shoulders of another, bigger, wild card. Pinks are PC-aligned WCs

Question Ideas for building a horror monster NSFW

Post image
16 Upvotes

I made this NSFW on the off chance someone gets spooked out by the image.

A while ago I made a post about doing a horror SWADE campaign and Im happy to report its going amazing. They've had one brief run in with this monster (named The Composer) and they hate it! In a good way lol.

But I need to build him up stat wise as a big boss level baddie. I already have them having to collect certain relics in order to actually fight him. I think my players are currently seasoned. Idk how leveled they'll be by the time they actually do combat with The Composer.

The Composer plays and eldritch song from its phonograph head. This makes players do a fear check. Rolling on the fear table has been fun!

His cable tentacles can attach into people's body's and control them and steal their voices. I will use this in the fight to give him "minions". The catch is all of his minions will be NPCs the players care about.

His claws are phonograph needles. When he makes a grapple on an enemy, he plays out their deepest fears for all to hear. Another fear check. Or maybe steal a benny?

Past that, I havent built anything up. Any ideas for edges or special abilities? What type of stats should he have? Is there a good monster that I can just re-skin?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Photo/art credit somethatcallmeem. I commissioned him for this. DM me if you're interested in seeing more of his work. Or look him up on Instagram.

Question Questions About the Power Levels of PC and Enemies

So, I’ve been reading some posts about how combat balance isn’t important and that I shouldn’t worry so much about it because the game mechanics make it unpredictable. I’m totally on board with that, but I still have a problem: how do I choose the enemies? I get the part about not overthinking the encounters—using two extras per PC plus a leader wildcard. But what enemies do I pit against my party?? Using creatures from the SWADE Core Rulebook: A dragon isn’t as strong as an Orc Chieftain, who isn’t as strong as a vampire—and they’re all wildcards. Same goes for the extras.

My point is that I understand there’s no need to calculate a CR budget to create an encounter with just the right difficulty, but I’d like to have some guidelines for choosing—and even designing—the creatures my party will face.

Question Black Friday Sale?

Since we're getting closer to that time of year, does SW have any good sales? I've gotten the Pathfinder Core rulebook box set, Player guide 1&2 and all of the beastiary cards. Is it worth waiting to pick up SWADE & some of the companion books? I'm also looking into getting the PF campaign box sets.

Question Looking for Virtual Reality hacking/combat suggestions

I'm GMing a game for my family using SWADE and the Sci-fi compendium. I'm describing the game as "An adventure TV show about a family that lives in space". My son (8) is playing a hacker and gadget based character. Netrunning rules don't really work well for our setting because the card suite intrusions usually don't apply. I've described dramatic tasks with good results. But we're also looking to have VR hacking at times be more like a VR combat I want to have situations where he virtually battles other hackers for control of a system, or battles an AI for control of a station's various systems.
Anyway. I'm looking for feedback and suggestions for what I've come up with to facilitate a VR combat. Or maybe I'm re-inventing the wheel and there is already a good system sitting a book waiting for your to suggest it to me.

So far I've run it like this:

You're hacking skill acts like your fighting skill

Electronics acts like your shooting/acrobatics skill

Parry is your hacking skill ÷2+2
Base toughness is your smarts ÷2+2

And then combat ensues.

Damage has been D6 for range and 2D6 for melee. We've ignored most combat mechanics like pace, cover, etc. The narrative of it is quite infinite, shooting could be pulling a gun and firing, or throwing a fireball, or summoning an anvil to drop on someones head. It still does the same damage and is mechanically the same.

It works, but I'm not quite happy with it. Hoping for some feedback or suggestions. It feels a bit restrictive compared to actual combat and ends up just being back and forth rolls ot hit. But also feels like it might be overly complicated if we started expanding the rules or threw the whole combat rules set at it.

Question Slings shooting or throwing?

My campaign group was having a debate on whether sling weapons would count as throwing or shooting. Is there any official ruling?

Edit-thanks all for the replies. Turns out based on the responses and some digging online my friend who runs the campaign has an older, outdated version of the book which I didn't realize, which doesn't specify what slings use. So appreciate the responses, clears up the confusion!

Question Giving a boss extra wounds so they don't get obliterated

I have a really cool Griffin ambush planned. How ever, my players are all knights in heavy armor with warhorses and typically obliterate the griffin in my test runs.

What can I do besides give them more wounds?

Resources / Tools Blood science enemies, missions and equipment

I'm GMing a post apocalyptic setting where medieval-level tech is normal, but anything more advanced is powered by the user's blood. This is called Hemoscience and it's basically technobabble with blood (kind of BetaX).

With this tech humans burned the planet and now they live in an artifact-town, going outside to get blood and resources.

I have basic weapons and equipment, and some enemies. There are bookeepers that store knowledge, psychics and the regular explorers so I'm looking for suggestions on enemies, missions and other equipment outside the just weapons i can use to give my players

Question Pathfinder Class Rules/Reference Material?

The question's simple, but I don't know if anyone has the answer, beyond the authors themselves.

Are there any guidelines/references/rules for creating classes the same way as they are in Savage Pathfinder? I know they're not listed in the book, but I didn't know if anyone had "cracked the code" or if an author put out a reference document.

I would like to experiment with creating more Pathfinder classes, with a final goal of using the same approach to potentially adapt Starfinder ones. (If they won't do it, I will lol). That said, I don't wanna go in "raw" with no guideline or starting point. I'd much prefer having a guideline of some kind to start from.
