In light of all the bot spam we're introducing a new posting rule

Hi everyone! I know most of you have probably noticed the absolutely unrelenting bot posts lately. Myself and the other mods have been trying our best to remove those posts and ban the bot users, thanks to all your reports we have been doing an okay job of it until recently. The last few months these types of posts have been absolutely obnoxious, not just in our community but in many others, and we are having a hard time keeping up because we aren't bots but just a bunch of Samoyed lovers with families and other commitments :)

After talking to some regulars here and the other active moderator we have decided to try out implementing a minimum karma to post certain types of posts. Text posts will not be affected as we certainly always welcome discussion and questions in this community! We welcome your feedback and please continue reporting any suspicious posts and comments you see.

Thank you,

r/samoyeds Mod team

How to manage carpet butt floof

Post image
54 Upvotes

Hi all,

I need help with managing my sammy’s butt floof. I have to be honest and apologise but I have not really been able to routinely brush her, prob 2-3 times a week due to my work schedule.

She’s now developed this tangled/kinky floof on her hind and butt. It’s not matted.

She’s okay everywhere else but since we moved to our new fully carpeted apartment, I’ve noticed this.

I use a detangling spray and a metal comb to brush it whenever I can but just wont straighten or look like the rest of her floof.

Have you got any advise? Thank you in advance.

She’d been sitting right next to this tree and refusing to come in for breakfast. This is what I saw when I went out to get her. I was shocked to say the least!

Extremely sensitive stomach

I know medical advice is not allowed. But I know as a breed, Samoyeds are known for having highly sensitive stomachs. My 1 y 4 month old female Samoyed gets frequent diarrhea. We are currently working with the vet to rule out different allergies. She does love to eat random things off the ground which we do our best to prevent. Her energy and appetite are normal.

Does anyone have experience with their Samoyed having frequent bouts of diarrhea, what’s worked for you, etc ? Thanks in advance for any insight and/or solidarity!

Biting and growling at 1,8 yo

Lately when out for walks on the fields when she finds a mouse hole or a mole hole or similar, she ignores all my commands and just straight up starts digging up these holes... if I try to pull her away or grab her by the collar she straight up goes and tries to bite me and growls at me... this has started happening about 3 months ago and it's getting more and more frequent... how do I stop this behaviour or she just needs to grow out of it?

Hey everyone, I just want to be clear that this isn't my dog. My wife found her while on the humane society website and I just wanted to get the word out to this wonderful community.

Hopefully a responsible owner needs another tiny polar bear in their life 🐻‍❄️

Thanks everyone, have a great day.

Looking for a Dog Trainer (South Bay Area, Cali) Experienced with Reactive Samoyeds

Post image

Hi everyone!

I have an almost 2-year-old Samoyed who's very sweet but also stubborn and reactive, especially during walks and car rides. He struggles with excessive barking, jumping, leash pulling, and getting overly excited around triggers.

I'm looking for a trainer experienced with Samoyeds or similar breeds, particularly in managing reactivity, impulse control, and overstimulation.

I'd prefer someone who uses positive reinforcement and behavior modification techniques, rather than punishment-based methods, and focuses on long-term improvement.

I'm looking for private, one-on-one sessions, either at our home or at the trainer's facility. We're based around the Sunnyvale/Mountain View/Cupertino area, but willing to travel a reasonable distance.

Has anyone worked with a trainer who helped improve these behaviors in their Samoyed? I'd really appreciate recommendations based on personal experience!

Thanks in advance!

Samoyed Breeder Recommendations in Northern CA

Hello! Looking for great Samoyed breeders that do all of the breed recommended tests. I have looked at the SCA, but the info seemed a bit out of date. Would love to find a puppy in the next few months. Thank you!

Insurance worth it ?

My Sammy is approaching 14 weeks

Debating on insurance

Curious to hear if it's worth it or not and which seems to be some good options

I had insurance for one of my dogs a long time ago and I thought it was a waste. Curious if things have improved

Update: I signed based on everyone's feedback

Thank you!

What could my dog be allergic to?

We took her to the vet. They said it’s allergies but cannot figure out what it’s from. We gave her two weeks of allergy med and she responded her. But couple weeks later. The symptoms came back. Her eyelids get brownish red with discharge. Also, she scabs around her snout. What is the best way to figure out what she is allergic to?

Why does my dog’s poop smell THIS bad?

Post image
78 Upvotes

I’ve had dogs throughout my life, but I’ve never experienced anything like this with Yuki 😂.
His poop smells insanely bad. And I don’t mean “normal dog poop smells bad” — I mean it’s on another level. If he poops inside the house, you can literally be on the second floor in another room and the smell will somehow find you within a couple of minutes. 💀
With my other dogs, they could occasionally poop inside and I wouldn’t even realize it at first because the smell wasn’t that strong. I’d usually discover it because I saw the poop.
With Yuki, there is absolutely no mystery. The smell basically announces: “YUKI HAS POOPED.” 😂
I’ve already changed his kibble several times, but it hasn’t really made a difference.
He’s otherwise acting completely normal, so I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this with their dog. Is extremely foul-smelling poop sometimes related to diet, digestion, parasites, or something else?
Any advice or things I should look into would be appreciated!

5 months with floppy ears

Post image
400 Upvotes

I wanted to share my sweet sleepy smiley boy with his floppy ears. They perk up occasionally but seem nowhere close to staying popped up. I’m not so worried that I feel inclined to tie or tape them, especially since I doubt he will leave his ears alone long enough to do so 😅 but since this seems to vary drastically amongst sammies, when did your pups ears pop up?
