Football Tide Charts: Texas A&M

Matchup summary

  Alabama Texas A&M
Model predicted score 30 23
Win probability 68% 32%
Adj. EPA/play, offense +0.20 (#12) +0.08 (#45)
Adj. EPA/play, defense allows -0.14 (#15) -0.11 (#19)
Adj. success rate, offense 46% (#15) 44% (#41)
Adj. success rate, defense allows 37% (#10) 38% (#19)
Adj. points/drive, offense 3.15 (#11) 2.84 (#27)
Adj. points/drive, defense allows 1.92 (#20) 1.98 (#23)
Kicking units, EPA/kick +0.13 (#4) +0.15 (#2)

The model has this game as Alabama -7.2. Vegas is at Bama -14.5. This is the 3rd week in a row that the model is more bearish on Alabama than Vegas, and so far the model has been on the right side of that. Make of that what you will.

This is sort of similar to Tennessee where the model is pretty bearish on A&M's offense, but thinks that the defense might give Alabama some problems. The model also rates A&M's kicking game as the #2 unit in the country and its overall special teams #1 in the country. At a high level A&M's profile is sort of a worse Tennessee. They get there differently than Tennessee, but that combined with it being a home game is why the model ends up with Alabama as a touchdown favorite.

Statistically their defense is a little better against the pass than the run, but it's not an extreme split like Tennessee's defense where it really profiles out as a coverage-focused defense. TAMU is a bit more balanced, which bodes well for Alabama in this game. The Alabama offense tends to really struggle against coverage-focused defenses, but that's not what TAMU is. They're also not a bend-but-don't-break defense. They have a really high 3-and-out rate, and they are elite at keeping opponents from reaching scoring territory.

Overall, by my model this is the 3rd-best defense Alabama will have played so far, and I think it's going to be a tougher test for Alabama than many are giving it credit for.

TAMU is a middle-of-the-road SEC offense. Much like Tennessee they're better running the ball than throwing it. Particularly from an explosiveness standpoint. They're the fifth most explosive rushing offense in the country. That gives me a bit of indigestion having watched Alabama's defense the last couple of weeks. I think the defense really needs to force this to be a Marcel Reed game. He's really struggling this year, and has been an absolute turnover machine. I would play the run aggressively, and if Reed beats you he beats you. The offense needs to help here too. Start hot and force TAMU out of their comfort zone early.

Ultimately this should be a good chance to be a get-right game for Bama, and lord knows we need it heading into the bye week and then LSU. Our defense has been good in every game, except the Tennessee game, creating havoc and generating INTs. If the offense can have any amount of success this week, Bama should win, and if they can get a lead and force TAMU to throw the ball this game could quickly snowball into a full-on rout.

Football Stadium Noise

We have got to get louder, I know our stadium’s build doesn’t help, but we are the quietest 100k plus stadium in the conference, or college period. The old timers in Tide Pride seats telling people to sit down they are too loud has to stop, they can stand up, wear ear muffs, or stay home , but you can’t tell people in a close game in the 4th your too loud, sit down, or go online and say we need to portray the fact we are winners, and that the team doesn’t need us to yell like uncivilized Tennessee fans, really?! Yes they do need us too get loud, they want us to yell, do you not remember Saban asking fans to get loud. It’s fine to not storm the field, but getting loud is necessary! I was born I the 80’s, I went to my first game in 1993, and I’ve been going ever since, my first iron bowl was 94 at legion field, it was crazy loud, but it seems like it was alot louder in the Stallings years, and then around 2002, we started to get quieter and quieter, then I left for 4 years while I was in the Marine Corps, and while I was gone they completed one end of the stadium, I got back in 2008, and it was way quieter that year than it had ever been growing up, and when the other end of the stadium was
finished in 2010 I think, it got even quieter. We’ve got to get louder, and if we can maybe prove we will be loud, maybe we can get a petition for the school to remodel the stadium in places to help amplify the noise, like the Seahawks stadium is built, I know we can’t completely build it like it’s needed to amplify it where it needs to be, but some changes could be made to help. Please let’s get louder Tide fans, I shouldn’t be able to hear UGA fans so clear on the TV, and not hear ours at BDS.

Basketball College basketball's NIL arms race: Tier 4, $12.1 million to $15 million. Alabama, which ranks near the bottom in the SEC in spending yet is consistently a top-10 or -15 squad with a budget that is comfortably outside the top 30.

Key quote: "You gotta piece it together," Alabama coach Nate Oats said on the Eye on College Basketball podcast. "You're not just looking for the best players. If you go buy the best pieces, sometimes it doesn't fit. We've done this study; we've done the best job of improving guys' draft stock. We don't have the most No. 1 picks or lottery picks -- although we've had quite a few -- but there's still a lot more money to be had in the NBA than there is in college. If you think you're an NBA player and want to play in an NBA system, we've done a better job of improving guys' draft stock than anybody in the country. We've told guys, 'If you don't think you're going to be an NBA player, you should go take the most money you can make in college. If you think you're an NBA player, you may have to take a discount.'"

Ex-#Titans DT Jordan Elliott went to his car to retrieve his gun after a practice altercation with OT JC Latham last Thursday (Oct. 15).

After being told to leave the field, Elliott took off his pads and stormed out of the facility, then went to the players' lot. Security cameras captured the sequence. Veteran DL John Franklin-Myers talked him down, and no one was hurt.

The Titans released Elliott on Tuesday after reviewing the incident. He signed a 2-year, $8M deal this offseason.

News of the incident was first reported by @eastonfreeze and additional details provided by @AaronWilson_NFL.
