Where should I buy a turkey?

This year will be my first time cooking a turkey in the US for over 15 years. I lived in Japan for a long time and it was definitely a "take what you can get" situation. We moved here in December 2023, then I had a newborn in 2024 so it was QFC premade T-day dinner. Last Thanksgiving was my 40th birthday so I refused to cook and we went to a restaurant (especially since my then-16-month-old, Chinese husband, and Chinese in-laws DGAF about Thanksgiving).

This year my parents are coming and I was originally planning to just do Costco/supermarket turkey, but I'm wondering if there are any somewhat-affordable nicer options in the area that I wouldn't have had to sign up for 6 years ago (Bob's Burgers is my only reference for such a situation)?

Any recommendations are welcome!

PSA: Please don’t stop in the middle of a roundabout unless necessary

Today on 116th in Redmond, near Einstein Elementary, a car suddenly stopped in the middle of the first roundabout. It appeared the driver was stopping to let another car enter.
I was behind the Audi, kept my distance, and was able to stop in time. The driver then remained stopped in the roundabout for about five seconds.

If you’re already in the roundabout, you generally have the right of way. Drivers entering should yield to traffic already circulating. Stopping unexpectedly in the middle of the roundabout to let someone else in is unpredictable and can create a dangerous situation, especially for the cars behind you.

Obviously, you should stop if there’s a pedestrian crossing, an obstacle, an emergency, or another legitimate reason. But randomly stopping to be ā€œpoliteā€ and let another car go defeats the purpose of a roundabout!

Why were there literally 8+ cop cars near Avondale / 90th today? Saw two teenagers near the bus stop and two more run over and meet them, in the light of two cars.

Throwing food and waste off balconies ?

What’s up with people throwing things off their balcony ? I watch an elderly woman dump a pot full of something off her 5 floor balcony to the street below from
Downtown park. I’ve also been the recipient of sweeping debris from tenants above Woodblock. Are the laws against this ? Don’t they care about the people and spaces below ? Maybe this is why there is a rat infestation I’m downtown park …

Any thoughts on the Judge Position No. 1 race?

Filling out my ballot, and I’m struggling a bit with this race (the district judge position 1 race); both candidates seem qualified and neither one seems like an obvious plant for extremists. Does anyone want to share the reasoning they used to make a choice in this race?

Edit— Sorry that I can’t edit the post title! I’m asking about the district level judge race between Jan Trasen and Bianca Tse. I figured a more local sub would be the place to ask. I’m aware of the attempt at a GOP takeover of the State Supreme Court level and voted against those candidates.

Three Redmond things worth knowing this week (Oct. 19–25)

  • Tuesday, if you want a say in the City's budget: Redmond City Council is holding a public hearing on the proposed 2027–28 budget at 7 p.m. at City Hall. You can attend in person, watch remotely, or submit comments by email.
  • Saturday and Sunday, for a fall walk: The Salmon Migration Discovery Walk runs 10 a.m.–2 p.m. along the Sammamish River Trail. It's a free, family-friendly scavenger hunt starting at City Hall, with a chance to spot migrating salmon and pick up ORCA cards or prizes while supplies last.
  • Saturday, for the Halloween crowd: The Redmond Community Center at Marymoor Village has free indoor trick-or-treating from 4:30–7:30 p.m. and a separate haunted house from 5–9 p.m. ($5–$6, recommended for ages 12+).

I put together Redmond Beat, a free weekly email with more local events and useful city updates. This week's roundup is here.

Anything else happening around Redmond this week that people should know about?

Eastside lactation consultant recs?

Hi all! Can anyone recommend a lactation consultant (IBCLC) on the Eastside who does prenatal consults and is available after birth too?

I’m in Redmond/Woodinville and expecting my first baby in a couple of months. I’ve heard it helps to meet with someone before the baby arrives, so I’d love to find a person I can see now and then reach out to once she’s here.

Ideally they:

  • Are IBCLC-certified
  • Offer a prenatal consult or breastfeeding prep session
  • Are available for follow-up after birth, ideally home visits
  • Take insurance

Eastside is ideal, and I’m open to Seattle for someone great.

Secondary question, if you have a minute: if you did a prenatal consult, did it make a difference once the baby came? Any tips on when to book or what to ask? Thanks so much!

Biang Biang Noodles is really bland

If you ever ate at Tian Fu or Tian Tian Noodles before they have closed down, their food were good in terms of flavors (spicy/mala dishes). But the new Biang Biang Noodles shop in Redmond tastes really bad. The soup is very watery/bland and the noodles have the mushy texture (this is likely due to using frozen noodles). It surprised me as their rating is so high online.

Had a visitor this morning! We're right on cottage lake creek so the bear wandered down that way maybe for some fish. Haven't had one on the camera since July. Just wanted to share my excitement.

It is amazingly wild just a few feet away from the major roads around here. 🐻 ā¤ļø

I have the answer to the frequent - what was that boom - questions. I have identified two sources, allegedly, and the physics of linear ground sound waves and atmospheric inversion sound tunnels

my first idea was these booms had to be SpaceX, but I was wrong. if you have the patience to read this technical white paper, you will see the actual sources of these booms.

Yes, this was formatted by gemini, however, that does not disqualify my scientific methods, and the surprising answers I found.

TECHNICAL WHITE PAPER: ANALYSIS OF DUAL ACOUSTIC ANOMALIES (UNION HILL / REDMOND RIDGE)

Target Subject: Identification of High-Frequency Low-Frequency Concussive Noise Events

Primary Coordinates Focus: Union Hill Valley Floor to Redmond Ridge Upland Corridor

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Residents across Union Hill and the Redmond Ridge plateau consistently record two distinct low-frequency acoustic anomalies occurring at a high operational cadence of 3 to 4 times per week. These events consist of a recurring morning event (~8:34 AM) characterized by a sharp directional bang, and a high-frequency overnight event (~2:00 AM) characterized by an omnidirectional, window-shaking concussive boom.

This white paper establishes that these events are not isolated, rare occurrences, but a systemic pattern driven by two distinct, repeating phenomena:

Event A (Morning - 3 to 4x/Week): Repeated linear ground-level acoustic propagation originating from scheduled high-voltage electrical grid operations or routine industrial shift startups along the Willows Road Corridor.

Event B (Night - 3 to 4x/Week): Cyclical refracted sound waves ("Sound Tunneling") generated by regular graveyard-shift aggregate handling or construction blasting on the Redmond Ridge Upland, amplified by overnight atmospheric temperature inversions.

  1. GEOGRAPHIC & ACOUSTIC MAPPING

The geographic area forms a triangle bounded by three high-profile industrial nodes, intersecting directly over the Union Hill residential basin.

Facility Risk Assessment

Facility / Location

Physical Operations

Acoustic Risk Realities & Frequency Analysis

SpaceX Starlink (Redmond Ridge)

Satellite assembly, cleanroom electronics, indoor vibration testing.

Excluded as primary boom source. Environmental shake tables and vacuum chambers are contained within sound-proofed bays. No open-air propulsion firings occur here.

Cadman Pit / High Rock (Ridge & North)

Heavy aggregate extraction, stone crushing, site blasting, steel-bed drop loading.

Primary Suspect (Event B - Night, 3-4x/Week). Scheduled overnight graveyard shifts (typically Mon–Thu) involve heavy material handling that continuously aligns with nighttime inversion windows.

L3Harris (Aerojet) (Willows Floor)

Spacecraft maneuvering thrusters, chemical propulsion manufacturing.

Excluded as primary boom source. Thruster test firings are strictly conducted inside vacuum cells to simulate orbital space conditions.

PSE Grid / Willows Strip (Willows Corridor)

Substation distribution, high-voltage load switching, heavy equipment start.

Primary Suspect (Event A - Morning, 3-4x/Week). Recurring morning weekday startup sequences trigger repeated electrical load transfers and automated circuit breaker switching.

  1. ATMOSPHERIC & PHYSICAL MECHANISMS

DAYTIME (8:34 AM) - Linear Ground Wave NIGHTTIME (2:00 AM) - Atmospheric Inversion ("Sound Tunnel")

[Willows Rd] -------> [Union Hill] [Redmond Ridge Source] ----> [Union Hill Basin Shockwave]

Linear Directional Bang Omnidirectional Window-Rattling Boom

Event B Physics: High-Frequency Inversion & Graveyard Shift Cadence

Recurring Thermal Stratification: Pacific Northwest clear-sky nights create ideal conditions for rapid ground cooling. Because this inversion occurs predictably multiple nights a week, any industrial noise produced during these windows is systematically trapped.

Operational Schedule Correlation: Industrial operations running 4-day graveyard schedules (Mon–Thu) create an identical acoustic footprint 3 to 4 times every week.

Topographical Ducting: The physical elevation difference (~350–400 ft) between Redmond Ridge and the Union Hill valley creates a natural acoustic wave duct. A routine drop of a heavy boulder into a steel trailer at 2:00 AM—which occurs multiple times a week—is consistently refocused into a concussive shockwave across the valley basin.

Event A Physics: Scheduled Morning Grid Load Transients

At 8:30 AM, regional industrial demand spikes predictably on workdays. The occurrence rate of 3 to 4 times a week mirrors active commercial production schedules, where automated high-voltage vacuum switches or capacitor bank energizations at Willows Road substations discharge sharp acoustic transients directly down the valley floor.

  1. INVESTIGATIVE FINDINGS & VERDICT

SpaceX and L3Harris are geographical false positives: While high-profile aerospace tenants dominate local awareness, their core operational profiles rule them out as sources for open-air shockwaves.

The 3–4x weekly frequency points to commercial/industrial schedules: Random or rare events (like accidental explosions) are ruled out by this high cadence. The weekly rhythm strongly correlates with structured industrial shift schedules and utility load management.

Two independent sources drive the recurring pattern:

Morning Noise (West / Willows): Driven by scheduled electrical grid switching (PSE) or heavy equipment startup during weekday morning shift changes.

Night Noise (North-East / Ridge): Driven by recurring graveyard-shift aggregate mining, quarry drop-loading, or construction blasting amplified by regular nighttime sound refraction.

Massive Explosions At Redmond Ridge?

It’s middle of the night here and suddenly there are these massive explosion sounds going off at semi-regular intervals. No signs of fire, no light, smoke, nothing, just the sound. Power hasn’t been messed with either so it’s not a transformer blowing. What the hell is going on?

Does anyone know the older gentleman who walks along Union Hill Road?

I’ve noticed an older gentleman with a long white beard and a large, heavy-looking backpack walking along Union Hill Road in Redmond. I’ve seen him at all different hours, including 12:30am, 1:30am, and 3:30pm. He’s always dressed pretty neatly.
Just wondering if anyone else has noticed him or knows if he might need any help. I don’t want to make assumptions, but I’ve been a little concerned seeing him walking so often, especially late at night.
Just wanted to ask out of genuine concern!
