Help Me Find a Book to Read! ๐Ÿ†˜ Why am I being judged poorly for liking popular books?

There was a post on the bookshelfdetective subreddit and they had the series Red Rising, Dungeon Crawler Carl, Dune, The Expanse, everything written by Brandon Sanderson, et al.

So I commented that those are all my favourites and people downvoted me. Is it lame to like these books? I donโ€™t understand why people roll their eyes so hard when I say I like to read popular YA fiction

I didnโ€™t read growing up and found I love it so every now and then I pick up a YA book to see what I missed out on.

Nonfiction ๐Ÿ“œ Anyone interested in small, virtual reading groups based around nonfiction?

Hey all,

I'm a big nonfic reader. I typically read books alone, but miss the days of grad seminars where we all read things together.

I'm looking for others interested in reading and discussing nonfiction books, particularly around economics, history, politics, and technology.

Two books I'd currently love to get a small reading group together for are:

  • The History of Money โ€“ David McWilliams: How money has shaped civilizations, economies, and societies throughout history.
  • Empire of AI โ€“ Karen Hao: An investigation into OpenAI, the people behind it, and the broader implications of the AI industry.

Disclaimer: I'm also working on a little project called OurNextRead, a platform I built to make small virtual book clubs easier to organize. So I'm hoping to hit two birds with one stone by trying to read some books I've had on my list with others, while hopefully eliciting some feedback on the project. Readers join groups of five people, work through books with reading checkpoints, and share reflections and questions in discussion threads. There's no need to coordinate live meetings. Everyone can read and contribute on their own schedule.

I'd love to get a pod started for either book. Or if you have any nonfiction books you've been wanting to read, i'd love to hear about them. Recently finished some fun historical books (On Venice, Rome). Happy to share more info if anyone wants to check it out. Thanks!
