Discussion Indoor Dog Potty
Hi Everyone,
I have a female Black Mouth Cur (55lbs) that is closing in on 6yrs old. I noticed the last few months she is unable to hold the potty while I am at work sometimes. She continuously uses it near the back door of the home when leaving her for working every few days. It is only pee, she has only dumped once in the last 3 yrs and that was when I left her a lot longer than I had wanted.
I was researching indoor potties and I am wondering if you have any suggestions for one? If I put pads, she uses it on pads but I'd be spending a lot of money on this. And I'd rather get a better long term solution. I have seen ads for turf driven units, which of course got me thinking.
I believe the nicer ones are https://k9-kennelstore.com/2-x-4-ultimate-potty-station-pro-potty-attendant.html?search_click=1 but wondering if there are any alternatives that are cheaper I can use before spending more money you have used.
Thank-you for your help and I included a nice picture of her. :)

Washable pads. Bonus if you can put them down in a walk in shower so you don't have to worry about leaks

I made one of these for a couple of my previous dogs who were seniors since one had a thyroid issue that made him sleep constantly, like 23 hours a day. I moved it around the living room and my balcony all the time for him. I used a heavy plastic kiddie pool and put in some sod, that's all you need. The sod will need replaced every 2 weeks or so if you go the all natural route. It was much easier to get them used to the real grass, but we also did try fake turf as well. If you want to use the fake grass then you MUST line the bottom of the pool and cut the turf to fit exactly so it doesn't wiggle around. We used the potty pads when feeling lazy and usually used a few really old ratty bath towels that were washed every single night. We also took the turf outside and hosed it down as often as possible since it didn't control the smell like actual grass does. Oh, and ALWAYS pick up any 💩 as soon as you possibly can or it will smell if you leave it sitting there for days, obviously. In my experience the real sod was much better and the dogs didn't have any issues getting used to it. It's a little more expensive since it needs replaced frequently too. Overall this DIY is a lot cheaper than the commercial options by far.

I’m not sure what kind of space you’re working with and what maintenance/cleaning you’re comfortable with, but I DIY’ed what’s more or less a dog version of a cat litter box:
A 2x4 drum spill containment platform filled with pine pellets (horse bedding), covered with artificial grass (I find tiles easiest) that have proper drainage.
Add some zeolite on top of the pellets for additional odor control, and use something like nok off to spray the turf after it’s been peed on.
It requires very little effort day-to-day, but a larger deep clean at a cadence that’s very dependent on frequency of usage. The platform isn’t cheap, but lasts forever. Pine pellets are cheap if you get horse bedding — the same stuff goes for 2-3x as much when marketed for rabbits or cats.
I tried a lot of different solutions before I got this idea, and this has been working great for almost a year now.

If you have the space; a kiddy pool with soil & a grow light, or large boot tray with soil & grass seed & grow light
