DISCUSSION π§π€ Are these rats happy? Iβm assuming they are since they keep coming back.
v.redd.itOverview on a new friend - thank you u/Drakmanka

To answer your primary question: Yes, rats are very social animals. While they technically can be kept solo, they do not do as well emotionally when kept alone. They will get very lonely when you are away; this is stressful for them and ultimately will shorten your little baby's lifespan.
Here's a few other tips and tidbits that people new to pet rats often appreciate. Warning, long-winded post, but it's all good stuff!
List:
- Rats love to chew. If you haven't already, get her some wooden and/or cardboard things to chew on. She will trash them; that's just part of having a pet rat.
- Rats' feet are very delicate and sensitive. If her cage has wire ramps or platforms, either replace them or cover them with fabric (yes, she will chew on that fabric) to protect her feet. The wire mesh will irritate her delicate little feet and she can get a nasty infection called Bumblefoot that is very painful and difficult to cure.
- Rats aren't just omnivorous, they are the definite article of an omnivore! I like to say of rats: "Anything you can eat, we can eat better! We can eat anything better than you!" That said, they need a balanced diet. The Oxbow brand rat food is the absolute best packaged rat food available. For a rat as young as your girl, I recommend starting with their "mouse and young rat" diet and then switching her to the adult formula after a month or so. But! Supplement her diet with other foods: seeds, nuts, vegetables (but I recommend avoiding nightshades like tomatoes and bell pepers; there's been some research that suggests they may not be very good for a rat's long-term health if they eat too much of them), yogurt (it makes a great treat for training, too!), meat, and, sparingly, sweets can also be given. While your baby girl is growing, letting her eat all she wants is best. But most rats tend to start to become... ahem... round if allowed to eat all they want once they're done growing. There's a lot of differing advice on how to limit a rat's food intake to keep them from getting too plump, and I recommend you try different methods until you find one that works for your girl.
- Rats have very delicate respiratory systems. Respiratory infections are the single most common health problem in rats, and especially since your girl came from a feeder bin from a pet store and you don't know what conditions she was kept in before the pet store got her and from them to you, it's something you should be on the lookout for. Excessive sneezing, wheezing, a red discharge from her nose, mouth, or eyes, and lethargy are all symptoms of a respiratory infection. You can take her to a veterinarian who can get her antibiotics that will clear it up, but be warned that once a rat gets an infection their risk of later infection is forever raised. Keeping her cage clean is the #1 way to prevent this, however! Also, keeping her in a true cage and not an aquarium will help too as she will get more air movement. Some pet stores sell aquariums as "rat habitats" with a mesh lid but they really aren't ideal unfortunately.
- She will pee on everything you let her touch, including you. While some rats are more apt to whizz all over you than others, all rats will leave periodic drops of urine as they go about their business as a scent marking method. It's also a rat's way of "claiming" a person, sort of like a cat rubbing against you (except it's pee instead of soft fluff).
- Girl rats generally tend to be very energetic and bouncy, especially when young. Keep a close eye on her and don't let her out of your sight or she will get up to mischief. This applies for boys, too, but girls happen to be the more energetic of the two sexes.
- Rats are pocket-puppies! Your girl might be a little skittish at first because she's new to you and didn't come from the best circumstances to start with. But if you're patient, kind, and speak with a gentle tone to her, in time she will become your own little pocket-puppy who will rush to the front of the cage to greet you (and ask for snacks) each day!
I could go on but I don't want to overwhelm you too much. If you have more questions or would like to chat with people, I recommend you check out r/RATS as it's a more active subreddit than this one.
Welcome to the wonderful world of rats!

HELP NEEDED ππ© What variety is he?
Iβm in the uk so I will be using uk terms! He is almost the same shade as my blue point Siamese but a little lighter, I had initially labelled him a blue point Himilayan but question it now that he is 14 weeks and has yet to develop points.
Could he be Russian buff? He does have heathering but I considered him too warm for Russian buff, and he doesnβt meet the criteria for ivory

HELP NEEDED ππ© Rats with uri doesnβt seem to be clearing up
Hey all, I got three rats about a month ago. When I got them the previous owners had hay in their cage and a bunch of other stuff that wasnβt good for them $2k+ in vet visits and a revamp of their cage later they mostly seem to be doing better. We use liners on the cage instead of bedding, we frequently clean, we have an air purifier. However the one rat is still randomly coughing/heaving? Itβs not excessive but Iβm not sure why it hasnβt stopped, they got antibiotics and everything from the vet and weβre going in again on Thursday to check up on them again but is there something weβre missing in preventing this from happening?

HELP NEEDED ππ© Suddenly Fighting?
i have 2 adult boys and 2 that are roughly 6 weeks old. they have lived to feather for the last 2 weeks without any issues or fights up until today. iβve had to seperate one of my younger boys to treat a URI and suddenly the two older rats have started bullying the one younger one still with them. can anyone tell me why they might have started bullying him now that one has been removed or how i can resolve the issue?
(iβve noticed itβs mostly my dominant older male causing the issue and the other is sort of joining in so i am considering desexing him but heβs never bullied like this previously?)

i need some rat advice!
I posted a couple days ago asking for advice though it didn't really get anywhere as i cant post in the Rat communities (my account is to new and one just completely didn't help at all but ill try again!)
i have 2 wonderful female rats Almost 2 months (23rd i wanna say?) they're both Rex rats, i don't think having rats of different types in a cage is bad? (Lmk if i'm wrong) recently i found a post of someone re-homing rats, there was about 20(?) babies, i asked about the female ones and as soon as i saw two of their Russian blue dumbo rats i knew i needed them, they said all the rats are 35 each, not including 40 dollar shipping so in total 110, which isnt bad but i spent 15 each on my lovely ladies but i told her i'll get back to her but the main thing i need advice on is How do i introduce rats? My rats are almost if not two months already and the Blue dumbo rats are i wanna say 5 weeks, 6 at most i heard some people say bad things about introducing their rats and i am more then willing to get another cage for the two, I have a cage for them to be in until i can introduce them, its temporary its Full cheeks hamster cage its fairly big and i saw Good things about it but not sure wondering if someone can give me advice
HELP NEEDED ππ© Last ditch attempt at contact info
I'm looking to adopt 2 or 3 Dumbo dwarf werewolf males in November-December to restart my dwindling mischief. We have closed on a home in Saginaw with a dedicated ratproof room for them to occupy and enjoy. I communicated in June with a breeder on Reddit and put down a $30 deposit to get on her list, and in all the confusion of getting ready to move I lost her contact information. π’ I realize this is a long shot, but if you're that breeder, please message me. Thank you all for your support!

HELP NEEDED ππ© Looking for the best cages in the UK!
Hi, everyone! Iβm a first time rat owner in the UK and Iβd like some help finding a good cage with the proper bar spacing, and a lock on the door for my boys!
Currently, theyβre in a cage that is just big enough for two male rats, but Iβd love to give them more space as soon as possible, and so I come to all of you for help!
What are some good options on a budget? Everything I have seen that looks perfect has bars that are too wide, or no door lock. The door having no lock makes me genuinely anxious because I donβt like the idea of my boys getting out and hurting themselves while Iβm not in the room or sleeping.
My budget would be around Β£120, currently. I may be able to give or take a little. Thank you for your help!

HELP NEEDED ππ© Rat eye turned white
galleryMy rat usually has 2 vividly bright red eyes whatsoever I woke up today and noticed that her eye turne out of the sudden completely white.
Few days before I noticed something on this now white eye but due to the fact that it was the same size and color as the other eye I thought I was just imagining something.
Now I am not exactly sure what it is or if it hurts her.
Also Is she completely blind or is it gonna vanish in time ?
If your rat also had something like this, fell free to tell me about your experience!!
Please :(

HELP NEEDED ππ© My rat that acts like a cat is grieving, and I need help.
Recently 1 of our 4 girls has passed, Her name was Doggy. She and her sister Sprout were the first two in our current mischief, they were with their mother up until about two days before we got them (Their mom was sold along with their other sibling, they only had eachother when we had been fully prepared to purchase them, I wanted to adopt their mom and other sibling too but they had already been sold prior.) Doggy and Sprout were very close from the start. They were about 2 months old when we got them, we later on added two new girls, Stickabug and Noddy, also siblings, also super close, and added a bit more energy in the cage for doggy and sprout. Stickabug and noddy were turning two months old within the same week we got them, weβve had this bunch for a little over two years now.
It seems to be about that time unfortunately, and doggy had said her last goodbye October 9th 2026. My partner had made sure to allow the other girls to properly process the passing of their sister, both in the cage and during the free roam after, sprout stayed by my partners side of while she played doggy to rest (we make them their own boxes, almost like a coffin.) and sprout even allowed them to pet her (sheβs not the biggest fan of touch, reminds us of a cat a lot) but recently itβs been a little rough for her.
She is clearly grieving, her behavior has changed, thankfully sheβs still eating, but just looking at her you can tell. We want to show her the most support we can, we are not at a place to get a new 4th rat, itβs too soon and we want this to be our last mischief for a while. The other girls seem to be doing as per usual, they cuddle sprout a bit more. Sprout understands what happened as much as we do, and she feels the same emotional pain. I wish I could give her some kind of rat therapy. my poor girl.
does anyone have any advice for a grieving rat who doesnβt like being touched? she enjoys treats but theyre not a really βspecial thingβ for her, they get treats while free roaming and we give them their own rat safe versions of our dinners sometimes. Ive had two mischiefs prior and havenβt had a situation like this. π any help is lovely, thank u for reading Reddit strangers.
