Prelaunch user study for a sound walk through the layers beneath Zürich’s streets (testing before launch, 10 minutes, anywhere)
Sound walks have a history. In the 1970s R. Murray Schafer’s World Soundscape Project and Hildegard Westerkamp’s soundwalking asked people to walk through a place and listen to it closely. Psychogeography, from Guy Debord and the Situationists, asks how a city’s physical layout shapes the way people move through it and feel in it. Both start from the part of a city you can see and hear from the street.
Hidden Infrastructures Zürich is a sound walk for the part you can’t. It turns six layers of infrastructure under the streets of Zürich’s old town into sound: tram power, water, sewage, the electricity grid, telecoms and district heating. The positions come from the City of Zürich’s open data. The sound is generated live, with no recordings. The app works out your position and the direction you are facing, so the closer you are to a system, the louder it gets, and each sound comes from the direction of its source.
I’m testing it before its public launch and I’d like to hear how it worked for you and what it was like to walk with it.
You don’t need to be in Zürich. In the city, you can walk with it in real time. Anywhere else, a button in the app starts a simulated walk around downtown Zürich.
What you’d do: open the app on your phone or computer, try two short tasks (start a walk, use the faders), explore it freely, then answer a form. The form takes under 10 minutes.
Listening: headphones or your device’s speaker both work. It’s designed for bone conduction headphones, or earbuds with listen-through switched on, so the sounds sit alongside the real sounds of the street.
Privacy: your location is processed on your device and not sent anywhere. There are no accounts and no analytics. The form doesn’t ask for your name, email or location, and the accessibility questions are optional.
I want honest feedback, including what didn’t work.
