BigLaw Attorney - AMA

• Upvotes

I sat in my office yesterday when the realization hit. I had accomplished what took me a decade of planning.

I remember high school and college like it was yesterday. I obsessed over law-related internships and took two years off to work and study for the LSAT. I hated that damn test. But today I reflect back and thank 17-year-old me for his persistence and optimism.

I started my job as a corporate lawyer at a top firm this week. I’d be happy to answer any questions you all have. My number one piece of advice: discipline is the key.

How do lawyers balance it all?

I’m genuinely curious if lawyers have time to live their lives still? Do they even have time for family and hobbies? Whats the deal there?

Doctor to Lawyer

Hi, I’m currently a resident physician. Long story short, I realized I want to be a lawyer for medical malpractice. I’m unsure about how I can start this process, and if someone in a similar situation had left residency to be a lawyer.

Psychology Minor for Law School

I am a Political Science major who wants to attend law school. I was thinking about minoring in psychology; is that a good idea? I already have 2 classes completed as a freshman, so I only need 4 more classes. Will this minor be beneficial for law school?

Internship

Hello everyone! I’m a third year undergrad majoring in sociology— with a concentration of law and society. I really need some tips on getting a law internship as an undergraduate…. So far all the internships I’ve applied to have been rejected. Most of them require 1-2 years of law school, and I don’t have that experience yet. I really want to expand my knowledge and experiences— but I’m just struggling to find internships throughout the years 🥲🥲. I feel like I’ve made no progress whatsoever or I’m falling behind.

Making up for a Low/Average GPA - Any advice?

I have been going through my undergraduate journey so far, and I have not had the best GPA. It's not awful, by any means, as I'm at a 3.6. But I've had two semesters where my GPA has been impacted by medical and mental health reasons. I'm hoping that I can get it up to a 3.7 or 3.8 by the time I graduate, but if not, does anyone have any advice for making up for a lower GPA in preparation for law school applications?

I also had a completely different major before, and a completely different career pathway, so my path so far in undergrad is anything but linear.

Some advice on application process

Hello, I'm applying this year with the goal of being enrolled in law school in the fall of 2027. I have a 3.88 GPA in a math-heavy economics bachelor of science and a 164 LSAT. I'm not dead set on big law at all because I prioritize a work-life balance or any particular kind of law, although I'm leaning towards consumer protection or real estate. I was considering applying to Suffolk's early decision program to get the full ride attached to it and because Boston is a top destination for me, but it's a safety school for me, and I was wondering if I would risk getting a similar offer at a somewhat better-ranked school. I'm hoping to minimize loans due to the predatory nature of grad school loans. My question is, would it be worth it to just apply early decision and risk losing an offer at a better school (my top choice personally would be Northeastern), or does the full ride outweigh the lower ranking? Any advice is appreciated!

Is law school impossible to get in?

I know this question might sound silly but I’m genuinely curious. Is it doable? Do pre law students even get to live their lives still?

Is law worth it?

Hi! I recently got an offer into an LLB program at uni, among other degrees. Ive been looking to change my degree from media because i find it so boring and unchallenging.

But im scared to commit because of how difficult people say it is, mostly because of how much reading there is. I dont mind reading but i get bored really fast and am not the fastest (probably because i dont read that much anymore lol).

However, Ive also been looking online and saw that law is ranked as difficult, but not the most difficult (under certain engineering degrees, architecture, med, etc.) which kind of subverted my expectations, because i was always under the impression that med was hardest and law came 2nd, and its making me feel weirdly confident.

Overall, i like writing, logical thinking, problem solving, and got a 85 ATAR, but am wary about the reading and the work life balance (as i really value my free time). Please share your experience, and your thoughts

Pre-law majors: Is it worth choosing an easier major over political science? What do you wish you had majored in?

I’m currently a senior in high school planning to attend law school, and I’m trying to choose an undergraduate major. I’ve heard that your major matters less for admissions than your GPA, so I’m considering communications, political science, English, history, or another field I genuinely enjoy.
I’m especially interested in communications because it seems like it could build useful skills for law, but I’m unsure what the coursework and career options are like outside of law school.
For current law students, practicing lawyers, and recent graduates:
● What did you major in, and would you choose it again?
● Is choosing a less difficult major to protect your GPA a good strategy, or is there value in studying political science or another law-related field?
● If you studied communications, did you find it useful for law school or your career?
● What major or skills would you recommend for someone interested in corporate law?
● What do you wish you had known before choosing your undergraduate major?
I’m hoping to balance enjoying my studies, maintaining a competitive GPA, and developing useful skills for law school and beyond. I’d appreciate any honest advice!
Thank you!

Advice for internships/extracurriculars

I am really interested in doing criminal law in the future, so I was wondering what kind of internships I should look for besides just my DAs office (I already did that). Also, what kind of extracurriculars would be good.

Kinda looking ahead, but if I’m not gonna be a KJD, what are some good jobs that I could do after undergrad before law school related to this. For context I am a business admin and poli sci major considering a minor in criminal justice.

Transgender Resources/Mentorship?

Hi All!

Wondering if there are any resources/mentorship opportunities out there for trans students wanting to apply to law school? I am 24 (and trans) and unfortunately do not have a lot of family/friends who practice law and am feeling somewhat overwhelmed with all the decision making/superfluous information available out there. I would really love to connect with another trans/LGBTQ person to pick their brain about the process/taking the LSAT. I did reach out to a couple legal trans advocacy groups to see if they have any lawyers willing to mentor, but that's not exactly the purpose of those organizations so I'm not sure I'lll have luck there.

Appreciate any info/clarification you all can provide!

Should I attend law school?

I’m currently a junior at UCLA majoring in public health. UCLA offers a dual degree (J.D/MPH 4 years in total), and I have been thinking about this for the past couple of months. I always planned to get an MPH but I feel that combining the two would be great although I need to do more research. My sister is a 2L at Loyola Law and keeps telling to that law school isn’t an easy feat and I should be 1000% sure and prepared. What do you guys think? Also, getting into UCLA law would be quite difficult. Thoughts??

Advice for someone interested in human rights/civil rights law?

Hello! I'm currently a senior in high school and planning to pursue a pre-law track in college. I'm particularly interested in human rights and civil rights law, especially the international side of things. Right now, I'm considering majoring in political science or international relations.

I'd love to hear from current law students or people working in these fields about what I should focus on during undergrad. Are there any majors you'd recommend over others, or specific things you did in college that helped prepare you for law school?

I'm also curious about the career side of things. Is human rights law a realistic and sustainable career path after law school? What are the job prospects like, and is there anything you wish you'd known before going into this field?

I'd really appreciate any advice, personal experiences, or insight into what this path actually looks like. Thanks!
