Splitting hairs...

Post image
5 Upvotes

I'm new to precision rimfire. Background in center fire and hand load, so I collect a lot of numbers before dialing in.

Gear is RimX with a 20" 15T benchmark barrel

Learning a few things.

  1. The barrel tuner makes a difference. Repeatable and reproducible. Seems dependent on the barrel and less dependent on the ammo.
  2. These were all shot at 100 yards. Is this ~1MOA reasonable?
  3. For PRS22 and NRL22, do you zero at 50 or zero at 100?
  4. Anyone try the Biatholon stuff from Eley? Heard it might be better for colder weather.
  5. Lubrication types don't like mixing. When I switch from one brand to the next with different lube without cleaning the barrel, the groups open up. I always clean the carbon ring as soon as it looks dirty but if I dont clean the barrel with a nylon brush and cleaning solution, I can really notice it in the groups.
  6. Thumb support? Yea or nay?
  7. I have an armageddon shmedium for a front bag rest, any ideas what a light "big bag" I can use as well?

Any guidance and experience would be helpful.

Caveat, I have tried to should 30-50 fouling rounds between switching ammo brands, its just not the same as cleaning the barrel.

Best Performance Yesterday

I shot really well at our weekly Thu afternoon match. 14 targets (all steel, 65 - 418 yds, sizes range from ~1.6 mr - 0.2 mr). First round hits on 12 targets (best for me so far), 2nd round hits on two. First round hits score higher than 2nd or 3rd. Target 5 is a 6-target KYL @ 122 yds from 2½ down to ½" - cleaned that! Wind was fairly light at 3 mph or so.

Wanted to add some rear weight to my cz457 in a grey birch chassis. Filled the grip with epoxy and lead shot and custom cut and filled a block of copper to fit in the stock. I want to find someone to engrave the copper.

How do I go about finding a lot?

I’m back with my LH Cz varmint. Was able to test two different loads, this time SK rifle match and Lapua Pistol King. Still the same poor mans set up (no bipod, tube sock filled with rice). The Lapua Pistol King did very well. My problem is that I got the last box my local Scheels had and they have not restocked it since. Four 10 shot groups basically all looked like this. So how do I find it?

New lot Lap LR is great

Just took the rifle out to test the new lot of Lapua Long Range and see if tuner adjust was necessary. Small adjustment resulted in 100 yd 10-shot group less than 0.15v x 0.1h mrad. I'm pleased with that. Tested a new lot of SK LRM with a result of less than 0.2v x 0.15h mrad (100 yds). That is better than the previous lot, so now I have a good bunch of ammo to shoot that has the capability of winning every match I shoot if my wind calling is good enough.

New to the Reddit posting, trying to earn my keep in some of the other subs… any feed back is appreciated!

Looking for next step investments for my CZ 457 LH Varmint!

These were shot at 50yards in a slightly breezing rainy day over two hours off the pictured set up! These CZ is a shooter and I’m very pleased with it! First bolt gun!

New chassis options

Hello all this is my wifes cz457 pro varmint currently. We are looking for a better chassis to shoot some matches with. The grey birch is nice but has to much forend flex. When she sets it down on a bag and is not super careful the barrel and chassis smack together. Im looking at mdt mostly but open to other opinions.

17HMR Ammo Quiver

Is anyone aware of a good Mlok/pic rail ammo quiver for small rimfire rounds (specifically 17HMR)? I am having trouble finding one that can be shipped to the US.

The CCI Lottery

I’m far too cheap to properly get into precision rimfire with large volumes of Lapua or Eley but I do enjoy playing the CCI lottery.

Two sets of groups showing how varied they can be between batches. E07GA06 in blue and A31GA07 in green.

I’ve come to expect an “average” batch of CCI SV to put most in the same hole with 3 fliers or so. These two seem to be on opposite ends of the CCI spectrum with one looking like birdshot and the other looking pretty good with only one or two fliers.
