Hi all!
As some of you might've noticed, we've recently tweaked the subreddit rules a bit. We highly recommend you read this to get a good idea of how things will be handled here going forward.
First of all, all music posts now require some form of additional commentary or context. This can be in the form of opinions about the song, memories associated with it, experiences seeing it performed live, trivia, etc. as long as is encourages discussion. This rule has been in place for a little while now, but we've recently adjusted how we'll be enforcing this. We request that users here include this somewhere on their posts, whether it be in the title, body text, or as a comment on one's own post.
Second, please do not post excessively, and keep to a maximum of three posts per person per day. This helps prevent the sub from being excessively flooded or spammed by a single user.
To cap things off, we've been getting a number of messages via Modmail regarding users having difficulty posting. This is due to an anti-spam filter set up via AutoMod that requires posts from new accounts to be manually reviewed. Don't panic if this happens to you! It doesn't necessarily mean that your post has broken a rule, and the moderators here will have a look at it as soon as we can, although it may take a few hours.
If you run into this issue repeatedly, please contact the moderators via Modmail and we'll help you out. We do try our best to approve users whenever possible.

I love the atmospheric and melancholic sound of this album. Some standout songs are Don’t Fall, Monkeyland, Up the Down Escalator, and Thursdays Child

I know the sound get their flowers in the post-punk fan world, but I wonder if there are any fans out there that feel them on the level I do. I get a feeling from them that I absolutely cannot explain. Something so potent, so beautiful, so honest, so painful and so therapeutic. All together with the great rhythm section and Adrian's amazing voice and great guitar playing just form a sound that has made me addicted. I have never felt or enjoyed to a level music that I do The Sound which is why I would consider them my favourite band and in my opinion one of the greatest bands of all time. Anyone else just gobsmacked at how they make us feel like nothing else does?

Apologies for the wordiness,
I've figured out that my general taste in music hovers somewhere in the post-punk, darkwave, coldwave, etc. spaces, but unfortunately I have found algorithms rather unhelpful in guiding me to more of what I like. There have been successes here and there, but I want to get closer to the core of the genre/subculture since there are certain types of sounds that I strongly recognise myself in. I've also ran into more than a few pleasant songs that turned out to just have bought or taken the melody from some sort of generic post-punk pack, which puts a somewhat bad taste in my mouth.
Now, the sound characteristics include something like:
- Softer, more whispery or sensual vocals. I can accept a bit of the low droning (maybe not the same genre but I'm fond of Rendez Vous and their more typically punky, harsh, oddly British delivery. And also obligatory Depeche Mode I guess) but what I really like is the contrast between the softer vocals and the droning instrumentals. It tickles my brain right.
- Drone-y basslines. The kind that just feels like a consistent dark pulse throughout the song.
- Dreamy, detached, effect-laden leads leaning more into shoegaze (heavy chorus/delay/flanger/etc) territory
- Synths (optional but nice)
One band I found that I do like a lot is Past Self, specifically tracks like Mudang, 녹슨 칼 (Rusty Knife), Jemul, etc.) and they seem to have what I'm looking for. I just want to see if there's any bands considered somewhat more classic and influential that I'm missing. I know of the influences that the band above mentioned (Slowdive, Molchat Doma, My Bloody Valentine, etc.) but they're all separated and I wanted to see if there's other places they might have converged.
Others that kind of fit the criteria but not as strictly, just to give more info: House of Harm - Isolator / Control / Vicious Pasttimes and others; The Freaks - Smoking Kills; We Cults - watch the sky; a lot of stuff by This Eternal Decay, etc.
Thank you.

IS THIS THE FALL ANTHEM WE NEED RIGHT NOW?
It’s been over two years since the inception of this song and I can finally unleash my new single, “Promethean” to the world. As an emerging artist, this particular song is the one I am most proud of. The lyrics convey transcending hopeless feelings in moments of crisis and the endurance of the human spirit.
I hope this song reaches the hearts of as many listeners in this community as possible. It is available to stream on all music platforms and for purchase on iTunes and Amazon Music. This release is preceding my debut album, “Black Light Abyss” coming soon.
Follow Chaotic Distance on TikTok and Instagram for more updates and music coming soon!

PLEASE give this a listen if all you know from Soft Cell is Tainted Love.
I listened to this album because Trent Reznor said it was an influence on him making darker synth music that was still catchy.

Their first album, and still a shock: drills, hammers and sheet metal as instruments, Bargeld, Unruh and F.M. Einheit as a trio, out on ZickZack. There’s even a Gainsbourg cover hiding in there (“Jet’m”).
For people who love them, was it this one that got you, or a later record? And what would you hand someone hearing them for the first time?
