Words cannot describe the absolute stupidity of TX GOP primary voters for kicking out Cornyn in favor of Paxton.

•

u/AngriestManinWestTX 5h ago

Hey, I'll have you know that Cornyn broke from Trump ~3% of the time! That is categorically unacceptable! Anything less than complete 100% devotion to Trump cannot be tolerated!!!!

major, major /s if that isn't apparent.

•

u/BKlounge93 5h ago

Which is exactly why it was so dumb lmao. You’d get the same result without all the baggage.

•

u/killersky99 4h ago

you let one republican have one independent thought and pretty soon rest of them will start using their brain to think

•

u/kaflarlalar 4h ago

No they won't.

•

u/TheBoNix 3h ago

Look what happened to MTG

•

u/maddieterrier Tennessee 3h ago

I think she's a Qanon true believer. The Epstein files broke her from the fold.

I believe that too. Still a dingle berry, but a dingle berry that has a line drawn.

Nah she broke with Qanon too, still a genuine idiot and shitheel opportunist though.

•

u/Shark7996 1h ago

She's very gullible but she also spends a lot of time behind the curtain. I think she has a mixture of conspiracies she believes and conspiracies she sells, but that's a distinction without a difference to me. Stupid and evil is a dangerous combination.

u/AndroidAtWork 3h ago edited 2h ago

You think she decided to start thinking for herself? Fuck no.

She was a true believer in Trump. She parroted all of the crazy shit he said, and went a few steps further on her own. She was a standard bearer for all of it. As a true believer, she thought she'd be rewarded when the time came. Maybe she'd get some nice top committee spots or some sort of cabinet level position. But none of that materialized. Other members of the freedom caucus got nice title bumps but she did not. She got nothing for selling herself out completely.

It had nothing to do with Epstein. Epstein was her opportunity to clap back, and she took it. And then when Donnie went against her, she was iced out by the rest of the freedom caucus. None of them supported her when she was getting heat from Trump and all of his media goons. She didn't suddenly develop a conscience. It had everything to do with being scorned.

•

u/PoopyButt28000 1h ago

The biggest thing that started it was Trump supporting Israel. She's incredibly fucking antisemitic she's literally the "Jewish space lasers" woman who compared mask mandates to the holocaust. She broke because he was too friendly with Israel, which she was against because they are Jews not because she objects to muslims dying, and then he Trump responded by personally attacking her which made her completely go against him.

•

u/TheBoNix 2h ago

Dude, I'm not disagreeing with you. Don't worry, you don't need to convince me of anything.

→ More replies (1)

•

u/PoopyButt28000 1h ago

MTG said that California forest fires were intentionally started by Jews. She chased down and screamed at school shooting survivors. She compared mask mandates to Jews being thrown into gas chambers during the holocaust. She was a QAnon supporter who liked posts on Facebook calling for Obama, Clinton, and Pelosi to be shot in the head.

The main thing that made the insanely antisemitic MTG break from Trump was his support of Israel. Then he responded by personally attacking her, so she turned on the Republicans. This attempt to sane wash MTG or even act like her breaking from the Republicans was from a sane well reasoned place is so obnoxious.

•

u/RunnTheJuuls 1h ago

True that, PoopyButt28000

•

u/AngriestManinWestTX 3h ago

Yup.

If Cornyn was running then he'd have a five point lead over Talarico. It'd still be a closer race than Republicans are used to in Texas but the end result would be a 70%+ chance of a Republican victory instead of a 50-50 at best.

•

u/westivus_ 20m ago

Kalshi has it at 60/40 in favor of Talarico.

•

u/FrankCDean 2h ago

It was a Russian/Elon bot campaign to get Paxton nominated. Cornyn supported Ukraine and that made him a target for the Russian/Muskrat bot farms. Had Ukraine took out that data center during the primary, we'd have been looking at a very different election in Texas.

•

u/Infinite-Group-4520 1h ago

Why "/s"? That's literally the reason.

•

u/Turbulent_Gazelle530 1h ago

because Trump's power is largely an illusion, there is zero room for anyone to "break" from him. they simply can't allow it lest the illusion is shattered and the whole thing falls apart.

Such a self-own. If Abbott holds the Governorship they're going to really regret that decision.

If Abbott loses then well the Blue Wave was probably too big for Conryn anyway.

•

u/HuMcK 4h ago

If Abbott loses, it will at least in part be Paxton's fault for dragging the whole ticket down, and Talarico for getting people to the polls with his coattails.

•

u/williamfbuckwheat 3h ago

I don't seem to recall Abbott ever being exactly popular like at all. He just would win easily by default because he lacked a serious opponent and people would just vote for any R candidate. I also think the push to ban THC products out of nowhere in an election year really made him vulnerable and just showed how arrogant and tone deaf the Texas GOP had become towards anyone who wasnt a diehard conservative or right wing evangelical type. Usually, the GOP tries to avoid effectively outlawing industries bringing in billions of dollars as the supposed "pro business" party regardless of the moral arguments but they just threw that out the window in this case.

•

u/canman7373 1h ago

Nag, no win means state flipped. Just means folks won't come out for a clown like Paxton, I mean his own party impeached him and his staffers reported him to the FBI. He is a horrible man, they may not vote dem, but may just stay home.

•

u/Kolby_Jack33 1h ago

I didn't directly ask my Texan republican parents who they were voting for (or if they were voting at all) but when my dad mentioned an old politician whose political career was torpedoed by his infidelity, I said "wow, remember when infidelity torpedoed political careers" more as a sly diss of Trump, but he immediately brought up Paxton's sham marriage of his own accord and did not sound like he was happy with the guy.

Which of course could just mean they'll hold their noses while they vote for him anyway but I dunno. It's more than he's ever said about Trump's character.

Is there a chance Abbott loses his election? Would love to see that happen but I doubt the odds are high if I haven't heard much about it.

•

u/NeverSober1900 2h ago

Punchers chance I'd say. Nate Silver's model has Abbot up by about 2 points. Stronger than expected turnout from the Dems or Paxton stink could flip it. But in general Abbott is probably like 85% to keep the seat.

I know some left leaning folks in Texas who did the wise thing and just voted for Paxton to help the democrat chances.

Stuff like this should be commonplace. I voted for Nikki Haley for example versus Donald Trump. I REALLY wish more would have done the same.

•

But that becomes a double edge sword if it inadvertently gets someone more batshit insane closer to the seat

I'm not yet fifty, but am a retired soldier and have spent many years traveling the world. Both of my grandfathers and one of my grandmothers were American soldiers in WW2, and the questions that haunted me since childhood are those of the motives and causal factors that gave rise to the greatest war the world had ever seen. You can probably imagine what my bookshelf looks like, yet I stand here, no less shocked than you.

•

u/PureButton4670 3h ago

Every Republican is the same, they all vote for everything DJT wants anyway so there literally is no difference.

•

They shift the Overton window and affect public discourse outside of them voting the same as the “respectable” Republican option. That matters in the grand scheme of the political environment

I usually.do that kind of thing, but I couldn't stomach voting for Paxton, even just in a primary, because I thought, "if he goes on to win the sear I'm going to hate myself."

Talarico vs Crockett brought me back to my party's primary for the 1st time ever.  I'd always used primaries to vote against the most repulsive republicans.

u/randomnighmare I voted 3h ago

I 100% believed it was because Trump got involved. Like, if he didn't backed/endorsed Paxton, Cornyn would've surely won the primary, but here we are in this timeline. Although the race is still close (according to the polling) and everything is "within the margin of error," it's still a toss-up, but a lot in the media (and in politics) are noting what is happening in Texas.

For a while I thought he was an ok GOP president, the best they had since Eisenhower. Then I am reminded that he covered up Iran Contra by pardoning key figures in pending trials on the behest of Bill fucking Barr. Then lied that the justification was they were targeted over politics over the truth that they committed crimes. He is corrupt and evil as the rest of the Republicans.

•

u/f-150Coyotev8 28m ago

This is what pisses me off about the current administration. They make us miss presidents like bush jr/sr. Both were war criminals and seriously set our country back.

This current administration, however, has completely destroyed the norms we had.

The small positive (hopefully) is that now it’s clear how corrupt politics in America are. Both parties, including the media, are making money off of the absurdity of our current president. They are an instrument of the rich and only the rich.

I just hope that the younger generations that are starting to run for office start to change things.

Eh by current day Republican standards the dudes a saint.

He regularly called out Reagan on his shit with trickle down voodoo ass economics.

And when the country was in a recession under his watch he did the smart thing and raised taxes on those who could afford it. Despite getting his political arm twisted into the "no new taxes" promise.

He also did the ADA. And empowered the EPA a bit.

Allegedly he also tried to talk W down from his most stupid choices in offices but Cheney outplayed him.

Not a great man, but by Republican standards of this century he was.

•

u/asminaut California 3h ago

Mostly because there isn't a party for his brand of fiscal conservative any longer. No, not even the Democrats, they're just closer in terms of the non-economic values. H.W. was among the last Republicans who'd still have been at home in Lincoln's Republican party.

But Iran-Contra continued through Reagan into Bush Sr.'s presidency, and by not releasing certain things he effectively killed the investigation

of the scandal. On Christmas Eve in 1992, shortly after losing his reelection bid, President George H.W. Bush pardoned six major administration officials (including former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger) just as their trials were set to begin, effectively halting the remaining legal investigations.

Pretty tame in comparison to current politics but still

Also, based on Reddit's craziness there has never been a President that can be classified as good. In fact, I doubt any national leader would qualified as good according to reddit.

And, I'm not a republican trying to defend Bush. I'm saying Reddit is crazy

•

If the Nuremberg laws were applied, then every post-war American president would have been hanged

And why is it wrong to scrutinize a leader of a country? Surely we should carefully inspect every action of a nation's leader, shouldn't we?

•

Exactly this. I used to be "independent" but went more Republican than Democrat -- at least at the state and local levels. That started changing about 2010 and by 2016, I was pretty much voting only Democrats, with a few exceptions. Since 2020, I haven't voted for a single Republican.

My beliefs and views haven't changed. The party that I thought was closer to my beliefs just went that much farther right.

•

u/GreatDoink 1h ago

Amen. And when the party decided to just bow to Trump that's when I knew there isn't any way for me to come back from that.

Not out governor, not our states senators, not most the reps, not local politicians, and not anyone associated with Donald Trump. Straight up voting mostly. Hope it's not an outlier.

It's personally true. Dad was a republican, now is a dem because the GOP went crazy.

•

u/jdc90403 5h ago

I think both her and Jenna are dems but Barbara has been more open about it

•

u/GotMoFans 5h ago

Barbara is the one I’d suspect was secretly a Democrat… like her mama.

•

u/SouthIsland48 4h ago

Barbara is 100% a democrat. A few decades ago that was called centrist independent, now that is democrat

•

u/AnimalShithouse 1h ago

We need more parties and some kind of mixed proportional representation system. It's so ridiculous to try to reduce people into being either a democrat or a republican.

•

u/postwhateverness 4h ago

I wouldn't be surprised if Jenna was as well. She has a book club and publishing imprint that promotes culturally diverse authors.

•

u/UFOsBeforeBros New Jersey 4h ago

I loved all the “Read With Jenna” books I’ve read (Remarkably Bright Creatures was one of them).

Laura was a librarian, so it’s cool that Jenna is continuing her legacy on a bigger platform.

•

u/justherefor23andme 3h ago

They both lean dem. Their dad famously spoke about how they both enthusiastically voted for Obama.

•

u/MandA-5 3h ago

It’s not a secret lol

Unironically she would be a compelling independent candidate for lower office in Purple Texas.

•

u/restore_democracy 4h ago

I was going to say TIL Barbara Bush is still alive before I remembered there was a younger one.

Good god I’m old. My first thought was, “How is she still alive???”

•

u/PHX_Geezer 3h ago

My first thought too.

•

u/marathon_bar 5h ago

The daughter.

•

u/Boring_Owl6552 4h ago

Good for her. She chose her country and her state over party - at least, what's left of the GOP, that is.

•

u/Dndrmflnscrtn 3h ago

had to check which barbara bush this was. still weird seeing that name on a talarico pac

•

u/YouWereBrained Tennessee 3h ago

She’s always been liberal. They had to keep it quiet while daddy was president.

•

u/happy_bluebird America 2h ago

yeah I was confused. This is less "news" than if it was the other Barbara Bush...

•

u/buffysmanycoats Connecticut 1h ago

The elder Barbara Bush died in 2018. It would indeed be interesting news if she did literally anything these days.

•

u/OfferaLink 4h ago

I made a one time donation today. He is going to win. Such a needed voice in the Senate

•

u/randomnighmare I voted 3h ago

Barbara Bush, the daughter of former President George W. Bush, donated to a political action committee that supports state Rep. James Talarico, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate for Texas, according to campaign finance records.

https://www.houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/news/politics/election-2026/2026/10/16/564593/barbara-bush-james-talarico-super-pac-us-senate/?amp=1

For a moment, I was thinking that former First Lady Barbara Bush was donating from beyond the grave, but it was W's daughter.

•

u/thebhguy9900 4h ago

Let's all remember that fElon is in the State still has his dirty bag of tricks, and they work better in corrupt red states with not a single statewide Democrat.  The R TX Sec of State is not going to make a big stink if something is off on the counting.

u/TheRealCheebahawk 4h ago

Make Texas Blue Again

•

u/Muted-Decision5131 3h ago

She is smarter than her family members! Thank you Barbara!!!

•

u/brandnewbanana Maryland 2h ago

Im very tired and I first thought Barbara Bush Senior had risen from the grave to donate. She probably would

•

u/elliepelly1 1h ago

Barbara Bush, the deceased one, was pro choice.

•

u/Typical_Leather_4086 4h ago

This is because the current GOP was high jacked by the maga pedo cult

•

u/seb21051 4h ago

Go Barb!

•

u/Traditional-Meat-549 2h ago

Haha I love it

•

u/Elegant_Magician_372 2h ago

Hell yes, Barbara! 💙

•

u/MaximumEffort433 Maryland 5h ago

Mama Bush always was a cool one.

•

u/pinkfartlek Michigan 4h ago

It's George's daughter. The matriarch Barbara Bush died in 2018

•

u/MaximumEffort433 Maryland 4h ago

Aww, shucks.

•

u/Heavenwasfull 3h ago

I didn't even know she was sick.

•

u/randomnighmare I voted 3h ago

She was 92 at the time of her death.

Do they suspect foul play?

•

u/Worthyness 2h ago

Grim Reaper don't play. Unless you're full of vitriol and hate. For some reason that keeps you alive much longer

I went as Mrs. Bush for Halloween one year.

•

u/LadyChatterteeth California 4h ago

When her husband was president, my mom once pointed out to me in the grocery store that Barbara looks (looked) exactly like the Quaker Oats man on the oatmeal containers. I’ve never been able to unsee that.

Kind of related, but I absolutely adore George Bush’s friendship with Michelle Obama

•

u/Cosmo_Seinfeld 3h ago

I don't. He's a war criminal directly responsible for hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths. Humanizing him is disrespectful to the people he got killed.

"Bush"!
The curse that will never die.

•

u/t92k 2h ago

Well, grandma died in 2018, so this must be W & Laura’s daughter.

•

u/JesusShaves_ 2h ago

I'll bet the surviving George Bush did too.
