I know a lot of people have fretted about the huge imbalance in spending this cycle, with Republicans having so much more for advertising than Dems do, but it doesn't matter how much you advertise something if it's a thing people don't want. Right now people are furious with Trump and the GOP for the mess they've made, and no amount of advertising is going to make that go away.
106
u/cosaboladh 11h ago
I think you're giving people too much credit. A staggering number of Americans votes are informed entirely by gut feelings, and a well crafted ad campaign can easily manipulate those gut feelings. You just have to make people more afraid of something democrats might do than they are of what Republicans are currently doing. Which is why they're trying to keep the news cycle on trans athletes, and not what crippling the FDA has done to food and drug safety, or what invading Iran for no reason has done to the economy. As obviously terrible as this administration has been for every aspect of American life, it's still going to be a flabbergastingly tight race.
23
u/MiserableVehicle5592 9h ago
"I'm going to be voting democrat for the congressional representative on my ballot. Still going to vote R for governor and any local politician. But I'm voting democrat for congress" -- text message from an R friend of mine I woke up to this morning. This administration is turning off their own voters... this guy is (was?) reliably red and is voting Democrat where he feels it matters.
•
u/SuperExoticShrub Georgia 7h ago
What's crazy is that that governor and local representative is just as responsible for the state of the GOP that allowed this insane nonsense to fester. It's not like there's some magical barrier of complicity that triggers only when you go federal, but somehow exonerates the state representatives.
•
u/BuyYouASodaOgie 6h ago
Exactly. I know it happens that some of these people get into politics at the federal level immediately, but most start as state reps or local government. That's why it's important to vote them all out to help stop the R treadmill. I'll never vote for a local Republican again. Not even for dogcatcher.
9
u/cosaboladh 9h ago
Your single data point has been noted. I'd like to believe the midterms will go the way any sane person should want them to. Too fresh are the memories of the 2016 campaign, and my telling worried friends, "There's no way there are enough people in the US who are crazy enough to elect that completely unqualified moron." I had to eat those words. Then he won the popular vote too in 2024. Proving that crazy & stupid is the rule in the US. Not the exception I'd hoped.

The advertising are lies theyve repeated enough that people believe them.
They are hurting due to policy, but they think Democrats turning kids trans with Muslim abortions is worse than what Trump has done.
How do you convince people that the leaders theyve trusted for decades have been lying to them the whole time?
38
u/RemoteSenses 10h ago
How do you convince people that the leaders theyve trusted for decades have been lying to them the whole time?
People vote with their wallets.
Trump came in 2016, inherited Obamas great economy, and fucked it all up so Biden narrowly won and inherited a shitshow along with COVID. People hated that, along with having the memory of an ant so they didn't realize how great Biden did turning things around - Trump lied enough that they only remembered how bad it was in 2020-2023....
Then again, Trump inherits a booming economy. He fucks it up again, and on top of it causes a global oil crisis by starting a war. Everything is vastly more expensive than when he came into office.
Republicans can't run or lie their way out of this one.

Advertising absolutely does have an impact on public opinion and voter perception. If it didn't, lobbying and donations like this wouldn't exist. Sure they can't change the fundamental problems that they created, but they can sure loudly muddy the water and point fingers and spread misinformation with TV, radio, internet, mail, etc forms of advertisement. The average person will remember whatever message was repeated the most.

I read the Wired article - he's not just donating, he's basically replacing small-dollar fundraising for them. That level of consolidation of political power in one donor is wild no matter which side does it.
228
u/Queasy_Donkey5685 13h ago
And it's incredibly destabilizing to the party and it's candidates. It's very much a double edged sword.
62
11
u/Truelikegiroux 11h ago
How is it destabilizing? If he’s replacing small dollar donations - does that mean that they are not trying as hard to get donations from the actual lower/middle class?
I guess I’m just confused how this much money could be bad for a political party
48
u/TheSlayerofSnails 10h ago
If he dies or loses his money or is arrested or decides he’d rather idk run squid game or build a bunker to live in, that means the Republican Party will not have the previous infrastructure for small dollar fundraising.
He’s the one propping it up, but if he goes it goes into free fall.

It limits the political party to things that Elon Musk approves of. They become more accountable to him specifically than anyone else. That's a lot of power to put in one man.

u/IngsocInnerParty Illinois 8h ago
Small donors represent highly engaged voters. In addition to being a single point of failure if he for some reason stops donating, it pulls that many people out of active participation.

If billionaires just ran their companies and buzzed off to their yachts on the weekend for hookers and blow parties, nobody would care about them.
Billionaires have become a societal evil because they’ve chosen to use their money for power. We’ve had rich people for a long time, but the current crop of billionaires are so much more in our faces when it comes to manipulating politics and trying to run our lives, the country, and the world.
Private sector tyranny is no more compatible with liberty and individual freedom than governmental tyranny, and these goons are demonstrating it for us.

But I hope everyone sane agrees it's all the more alarming when that one mega-donor is a literal Nazi.
8
u/triscuitsrule 11h ago
The irony being that while the fundraising from small-dollar donors is great, the bigger benefit is that if people are so motivated to support you that they personally donate to your campaign, you can bet your ass they’re a safe vote.
Small-dollar donors serves as a sort of barometer of support. Most money in political campaigns is wasted on ads and incompetent consultants. A billionaire donating millions is only guaranteeing their own vote while buying the possibility of influencing more people to maybe vote the same.
On the other hand, a hundred thousand people donating $10 each guarantees those hundred thousand votes, regardless of how the campaign wastes those dollars.
And Yknow what wins elections? Votes. Not dollars, like the consultants and aristocracy all want everyone believe.

199
u/Excelius 13h ago
Musk is only as rich as he is because of market manipulation and some really shady circumstances.
Tesla (and now SpaceX) simply do not deserve their valuations that vaulted him to the top of the billionaires list. Any sensible valuation would put him far down the billionaires list (though admittedly still a billionaire).
At least Bezos being worth hundreds of billions as a result of owning 8% of Amazon actually makes sense. Amazon makes more money than any other company on the planet. It's valuation is mostly rational.
94
u/2948337 Canada 13h ago

Bezos stole his billions from the working class.

Oligarchs need to take a long think too, look at what happened in Russia. They thought they had the cards, now half of them have been pushed out of windows and the other half are Putin's lapdogs. Trump is our Yeltsin, he is opening the door for a competent dictator to take the reigns and then the oligarchs will be wishing that they let a Democrat win.
30
u/PinHaunting7192 12h ago
Yup. The same thing happened under other dictators too. Contemporary and past dictators. They always align themselves with power until the power that be realizes that they hold all the cards. Then their assets and wealth become toys to take over. The only reason you hold the cards with a few billion on your bank account is because we all agreed we won't take it by force. Once that agreement fails, its the dude who commands the military and police force who has all the power.

Maybe. But he also overpriced himself on twitter, tried to get out of it, couldn't, tried to lie about the platform to argue they were defrauding him for the offer he made, and on and on and on.
He plays shell games with his companies and engaged in self dealing so they seem more profitable and is existing off of the vastly inflated stock prices, which are being propped up any way he can manipulate - the self dealing, getting listed on exchanges after bypassing the normal process and thus forcing big institutional investors to buy in to maintain their indexes, etc.
He's failed upwards but not because he's smart or diligent. It's because he started with so much he was able to leverage against smarter and more diligent competitors.
He very well may be panicking, considering the documentary out this weekend, DOGE exposes, clear evidence of manipulating foreign government operations, lackluster sales numbers and losing market share in other countries. Once the full force of the US government isn't shoveling money at him, he could hit a wall and spiral back to being a normal billionaire. From commentary from people who have worked for him, do you think he's handling the stress well?

If you want to fight Elon musk , then you have to make it entirely socially unacceptable to drive a Tesla or have one at all. The only way to do that it to enforce social consequences and ostracize Tesla drivers.
Consider statements:
- I’m not going to ride with you, I wouldn’t want to be seen in a Tesla.
- If you’re coming over could you park around the corner. I wouldn’t want my neighbors to think I was cool with tesla.
- I’d never sleep with someone who drove a tesla it’s a huge red flag
It’ll will take more than just not buying them to stop people from buying them. People with moral objections to musk already haven’t been buying him since he:
- Ran the original inventor who’s passion product became Tesla out of the company
- Nurtured a hostile and racist work environment for which he was sued
- Over promised and under delivered on their product just straight up lying about features
- Sexually assaulted his employees.
- Publicly humiliated and shamed his children
- Threw a tantrum calling a hero a pedofile because he had the audacity to point out his sub was bs.
- Started a hyperloop con to derail public transport.
- Bought twitter to boost hate speech.
- Gave public and financial support to Neo Nazis around the world
- Littered the night sky with trash.
- Helped trumps fascist regime come to power with money and electoral malfeasance.
- Destroyed national institutions and stole data with doge all while mocking the American people with props.
- Flashed a Nazi salute and lied about it as though it were not already obvious what he was about.
If you wanna stop him. Focus on the people who support him.
Remember Tesla drivers:
- 97%. Own their own home
- Have an average salary of $144,000
- 90% of ev owners have more than one car.
So don’t believe the strawman about poor Tesla drivers stuck with no option but to keep flying musks Nazi flag.
Besides even if you got your swastika tattoo before you knew about the holocaust. If you refuse to cover it, you are in fact making a statement. And we should hold you accountable.
If you think that we should be boycotting a different company show me definitive proof that they have done “all” of what Elon has “and” also shut the hell up
Edit: so you all know I’m blocking people so I don’t have to argue with them. They say that it’s counterproductive yet I’m not interested in convincing them. I’m more interested in not being assailed by defeatism and bad faith trying to convince me against something that is obviously materially true. So you may encounter a lot of whining but my feed is free of apologist nonsense and that in itself is a step in the right direction

I debadged mine. No Tesla logos remain on it. So, there’s your swastika tattoo removal. And remember that the swastika was a perfectly okay symbol before the Nazis co-opted it.
Tesla already got my money and there’s no changing that now. If I sell it at a loss and get a different car, someone else will be driving it, so I’m not sure what point it would really prove.
Before this Tesla, I’ve always had Toyotas. They’ve been reliable, long lasting, and - most importantly - they hold their value well better than any other brand, so once it’s time to get a new vehicle, it will be probably be a Toyota again.
Elon (and the US government) have fucked people like me over with constant price changes and tax credits that change from year to year. Resale values have cratered, and that’s unforgivable.
However, I do really like the Tesla as a car and it’s been completely reliable. No maintenance aside from tire rotations over 80,000 miles (knock on wood).

There was a number of month period where that world was truly united against musk and Tesla. It’s crazy he pretended to back out of the administration and it worked.

And it’s up to us to put Elon in his place. He thinks he’s more popular than he is.

The "supreme" Court deciding that money is speech is one of the biggest reasons that America is a corrupt, oligharch-owned disaster.
Your system of government is hopelessly broken and needs a complete overhaul.

The worst part is that 85% of his wealth is tied to government projects. So essentially the Republicans have found a way to use taxpayer money to pay for their elections. Its essentially you give me money Raytheon or space x for my election and ill give you a government contract which doesn't even need to pass an audit, then you make huge profit and use some of that to pay for my election and then contracts and then elections forever....

Because Trump isn't about to blow all his precious PAC money on this bunch of losers.

I’m fully expecting a “glitch in the matrix” where republicans actually hold or gain all their seats for house and senate. Going to vote in person anyways.

And all the money raised by the party through donations Trump has held onto, rather than releasing for use.
So Musk is making payments to supplement Trump's greed.
When Musk "gives" money, he is expecting a return. The biggest return for spent money is for him to mess with the data.

It only this amount of money hurt his bottom line even a little bit.
This level of wealth will lead us to calling this country the United Musk Alliance in a decade from now.

He's either capable of rigging the elections, far stupider than just about every other billionaire that has used the Republican party to protect/enable their wealth expansion, or has far more criminal acts/legal exposure than we can even imagine.
None or all three of these would surprise me but I sure hope that I am wrong about the ability to rig, 2024 was just a weird fluke, and this nightmare will soon be coming to an end.

can we just call them the epstein party? cause i mean, most of their money is to avoid being held accountable for being associated with Epstein.

One of the dangerous things about having people that can have more money than a lot of countries.
