I was recently laid off after the site I was working at shut down.
After interviewing around, I got an offer from a large, well-known pharma company for a management role. I accepted it and my background check is already complete.
The main concerns are that I’ve heard a lot of mixed/negative things about the site and company culture — management issues, internal politics, restructuring/layoffs, turnover, etc. I know reviews are not always accurate and every department can be different. The commute is also around 1 hour 15 minutes each way.
Now my previous employer, the company I worked for before joining the site that shut down, has offered me a management role as well. They are matching the compensation, the commute is only about 20 minutes, and I already know the team, systems and management very well. My former manager is someone I trust and had a very good relationship with.
The downside is that it’s a smaller biotech/startup. They had layoffs last year too, although things seem to be improving and the pipeline looks stronger now.
So basically:
Big pharma = stronger name/brand, new experience, but long commute and unknown culture/management.
Previous biotech = same management level, similar pay, very short commute, known team and manager, but smaller company and more startup risk.
The other complication is that I already accepted the big pharma offer before the second offer became real.
For people in pharma/biotech, which would you choose?
Edit:
The previous biotech is offering 20% more pay than big pharma.
