Discussion Is Penang air quality okay (Indo fires), or not a good idea Nov -> New Year?

• Upvotes

Hi semuanya, I'm thinking of visiting Penang for the first time, probably for 3 months. Obviously, there's a lot of issues with the haze. I met someone in Yogyakarta last week from Malaysia, he said it was okay, but they'd been traveling in Indo already for 2 weeks and I think situation got worse. Would you say it's okay to be in Penang for the end of the year, or the haze is not very pleasant?

The haze map on aqicn / malaysia says it's unhealthy for sensitive groups. I don't think I am, I generally do not get too affected by pollution in SEA cities, but anyway, just checking for your experiences. Terima kasih banyak!

Discussion Penang Travel Query

Hi guys! I'm a solo traveler who will be visiting Malaysia in early December. As much as I really want to explore Langkawi, I'm afraid I will run into insects / lizards there given it's a beach area and have heard such experiences from people who visited Bali etc.

I have an irrational fear of all insects (to the point I'm scared of big houseflies, moths and butterflies). Given this, would you suggest I take the risk or drop it entirely and go to Penang instead?

I'm already going to KL and Genting, just the third stop on my itinerary is kind of up in the air. Would appreciate any suggestions and advice in general as well for a first time solo visitor!

Discussion Need nightclub recommendations

So, I need your recommendations on the best nightclubs in Penang. I prefer clubs with english songs if possible but I'm open about the music. I want it to be a dancing club. A nice environment, good DJ, great crowd. Maybe mixed crowd would be good too. I'm new to nightclubs so I'll take any help I can get. Thank you

Discussion Travel to Penang (from Indonesia)

So, my family and I are planning a trip to Penang at the end of this month for a medical check-up and other things. I’ve already asked Gemini about various details, but I just want to double-check a few things.

  1. I plan to bring zero cash and just withdraw money using my Jago Visa card. Is that a good idea or not? Especially since I’ll need to buy a local SIM/data card at the airport upon arrival.
  2. For transport, we’ll mostly use Grab, so I can pay directly using the card linked to the app.
  3. Can I use QR payments? Specifically, paying via GoPay or Jago(Indonesian Bank) to a DuitNow QR code?
  4. Also can i just pay with my Jago visa card on Lam Wah Ee? Or maybe even QR

Thanks in advance

Picture Who manufactures Kek Lok Si's incense?

Post image

We visited Kek Lok Si during our Malaysian trip two weeks ago and love the smell at the various praying spots. Upon asking one of the employees there they have pointed us to this and we bought a box.

We love how this incense smells but we're rapidly going through it and the Kek Lok Si branding meant it was extremely difficult for us to find the manufacturer to try to order directly from.

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Worse case scenario I'll pay someone to ship me 10 boxes of these to the United States.

Discussion Any company that still providing WFH

Companies that provide WFH more than 1 day still exist in Penang?

I'm currently working as IT at an MNC but only allow 1 day WFH per week. Work is chill, but there's on call.

Company like Intel also gonna go back to office soon and remote benefits will be reduced.

I heard from an ex-collegue who currently working in another MNC company able to have 4 day WFH per week.

I value WFH over office because no jam, can save money, and more time with family, anyone have any experience or any recommendations of company that still providing WFH? Preferably MNC and near Bayan Lepas area

Discussion How far into the mainland does the haze go?

I used to live in Bukit Mertajam (just for a year) and I don't remember any haze in 2023.

Is the haze limited to the island and the coast? Or does it travel inland too?

Discussion Is this haze/smog/fog normal?

Hi - been in George Town for the past few days (lovely city).

But one thing we've had this entire time is very foggy conditions, unable to see far at viewpoints, or across the strait, etc.

Is this a normal occurrence this time of year, or is it worse because of other factors (I heard about the indonesian wildfires)?

Discussion What do you cook at home?

Dear people of Penang,

I was in Georgetown last week for 3 nights. We walked a lot, ate a lot, sweat a lot 😆. We ate from hawker stalls to restaurants, but we could only eat so much in 3 days, unfortunately. And we actually shared our meal (1 dish, 2 persons), so that we could taste more food for more places!

You have excellent cooks and food there! The price was also incredibly inexpensive compared to where we are from.

I fell in love with Penang/Malaysian food. I am now curious.

Seeing the queuing and the number of locals eating out, do you guys still cook at home? If you do, do you make char kway teow, laksa at home? 🤔

What do you actually cook at home?

Any local Malaysian cooking blogs that you follow/use which I can check out? It can be in Malay/Chinese, Google Translate will help ☺️

Thanks in advance!

Picture Making TNR more accessible in Penang

Hi Everyone! I'm Ricky. I'm from Maryland, USA and for the past year and a half I've been volunteering for an NGO based in Penang, Malaysia called Catsoterra.

We offer fully subsidized TNR to our volunteers for a yearly membership of RM60. Under our program, they can sterilize as many cats as they'd like within that year timeframe. We've sterilized 1,070 cats since April 2025! Besides TNR, our main focus has been trying to integrate technology into animal welfare for a couple of purposes -- one, to make the burden lighter for the volunteers who are doing this amazing work, and two, to try to make TNR engaging (it's not the sexiest side of animal welfare).

To do this, we created a dashboard where our volunteers can track the cats they've sterilized, make appointments at our partner clinics, post stories about their cats, and more. We've tried to make the dashboard engaging to individuals who don't do TNR as well! We have a "Cat-A-Log" of all of our cats, we have a virtual currency that can be used to virtually adopt cats, and we just launched Makan Mania, which is basically our version of cat Tinder.

ANYWAY, all of this is to say I would be SO APPRECIATIVE if you just had a look at what we are doing. If you'd like, you can join the dashboard FOR FREE and have a look around. Please let me know what you think! I'm really trying to get people in Malaysia interested in what we're doing.

Thank you!

Discussion Zul Milo Truck

Came across this Zul Milo Truck (https://maps.app.goo.gl/M3eeZ5cNJLbbz62S9) while looking for places to check out in Penang

There are only two reviews, both from 3 years ago. I also was not able to find consistent information about this Milo truck's location and opening hours online, and it seems that the truck was also spotted in Butterworth in the past.

Does anyone if know if this location is still accurate, or does the vendor rotate their location? Where can I find their latest location?
