Story Its official have been won over by Linux.
TL;DR down below
This is not a "You GuyS NeeD TO SwAp Too LInuX š¤" post this, is just my experience with it and you can take it for how ever you see fit. I am also very drunk whilst writing this. I apologize for any spelling mistakes and or grammar mistakes.
I have two computers and thought why not, so I made a boot drive for LinuxMint and swapped over my second pc. It was just for regular Computer stuff and had nothing important on it, just looking stuff up, playing worldbox and mindustry and thats it really and isnt a particular powerful PC (RTX 5050, Ryzen 5 7600X, 16g DDR5).
So I completely Uninstalled windows and Downloaded Mint. At first I was not super impressed. Yes it was cool and easy to use but didnt see it as a superior to windows. Just as good? For my purposes yes but not better
I then actually tried to play games. And it was not bad. It ran good as a matter of fact.
I then started to think, this is an OS, that is free, that can play games, theoretically if this bootdrive never breaks I can just use it forever.
I then swapped my main PC over to Linux (RX 7800xt, Ryzen 7 7800x3D, 32G DDR5) it played games just fine. 120fps on Mortal Shell 2 at 1080p High settings & raytracing, no problem. It also used way less ram than windows did. Like A LOT less, using 9G for running the game and the OS. I then decided to burn a Disk from the boot drive so I have a physical copy of it. I can make a bootable drive off the disc for as long as the disc survives. (Yes my PC has an optical drive, its a must have for me š)
Again, I thought to myself. This is a disc I can download this OS for FREE off of for as long as I have it, I havent had to code shit since I have been using this OS, It plays games, it uses less than 16G of ram and its easy to use... well shit Ill just use this forever.
I am now a Linux Devotee, just built my first two computers and PC gaming about 4ish months ago and already became a Linux nerd.
TL;DR: I tried out LinuxMint and it occurred to me that I literally only need my PC to turn on and play games and Lunix is free. Once I tried it and realized It not only ran games well this dirstro was easy to use and used about half the Ram windows does. and I havent had to code anything like how people describe linux online. So I Burned a disc of the Boot files so I have a physical copy as a backup to make bootable USBs off of for as long as Linux exists or I die.

Build Help / Purchase Advice Missing Computer
Hello Reddit,
I posted a little while ago about a prebuilt I ordered not showing up. Now I have more facts and info I want to share.
To start with I ordered the Aorus Prime 5 PC from Gigabyte through a retailer called Very here in the UK. It cost me Ā£2,700 as I used a 20% code as itās my first order through the retailer which is what they do for every new account.
The box arrived noticeably lighter than it should be. As in you could pick up this box with two fingers when itās meant to be 16kg.
I reported this to Very and the team only to have a week of being told they were ālooking into itā and being told to wait. We ended up contacting the CEO who surprisingly replied himself and escalated it to his executive complaints team.
They spent 2 weeks investigating and providing no updates to us. Yesterday I called them out of frustration and demanding answers only to be told that I could get a refund once they prove we didnāt receive the computer. I was confused because in every email I sent I offered video calls of us opening the package and on the first day of reporting it asked if someone could come in person to verify. They declined.
Now we must wait until Monday for someone to inspect the box three weeks after it was delivered. Luckily itās in the state we received it in still but the box was clearly cut open and retaped during delivery. If they suspect I did this then they could deny a refund. I do not have tons of money, Iām a uni student whoās been saving for a while and bought this to open on my 21st Birthday.
The situation has been handled poorly by everyone involved and I genuinely donāt know what to do.
Note: My Dad took in the parcel but assumed it was heavy as the guy offered to put it inside and only realised once he went to lift it. When he did the driver was already back in his van and leaving.
Edit: Also I forgot to mention but yes, I paid in full on a debit card. Maybe it was stupid but I didnāt expect all this to happen.

Meme/Macro Vibecoded my own Linux Nvidia Drivers. Results are better than Windows with ALL features enabled (DLSS5 and RT as well)
I'm not gonna share this cause it's optimized for my laptop and I have IMMENSE respect for the Linux developers to screw with their work. BUT, if anyone has time (it took me less than 2 months) and nothing to do with their OpenAI or Claude sub, this is a nice thing you can try! š
This is Control on High with 2 Passes of DLSS5. š On Windows I get 10 FPS and smeared textures. XD
The GPU is a 5070M 8 GBs.

Question 5090 agreed value insurance against malfunction ?
Paid 2-3k for a 5090 at launch and now itās worth 6-10k and an RMA will just give you what you originally paid not the market value to replace. Does any insurance company in USA offer agreed value insurance against hardware malfunction?

News/Article What should we expect from the future?
Now it's a year, the "RAMpocalypse" and the AI āhave been changing the hardware market (not only in the gaming/PC sector). Last news about Nvidia has pulled RTX 5090s from the market.... it seems even those already on stores might be redirected elsewhere. Prices for RAM, SSDs, GPUs and CPUs are constantly increasing.
At the time I viewed the cryptomining era as an unrepeatable disaster, but this situation seems far worse. So, what should we expect?
Personally, I believe that "tech" in general will become increasingly less accessible. The next generation of GPUs is not only significantly delayed, but it also risks being priced out of reach from the start (and might not even include a top card... an RTX 6090? I doubt it will even exist. Will AMD do one top card for the people? Or...just for professional AI markets?).
Some are hoping for the AI āābubble to burst, as the only way to get back normality.
Others argue that all this will continue and will push us toward cloud-based things, moving the need for hardware away from the local user to remote data centers.
Honestly, these scenarios do not appeal to me. What are your thoughts on all of this?

Question The AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D is annoying me a bit
It's my first AMD cpu, I've always been an Intel guy.
I'm having a hard time getting used to the way this thing handles heat. It's just works differently than what I've been used to the past few decades, it's a different technology.
I'm using a Peerless Assassin 120 with an upgraded Noctua Fan - it's a decent cooler. Despite that this CPU is 85c (the limit I set in bios) in almost every game - even if it's a game from 20 years ago (World of Warcraft Vanilla, for example). It just likes running hot and works it's butt off.
So here's the question: do I really need my cpu's fan blasting at 100% in an older game like WoW Vanilla? I'd rather not have the extra noise. It's gonna run at 85c regardless. Can I just turn the fan down to 50% and let the CPU throttle itself? Is that a thing people do these days?

Question So technically would it be a good idea to sell your high-end video card now make some money and then buy for cheaper much further down the road?
I keep thinking about this because I have a 5070 and I also have a 2070 super. Since video cards are so expensive right now maybe be a good time to sell the 5070 since I've been making double or triple when I paid for it?
Then in a few years from now buy it back when prices are really back to normal again? The meantime I could just use my 2070 super even though it's much worse performance.
Or do we collectively think GPU prices are probably never going to get back down to what they were because of all the stuff going on with AI?

Discussion Single Stick 16gb DDR5 better than 2x8gb DDR5?!!
I've had my 7500f and rx 9060xt 16gb for 8 months now, and by the title yes, I do own 2x8gb 6000mts cl36 ddr5 ram.
Before purchasing my gaming pc parts, I was told dual ram was always the superior option than to buy a single stick of the total ram for the system.
Now, I am told on am4 this was the scenario, BUT on am5 single stick of 16gb ddr5 is superior.
Now, my system isn't disapointing me at all - but I could had saved 35usd having a single stick of ddr5 with higher fps, and better low 1% fps.
Is this true? Just want to confirm if I am seeking the right information.
Edit: I'm still on the edge since there are dividing opinions below

Discussion I managed to inject the Reflex 2 demo DLL into other games ā could I release this publicly?
I decompiled the DLL from the NVIDIA Reflex 2 demo and managed to inject it into other games.
Before making anything public, Iād like to understand the risks. Is there a way to release my work without running into issues with NVIDIA, copyright, or anti-cheat systems?
Would sharing only my own code, while requiring users to obtain the original DLL themselves, be a viable approach? Any insight from people familiar with modding or software licensing would be appreciated.

Question To fully shut down daily or not to fully shut down daily: That is the question...
Gonna make a very dumb question here but want to get people's opinions on it since I hear mixed responses. Should, in your opinion, a gaming PC be fully shut down EVERY single time you're done using it for that day? Reason I ask is because I just got a new pre-built (yes, I'm aware that is heresy) and have done just that the past couple of days: Turn it on in the morning, put it to sleep mode when I'm away from it, and when I'm done using it would shut it off for the night so it wasn't in sleep while I was sleeping myself.
But then again, I've heard multiple different responses as to whether it should fully be shut down in the way I've been doing it. Consensus said every 1-2 weeks to do that instead and, for my case where I use my PC daily, just use sleep mode. My PC draws little power so I'm not worried about that standby energy use. Just don't want to accidentally be causing more damage than good by turning it off and on again so many times.

Discussion 9800X3D + 5070 Ti for ~$2,400 or 5080 for ~$3,000āis the extra $600 worth it at 1440p?
At the prebuilt prices Iām seeingāaround $2,400 for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D / RTX 5070 Ti / 32GB RAM system versus roughly $3,000 for a 9800X3D / RTX 5080 / 32GB systemāIām leaning toward the 5070 Ti configuration for 1440p gaming.
Thatās about 25% more money for roughly 15% higher average FPS across the six games below.
These are whole-system prices, and the other components can vary between listings, so this isnāt a perfectly controlled price comparison. But it got me wondering how much the extra GPU performance would actually matter at 1440p.
I compiled these results from FAST BENCHMARK.
Both benchmark configurations use:
- Ryzen 7 9800X3D
- 32GB DDR5-6000 RAM
- Ultra settings
- Ray tracing OFF
- DLSS / FSR / frame generation OFF
1440p results ā Average FPS / 1% Low FPS:
| Game | RTX5070Ti | RTX5080 | Avg. FPS Gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil Requiem | 103 / 86 | 114/96 | +10.7% |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 127/85 | 148/111 | +16.5% |
| Forza Horizon 6 | 129/112 | 142/123 | +10.1% |
| Battlefield 6 | 165/155 | 187/174 | +13.3% |
| Marvel's Spider-Man 2 | 133/98 | 148/110 | +11.3% |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 137/100 | 172/142 | +25.5% |
The roughly 15% improvement is the simple average of the percentage gains across these six games.
The 5070 Ti already averages above 100 FPS in every game here at 1440p Ultra. The strongest argument for the 5080 is probably its better 1% lows in Cyberpunk and RDR2: 85 to 111 FPS and 100 to 142 FPS, respectively.
Looking at these results, the 5080 seems to offer more headroom rather than a fundamentally different experience at 1440p. The 5070 Ti already looks capable in all six games, and if it falls well short of your target frame rate, the 5080 may not close that gap either.
At these prices, and based on this set of games, Iād lean toward the $2,400 configuration and keep the extra $600.
For people using either setup at 1440p, where does the 5080 make enough of a noticeable difference to justify the extra cost?
