As a dog owner who recently moved to Oslo, I am deeply disappointed and concerned by how restrictive the city feels when it comes to dogs.
Having lived in Helsinki, the difference is striking. There, I felt I could enjoy everyday life with my dog as a member of my family. In Oslo, it feels like dogs are unwelcome almost everywhere, making even simple activities unnecessarily difficult.
I understand that some people have allergies or are uncomfortable around dogs, and I respect that. But I find it difficult to believe that allergies alone explain such widespread restrictions.
Sometimes I wonder whether cultural attitudes and certain beliefs about dogs also play a role, with allergy concerns being used as a convenient justification.
I'm not suggesting dogs should be allowed absolutely everywhere. But why is there so little effort to accommodate both dog owners and people who prefer dog-free spaces?
For a city that promotes outdoor living and quality of life, Oslo feels surprisingly unwelcoming to people who consider their dogs part of the family.
Am I the only one experiencing this? Have other people who moved here from more dog-friendly cities noticed the same thing?
