Article/News Hakiym, the firefighter sentenced to prison for defending himself.
In 2024, Brian Hakiym Simpson was out on a hiking trip with his fellow fire fighters. He is a black (yes, his race is very important) firefighter who volunteered to help in the Oregon fires. A white man named Olson (who was already noted to be acting strange and aggressive) picked a fight with Hakiym, called Hakiym racial slurs, and then proceeded to attack him. Hakiym defended himself. Everytime the bystanders broke up the fight, Olson would just go after Hakiym again. He was persistently aggressive, and Hakiym rightfully defended himself. The fight was broken up again, and Hakiym left in his car, pulled over, and called his supervisor to tell him what happened. Mind you, even as Hakiym was driving away, Olson was running after his car.
Olson left this altercation THAT HE STARTED with a broken jaw. Olson called the cops. This was taken to court.
Witnesses testified that Olson was the one to start this altercation, Olson himself admitted to being the one to throw the first punch, starting this altercation. Olson was given a drug test. He tested positive for the illegal opiate heroine, and admitted to having a history with alcohol and drug abused.
So why in the f*** is Hakiym in prison for 5 years for second degree assault?
Cause of course they painted the aggressive white man as the victim. The prosecutor Olivia Mendez proposed that Hakiym's self defense was excessive, even tho Olson kept going after him. She kept this falsehood that Hakiym was bullying Ollson, even tho Hakiym has only worked with the man once. They weren't on the same team.
They brought up Hakiym's past history with him being charged as an adult at 15, later on in life getting in a fight with a different man, and for some reason going after him not disclosing his disability of blindness in his left eye from being shot by a paintball gun, but REFUSED to acknowledge Ollson's previous difficulties with other coworkers, Ollson's mental health history, or his actions and behaviors leading up to this. Dude was on heroine!
They painted Hakiym to be a thug for defending himself. The all white jury found him guilty, and Hakiym was sentenced to the minimum of 5 years in prison but also has to PAY Olson restitution???? WTF!!! This happening in Josephine County, which yall should already know, its a historical sundown town, and from what it seems, still is. Brandon Olson was never charged with anything. Wasn't charged with illegal drug use, wasnt charged with assault or battery.
This happened in 2024, Hakiym is still in prison, and his team has sent a repeal.
This is where you come in. You need to be LOUD about this. I know elections are coming up and this appeal is on Governor Tina Totek's desk RIGHT NOW! She is aware of it, and she has to power to lower his sentence, and even pardon Hakiym (which she should do. He was never supposed to be in prison). DONT LET HER DRAG HER FEET ABOUT THIS! Call and demand she accept this appeal, flood her social media in the comments with "Justice for Hakiym", notify your community about this.
Hakiym used his right to defend himself and he was punished for it. Don't let systematic racism win. This is just one of many cases, but this is one we can help in righting.
EDIT: took out second amendment part. no gun was involved. was just pointing out the amendment for defending yourself.

Political Can the governor “freeze” electrical rates?
It’s one of Drazan’s promises in her ads.
But aren’t rates set by the PUCs? Can she simply bypass them?
Or is she making a promise she can’t fulfill?

Political VOTE and VOTE EARLY
Love or hate the Feds, they more than likely have plans to interfere with the vote on Election Day, allies will be looking to tamper with mail boxes, drop boxes, etc. got by Halloween, preferably earlier and take it to a drop box, NOT your mailbox. Your public library should hopefully have a drop box. Be informed, stay aware, and do your research, even if you hate it.

Discussion/Opinion Donors to Drazan/Hicks
I was confused and admittedly naive last week when I posted a question to this thread inquiring as to why the biggest donor to Drazan is an Auto Dealership owner in Southern Oregon.
There appeared to be no “clear” answer like a single issue or legislation. Just they almost are universally supporters of GOP… even in this “climate” of ICE, deny climate change, etc.
Today there is another BIGGER auto dealership owner weighing in for Drazen and Hicks (So. Oregon) in a regional paper(Rogue Valley Times)
Yikes! I suspect it is an Oligarch like issue or reasoning… perhaps they do not want to pay taxes in accordance to their wealth? I mean… they criticize schools and infrastructure and “perhaps” are unwilling to pay towards those populace needs. Not donations which advantage them… TAXES which advance ALL. Ugh crazy times, indeed!

Question Plug-in solar?
This is a long-term DIY project. I'm thinking about building a carport and install plug-in solar panels on its roof. Has anyone done this before. I've heard it's not legal? I found that there's HB 4080, but it's tabled until next year.

Discussion/Opinion Anyone have a handle on the legal differences between modular and manufactured homes in Oregon?
So, we have a house that I'm pretty sure should be considered to be a modular home when it's categorized as a manufactured home. It was constructed elsewhere, transported here in three sections, and then assembled here on a fixed foundation. It has/had no wheels that I can tell (there's a crawl space underneath)and has pretty large steel i-beams underneath supporting the house. The home was constructed in 1999.
I found a definition of manufactured home in Oregon law:
"“Manufactured home,” except as provided in paragraph (b) of this subsection, means a structure constructed for movement on the public highways that has sleeping, cooking and plumbing facilities, that is intended for human occupancy, that is being used for residential purposes and that was constructed in accordance with federal manufactured housing construction and safety standards and regulations in effect at the time of construction."
I think the law was changed not long ago and I'm trying to figure out if this home is legally considered a "manufactured home". The problem is that this isn't and never has been a mobile home and most people think that's what a manufactured home is. We had someone come over and say, "Wow! Never would have expected a mobile home to look like this!" Well, that's because it's not.
Any pointers are appreciated! Thanks!
Discussion/Opinion Hillsboro or Beaverton: which would you rather live in?
Gonna be moving closer to Portland and can't decide between Hillsboro or Beaverton.
If you've lived in either one what's it actually like?
Anything one has that the other doesn't, or stuff people don't really talk about?
I know MAX runs through both so I'm guessing transit isn't that much different, right?
If you had to pick one which would you go with and why

PSA DATA CENTERS IN OREGON: Share your thoughts with the governor. Deadline Oct 24!
Are you sickened by the prospect of data centers being built in Oregon, sucking up our precious water, straining our power grid, increasing our dependence on fossil fuels, plastering thousands of acres of land, all while the wealthiest and most powerful tech companies in the world get tax breaks worth millions of dollars and provide *relatively* few permanent jobs... all in the name of forcing AI into every aspect of our lives?
Governor Kotek's Oregon Data Center Advisory Committee (DCAC) released a report, and has given the public very little notice or time to respond to it. Comment deadlines are due before 5pm on October 24th
Read the DCAC report: https://www.oregon.gov/energy/get-involved/Documents/2026-09-10-DCAC-Preliminary-Learnings.pdf
See what Oregon Data Center Defiance had to say in response: https://www.ordcd.org/pbdcreport
And submit your own comments here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DCAC-Comments
If you're not into reading reports, you can just submit a comment about why you don't want data centers built in Oregon. It's highly unlikely that NO data centers will be built here. So the best we can do is make sure they'll be heavily regulated, big tech companies pay their own way, and that our communities and economies actually benefit from their presence.

Discussion/Opinion Best Oregon geology book?
Hi everyone,
Been wanting to pick up a book on Oregon geology for hiking/traveling. I'm looking at Roadside Geology of Oregon 2nd Edition, Miller and Living With Thunder, Bishop. Wondering if anyone's read both and has a preference; or if there's a better alternative to these two books. I already own Hiking Oregon's Geology, Bishop, and quite like it although I want something with greater scope and depth.
Thanks!
