Why Open Captions Rustic Theatre, a one-screen theater in Idyllwild, California provided a brief answer to the question of why open captions
Checked our email and found a response from the one-screen Rustic Theatre in Idyllwild, California to that question about why they continue to offer open captions:
"The Rustic Theatre offers Open Caption Screenings every Tuesday night regardless of what film is playing for all our hearing impaired local patrons. We have also discovered that some patrons actually prefer the Open Caption option and specially come on a Tuesday night to see the film."
Let's assume that "some patrons" means people without hearing loss.

Has the AMC Raceway in Westbury, New York also quit offering open captions?
Sure looks like it. We checked today and there are no open caption screenings scheduled currently nor for the upcoming blockbusters. That theater had previously had open captions for a long time. We raced to the AMC Open Caption page to double-check. Gone! But the theater website still claims to offer open captions. Checked Internet Archive. AMC Raceway is not on the June 6, 2026 screenshot. February 27, 2026. Not there either. How far back did we have to go to find evidence that the AMC Raceway had offered open captions as part of the AMC Open Caption Program? We kept going back in the Archive until we found it on March 28, 2025. That means this theater had quietly quit offering open caption screenings sometime in 2025, but like other AMCS that quit the program, didn't bother to make their website truthful. This is unfair to people who need or want open captions. New York State NEEDS a law for open captions to protect what it has and to require the bigger theaters to offer open captions statewide! See the lie highlighted in the screenshot taken today.
