This is NOT onion hate speech by any means, but rather me sharing with fellow onion lovers a risk they might want to consider about eating a lot of onions in a sitting. I will always love them and want everyone else to as well.
This evening I ate 3 incredible onion bhajis of medium-large size from my local indian place. So this probably consisted of about 2-2.5 white medium onions per bhaji? Really crispy and perfect, the best I’ve had fr, so I went for more than usual.
However, I got full really fast, despite it not being a large volume of food to get full on (for me) and really soon after eating them I had crazy stomach tightness, I was struggling to breathe no joke.
I discovered that delicious onions are very high in fructans, which are “a type of highly fermentable carbohydrate (FODMAP) that the human small intestine cannot easily absorb. When they pass into your large intestine, your gut bacteria rapidly ferment them, producing large amounts of gas that cause *IMMEDIATE* bloating and tightness.” So this explained why the full feeling came very fast when I usually eat more volume in a sitting. I’m sure the fat from deep frying also played a part hehe.
It was rough you guys. I am someone who eats a lot of high fibre and fodmap foods including onions on the regular, which I digest pretty well normally but the uncomfortable tightness lasted a good while💔I’m going to eat the bhajis again but have 2 instead of 3 next time.
Just a tiny warning to be careful when eating a lot of onions at once especially if it’s alongside fatty/ fried components. I would hate for anyone else to have a bad onion experience like me and be put off them💕💗💕💗💕💗💕💗💕💗🧅🧅🧅🧅🧅🧅🧅
