I don't speak ant, but I think that's a pretty clear: "Don't mess with us we mean business"

They sound like tiny percussionists coordinating a rainforest jam session.

Wish I could be as chill about it as you. Im sure the purpose is to ward off predators and I gotta say it is working for me.

Why do they do that?

Like a snake hissing at you? Or a dog barking at you. It’s a warning to stay back.

I love it when the first thing I see is the question I want to ask and plausible response.

It looks like they only do it from stimulus. Meaning by the time I run into them while hiking in the middle of the Amazon it’s already too late 😭

In addition to making noise to signal a "risk," they move together, making it appear as though they are a single, larger organism.

We also have weaver ants that build nests like this, called green ants.
They don't "drum" like these guys. However they do squirt formic acid from their abdomens which they then squirt onto the spot where they bite you.
We also have ants called Jack Jumpers. And there have been at least six recorded deaths due to Jack Jumpers since 1980. Most of them died within 20 minutes of being bitten and stung by a jack jumper.

Somewhere out there countless years ago there was a single ant that got so scared that it's legs got all shaky and all the other ants around it just kinda went with it

r/AIDKE (Aninals I didn't know existed). I've been alive for over 30 years and always been a fan of animals, yet somehow at least a few times a month, I discover an animal that is completely new to me. So cool.

Extra fascinating considering ants have no hearing.

I yelled at some near me and they trembled in fear. What else you got? They taste like popcorn? Cause false smarty pants
