I was with him right up until he broke out the hunting knife and blowtorch.
18
u/dinkydeath 21h ago
Former EMT (that, for whatever reason, still has his station boots). The blowtorch was holey unnecessary, but shoeshine, a horsehair brush and a lighter work wonders. And no, I can't explain the science...I don't understand it myself.
17
u/E--S--P-- 17h ago
I'm not positive on the science but I do leatherworking. I'm not sure what you're doing with the lighter but the horsehair brush is essentially a micro abrasive and creates enough heat to melt waxes and evens them out and let's them form a smooth coat.
Polishing metal is the reduction of scratches on the surface. Polishing leather is the same, but the surface is coated with wax. It won't work on all leather. It requires a specific type of top grain.

Whats the point of the fire? Is it the algorithm says it's a good thing to do so he keeps doing it?
35
u/ardotschgi 20h ago
From what I read, the guy stages the wornness of his shoes, to have a high video-output. And one part of that fake wear is applying wax.

The knife, the fire, doing it all while on the foot, the ignoring of the whole back area..... not satisfying at all

u/voitlander 21h ago
Why the knife? It didn't do anything!

u/Primary_Welcome_6970 21h ago
Because it's not shoe care it's just a video for views. If anything you just need something to remove waxes and so (which you'll seldom use), agressive brushing, a damp cloth, some wax or conditioner and some more daily agressive brushing.
2
u/Smango109 7h ago
I'm pretty sure it's because it's an ASMR video. A lot of what he's doing is to create specific sounds.
9
u/thatG_evanP 8h ago
Pretty sure that's a fake foot too
1
u/Commercial-Camel6102 5h ago
Pretty sure it's a real foot if you look closely at when they start the shampooing the person's food dose a slight turn once other then that they actually stay ready still making almost think the same thing🤣🤣

This guy in particular pisses me off because there's so many pointless bullshit things he does in these videos, I simply cannot enjoy it
20
u/Busy_Toaster 17h ago
Sometimes I like something only to look in the comments and find out that I'm a weirdo or simply wrong
4
u/FarSideoftheMobius 10h ago
Nah, not weird. For an actual shoe shine (if you like regular speed asmr videos), check out AngeloShoeShine on YouTube.

Just take it off and put it on a last. There is no reason to have a foot in there, you only risk damaging or staining their clothes.
34
u/Bedevier 22h ago
I understand maybe at some booth near an area with heavy traffic not taking the shoe off as part of the gag but feels like they took that tradition to create some kind of manly pedicure but without taking off the shoe, cause that’s not manly or something.
28
u/Dioxybenzone 22h ago
I’d be annoyed if my shoe shine made me take my shoes off
9
1
u/Taptrick 14h ago
Well that’s what I mean. This is no longer a shoe shine this is an extensive refurbishment.

I was a street urchin cleaning shoes in a past life, most of what they're doing in the video would have gotten me kicked in the face.
3
u/PleaseBeNiceForOnce 14h ago
Why?
10
u/platinum92 14h ago
Waste of time probably. I'd imagine most just want the brush off, polish applied, then buffed once. The fire, air drying and random buckle flicking are a waste of time. This video is 2 and a half minutes, edited down and for only one shoe. Doing 2 shoes probably takes 15 minutes with this method, if not longer with all the tools.

u/SoungaTepes 22h ago
The uneven use of the knife confuses me, what’s its purpose?
63
u/ropeynick 22h ago
It’s because the content creator found a niche and the algorithm is telling him to keep doing it.
These videos are nothing to do with shoe care and everything to do with views.

This is an overdramatic waste of time.
If your paying for a show that's fine but if I'm paying for a shoe clean clean the fucking shoe.
So much wasted time and effort

u/TheKnightDetective 16h ago edited 16h ago
Nobody is paying this guy for the service. It's just ASMR internet content.

u/hey_im_cool 16h ago
I’m convinced people get shoe shines for the asmr more than the actual shine. It’s insanely relaxing. I don’t get the sensory response from videos but irl, from things like shoe shines, I do
1
u/ThePeteEvans 14h ago
It’s about taking care of the leather. A shoe like this can last a lifetime if conditioned a few times a year
2
u/hey_im_cool 14h ago
Yeah, that’s definitely part of it. But if leather care were the whole point people could do it at home or drop the shoes off. Having them shined while you’re wearing them is part of the appeal. It’s very relaxing and I’m pretty sure that’s the reason this particular type of shoe shining exists
1
u/Sealbeater 13h ago
I get haircuts for all the head scratching, it sends a tickle down my spine that is very relaxing. I could see myself getting my shoes shined to get that same feeling too

What was the soap? Just normal dishwasher soap? Or some special mixture? That seemed to have helped a lot.

Why do they always have to flick things in videos. Idk why but it gives me the heebee jeebies

So….lets vote. Was the shoe black or blue? I think it was blue.

This is not a black shoe, I'm sure they have a fun name like slate for the color, but it is a darkened blue of some kind.

u/TotalSmart6359 21h ago
Was he hanging drywall wearing that shoe? Black leather is a pain in the ass to keep looking good when it wears slightly. Brown looks better as it gets broken in and aged.
4
u/confit_byaldi 21h ago
The first over-the-top shoe cleaning video I saw was oddly satisfying. Every other since then has been tedious.
10
u/SirClark 12h ago
It felt like more than half of what he did in this video was basically pointless. Also why do they not just take the shoes off to do this?
4
u/Allthingsgaming27 7h ago
That’s not how you shine shoes, a shoe shiner typically has you sitting in a shoeshine stand if you’re in the US. Whenever I’d go visit family abroad, the person (usually a kid) had a mobile kit and they’d do it wherever you were sitting.
2
u/DieCastDontDie 10h ago
This is usually done on your way to somewhere. There is no stand or even a place to sit. You just place one foot at a time on a wooden chest with a metal footrest.
My complaint is about the paint. He should have put a coat of paint before the polish.
1
u/caillouuu 9h ago
Shoe shiners paint the shoe??
2
u/starkindled 5h ago
I assume shoe blackening? Though I'm not sure these were black to begin with, they look navy to me

Pointless parts aside, I personally think the shine is tacky and wholly unnecessary. Those shoes look 100% better in matte natural leather.

u/Ok_Musician_1072 16h ago
So, foam and a cloth did the job. The rest was unnecessarily jerking around.
2
u/SneakyZohan 14h ago
Looks impressive, but if those cracks were real, they probably just got covered up.
2
u/rachaek 21h ago
Any reason why the person has to keep wearing the shoe? Surely this would be easier if the person too their shoes off first?
1
u/Rogan403 15h ago
In this specific situation? No theres no reason.
IRL at an actual shoe shiner service? In most cases you're not bringing a pair of shoes to drop off at a shiner but instead getting the shoes you're currently wearing shined so taking them off would mean subjecting the shiner and, depending on how pungent they are, the people passing by to whatever foot funk would be unleashed.

Source of the clip is Peter's shoerevive on YouTube. Every video is pretty much the same, 40+ minutes of the same process on different shoes. And yeah it's pretty clear they dirty up the shoes themselves and some of the steps don't seem like how you would ever clean a shoe... But it's pretty decent for ASMR.

u/Academic_UK 20h ago
Best point is the last 3 seconds and when it loops back to the start!
This is the ONLY good reason for looping videos on social media

Years ago I used to get my shoes shined on the way to work at Penn Station for a few bucks. Took about fifteen minutes, read the paper, walked away with shiny shoes and a brainload of news. I miss it.

Whilst I appreciate the outcome, I do wonder at the start point, its like that guy on youtube cleaning rugs. He started out with somewhat dirty rugs, then after some time they looked like they had been through a war of some kind and one was left thinking, na man, this is utter and total bullshit of the highest order and thats what this is.

Wow! When still dirty I thought the shoe was black. Not only the shoe isn’t black, it’s two tone blue…

People are mistaking "cleaned up" for "cleaned"
That's not somebody washing a shoe, that's somebody refinishing a leather shoe.
Think going through a carwash vs having the paint polished and coated.

Could someone tell me what the point of that metal buckle even is? I've seen ones like it before and they never seem like they're actually doing anything. Both ends are mounted onto the same continous strip of leather

u/The-Copilot 21h ago
I think it's just for style. It probably resembles old shoe buckles.
Most dress shoes have some type of style accessory there to make it not just a plain leather shoe. I've seen some with styled leather straps or strips that kind of look like laces but aren't functional.

I don't feel satisfied at all I feel uncomfortable watching the guy fondle and stoke a foot. I can't imagine a real shoeshine doing this to someone unless they also want to be kicked in the face.

Its not a real foot but a piece of foot they stuck inside a shoe. You can see it more clearly around 1:10
