Dropping dry ice under slime creates a smoke explosion (Non-OC)

u/NXTnerd 1d ago
Playing with dry ice in any hands on capacity seems like a bad idea.

u/Hashtagbarkeep 1d ago
It’s not ideal but it’s fine for a few seconds, you can pick it up quickly and it won’t harm you.

Yeah, just need to come to terms with your brain that you might lose some skin on your hands after.
428
u/Hashtagbarkeep 1d ago
You won’t, you can feel it when it’s going to hurt you like if something is a bit too hot. I don’t recommend holding it for ages but you can happily pick up a piece and move it about with no damage.

u/yamanamawa 1d ago
I feel like people heard dry ice can burn you and then assumed it's like handling red hot metal. Like no, you can pick it up. If anything the sublimation adds an extra layer of safety. Just don't go gripping it for extended periods and you're fine. It's kinda like a coal. Your brain may feel like it's burning instinctually, but it's not

u/pickled_philanges 1d ago
This oh my god. My dad would bring home huge tubs of it from his job when I was a kid and we would make bottle rockets with them. Told people at school and they freaked out like I was burning myself alive, like no?

We used to make pumpkin bombs out of 2 liters and blow them up. Super loud, super fun, stay behind cover.

It's classic reddit where they learn something, then rush to spread that knowledge without fully understanding it. Same with cement, where they act like a brief touch will burn your skin off.

I play with dry ice at work lol. I have sweaty hands that tend to run hot so I’ll hold a piece for a few seconds to cool down
13
u/Cruhhhhh 1d ago
Agreed. I would just strongly advise against licking it.
9
u/CartsOfDarkness 1d ago
Nah you can lick it, it won't be pleasant but it won't freeze your tongue solid or anything. However I would strongly advise against swallowing it.

One of the odd jobs I had a long time ago was working in the airline industry that supplied meals for flights. We worked with dry ice all the time. I’d handle it without gloves every now and then. My hands are fine. They have all the skin that’s supposed to be there.

I use dry ice at work. Have touched with bare hands many times, it does not instantly burn you.
It's just like picking up something hot, the heat builds up until you cannot handle it anymore and you are forced to drop it. Dry ice works the same way.
11
u/Dovahkiinthesardine 1d ago
I've handled dry ice a couple dozen times with my hand. You can't hold it for long but there is literally no damage whatsoever if you briefly touch it
3
u/SlicedBreadBeast 1d ago
lol no. This was handed out pellet form in my grade 12 class. We of course had a how long can you hold it contest in the middle of our palms. No one walked away with anything.

I used to work with a guy who would put some in his mouth with a bit of water to pretend to breathe smoke and used it as a bit for his customers. Guy was a bit... off though.
45
u/Hashtagbarkeep 1d ago
This I definitely wouldn’t recommend, swallowing it by accident would be extremely bad. Also, having something that produces CO2 in the place where you breathe in things that aren’t meant to be CO2 can’t be a great plan either
17
u/smilesnseltzerbubbls 1d ago
While swallowing dry ice would be bad, you breathe in CO2 with every breath. The insanely cold temperature on your flesh is most concerning
7
u/cortesoft 1d ago
C02 makes up about 0.043% of the atmosphere, which is 440 parts per million (PPM). Indoors with poor air circulation can start to increase that, and it starts making us feel bad when it gets over 1000 PPM or so (so when it hits 0.01% of the air).
That is very different than breathing in pure C02. Concentration is everything when it comes to toxins.
10
u/Hashtagbarkeep 1d ago edited 1d ago
We don’t breathe pure carbon dioxide. If you ever go to a brewery or distillery stick your head in the top of one of their fermentation tanks and breathe in. It’s like you’re dying. Because I guess you kind of are.
Issues from swallowing it is it still produces a lot of gas as well as being super cold, so it could stick in your throat and expand. Either way it’s not good.
2
u/smilesnseltzerbubbls 1d ago
Yes I understand we regularly only breathe in fractional amounts of CO2, but I guess I was imagining it would have to be a small chunk of dry ice to comfortably fit in the guys mouth from the comment above, with plenty of room for water, room to not touch edges of mouth and ‘breathing smoke’ room.
Now I’m just curious and having fun:
If the average man’s mouth can hold up to ~70 ml at max capacity (google AI) and I imagine this chunk of ice would comfortably be maybe ~20% of that volume so approximately 14 cm3 plus or minus some. This size of dry ice submerged in water at room temperature would sublimate in about 1-3 minutes, and would do so even faster as the water in the man’s mouth heated from body heat.
In this very short time frame, in which most people could hold their breath for and be fine, the very cold temperature touching the flesh and removing the body heat from tissue rapidly, killing intestinal linings, does still seem to be a much larger concern5
u/MattieShoes 1d ago
Dude, no.
Yeah, we breathe in CO2, but dry ice is about 1000-2000 times the concentration of CO2 (ie. 100% rather than under 0.1%). The dose makes the poison.
The high level of CO2 is much more of a concern than some minor skin damage.
At low concentrations, gaseous carbon dioxide appears to have little toxicological effect. At higher concentrations it leads to an increased respiratory rate, tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmias and impaired consciousness. Concentrations >10% may cause convulsions, coma and death.
It's not just displacing oxygen -- it's very bad even when there's plenty of oxygen.

When I was a kid I messed with dry ice all the time. Crushed it into small chunks, then stuffed it in two liter bottles with just a splash of water. Things would near instantly inflate and after a minute or two would explode with the sound of a shotgun firing. Couldn't cause any harm outside of hearing, but it was great fun as a destructive teen.
11
u/Evepaul 1d ago
Dry ice sublimates when you touch it, so it's hard/impossible to get full skin contact with the solid part, and gases don't absorb heat that well. Digging into a box full of dry ice pellets with one's to make room for a sample is a pretty common occurrence if you're shipping in dry ice.

Aww we did all sorts of experiments when we were 10. Though there's no way we could get our hands on dry ice. So we just mixed fertilizer with sugar, packed it in used paint cans, and went making craters. It was fun.

We also used to get hobby rocket motors and crush them up, fill pipes or spent CO2 cartridges with them and make 💣 .

Why are half the comments here under the impression dry ice will instantly destroy your limbs if you touch it briefly?
Yeah it’s not best safety practices in a chemistry lab, but you’ll be fine as long as you’re not an idiot about it (like continuing to hold it once you can feel it starting to hurt)
13
u/FrostyD7 1d ago
Virtually nobody has experience handling it but everybody has been warned of the dangers, which doesn't typically cover the nuances of how much you can play with it before you get hurt. Doesn't necessarily justify being so confidently wrong but it does explain not knowing.
3
u/thissexypoptart 1d ago
The confidence truly is wild to see
One comment said touching dry ice is like touching a hot stove, in that you can be quick and minimize damage, but it’s still dangerous.
It’s nothing like touching a hot stove lol. More like a cup of tea that’s just been poured boiling water into.
You feel the temperature on your hand/fingers and, unless you have a temperature sensation issue, should be able to drop it in time to avoid an injury, based on sensation alone. A hot stove, way hotter vs your skin than dry ice is cold, is much more likely to burn you in a fraction of a second.
That doesn’t mean handling it is “safe” but it’s safe enough if you’re not an idiot.

Cryogenic burns can occur in seconds.
This is like saying it's okay to touch a hot stove for a few seconds, it won't hurt you. Like, sure, a split second touch might be relatively fine but you're really rolling the dice hereEdit: turns out dry ice is like quicksand in that I went through my entire childhood thinking it was way more dangerous than it actually is lol
97
u/Hashtagbarkeep 1d ago
I worked with dry ice and liquid nitrogen for years, yes, there are precautions to take and obviously there are dangers but neither will immediately burn you. Dry ice you can handle pretty easily with bare hands, like a slightly hot potato.
47
u/ApplePaintedRed 1d ago
I handle dry ice semi regularly, and I agree. Definitely not anything like a hot stove. If it's about to burn you, it'll start to hurt enough for you to remove your hand(s). Fear mongering over such a small piece they aren't even touching feels extreme.
35
u/Hashtagbarkeep 1d ago
It’s so weird on Reddit when people confidently tell me something that I know from personal experience is completely wrong. Dry ice is not scary unless you put it in a sealed container or you swallow it really
10
u/Talk-O-Boy 1d ago
Many of us learn real world interactions from the internet, so we just parrot what we read somewhere else.
It’s highly likely the person correcting you has little to no experience handling dry ice at all.
24
u/Magikarp-3000 1d ago
Redditors just love to be safety experts, and will overblow very not dangerous things just to seem smarter
4
u/TheMisterTango 1d ago
I’ve dumped liquid nitrogen on my head before in small quantities, the leidenfrost effect protects you from immediate damage.

Have you ever handled dry ice? It's very doable. I've done it before many times. You still want to be careful but it's not like it's sticky so you'd just about have to intentionally grasp it and hold on. They're not even directly touching it in almost any of this clip.

BaNg! sLaP! ClIcK! Videos are all some ASMR bullshit that TikTok made the norm. Throw in tight closeups and 0.10 second cuts, hyper-bright lighting and you got yourself "content."
It appeals to the short attention span crowd that is growing exponentially every day.

It isn't even good as ASMR content. I've been watching ASMR videos since 2017 and these don't even get close to scratching the same itch.

Just FYI—dry ice is just frozen carbon dioxide. Not only can it explode when contained and forced to react, which is dangerous in itself, but the CO2 that is released can cause a small space to have less Oxygen and saturate with CO2, which can cause you to pass out and then quickly kick the bucket.
This happened at an influencer pool party in Russia. They put a ton of dry ice in a pool for “cool visual effect”, and it ended in disaster.
There’s also been incidents at more ramshackle haunted houses or nightclubs. You really shouldn’t be doing this at all, but inside and in like a tiny bathroom? Definitely a bad idea.
Don’t mess around with Dry Ice in small spaces, don’t swim underwater with it, and don’t try to contain it and kersplode it—stick with Diet Coke and Mentos maybe.
