Close to perfection…
… but still so much work to do!
Can’t find the source. Sorry.

I can see the infuriating parts of this as I was getting antsy there, but I do really enjoy watching masons work their magic.
We are only seeing this in 2D but he is sculpting the edges and backside too. Also he is looking at balance. I think some forget that.

u/TechnicalPlayz 1d ago
For sure. I actually am really happy seeing videos like this where its not the always first try perfect. This shows how actually impressive it is

Don’t worry, he’ll get more practice when he does another stone tomorrow.

How can you build Rome in a day at that point?

He’s not went wrong… he can’t measure and he can’t settle by getting “close”… the stone has to perfectly fit with the other stones in many ways: form, depth, balance, good looking and so on.
He’s doing a very good job.
It will just take time… a looot of time!!
24
u/Positive_Try929 1d ago
U misunderstood the point, this is r/odysatisfying, just like the failed attempts, it didn't fit!

Except they sell profile gauges today that he could take a negative and fit pretty closely to avoid like 4 of his 7 carving attempts.

There’s a period-accurate castle being built with a video crew following the old methods if you’re interested.
26
u/ValyrianSteelYoGirl 1d ago
And they’ve been going on it since ‘97

u/Alex-Murphy 1d ago
I love that it's making millions a year through tourism. It really shows that people have a deep love for this kind of project and architecture.
4
u/citizen42069101 1d ago
I think people, as a whole, want to know and learn and help build and progress society.
But since that's not always profitable, or said by people that agree with us, we throw the baby out with the bathwater and hold ourselves back
4
u/whiskeytown79 1d ago
Old castles did sometimes take decades, or even generations, to complete.
4
u/WhiskeyAndKisses 1d ago
And with Guédenlon, the point is not really to build a castle, but to practice medieval skills, attract tourists and do experimental archaeology. (Or so I guess)
2
3
u/Jetman1996 19h ago
Well, they’ve been at it well before 1997 but they didn’t get their website until ‘97!
3
u/jojowhitesox 1d ago
If you are interested in the construction of this there is a series available on Prime called Secrets of the Castle. 3 historians live and work at the site for a year. They live, dress, work, and eat like medieval workers.

u/IHaveTheBestOpinions 1d ago
They mostly used rectangles, which are much more efficient
11
11
u/HugsandHate 1d ago
This is a common misconception. We used to think they were rectangles, but it turns out they were just really bad at making squares.

u/Hetros_Jistin 1d ago
only if you have access to iron tools. If you don't, then this method displayed above PROBABLY works a hell of a lot better.
6
u/IHaveTheBestOpinions 1d ago
The method above requires precisely shaping the rock. If you have the tools to do this on site, then you have the tools to make rectangles.
I don't doubt that there are other methods that require less stone shaping, but that's not what we see here.
3
u/BearJohnson19 1d ago
Just as an example, Incan masons used hammerstones for shaping blocks and did both polygonal (like the vid) and ashlar (rectangular). Ashlar took more effort because each face of the block needed to be worked, whereas polygonal blocks only needed to be worked on 2-3 sides.

URLs have "query strings" that send data to the web server. These are delimited by a question mark (?) for the first one and an ampersand (&) for any subsequent ones. In YouTube's case the
t=...is the timestamp andis=...orsi=...is the tracking parameter and should be removed.Tl;dr: remove just

From what I understand this is the exact same method the ancient Egyptians used to build the pyramids. The only difference is they had aliens to lift the big blocks into place.
Edit: I was just making an ancient aliens joke, I have no idea if the building method is similar.
12
u/notnotDIO 1d ago
It's closer the what people in like Peru were doing than Egyptians, especially since the Egyptian Pyramids were made from rectangular blocks (which have worn down over the course of 4000+ years)

The wall behind is like a cement backer board for the tile in your bathroom. They pour cement behind the rocks to lock them to the wall, like grout goes behind your tile.

Annoying to watch. Didn’t even make it to the end. Also, won’t that whole wall be top heavy and come crashing forward? Will it be cemented or something?
6
u/fluffysmaster 1d ago
Hard to see but it may not be vertical but leaning a bit preventing a collapse.
And that perfect fit means no cement needed. Look at places like Machu Picchu.→ More replies (2)2
u/LabOwn9800 1d ago
Machu Picchu and Cusco the blocks touch the full way against their adjacent sides. So that’s like a sq foot or more of contact with each stone. This wall only the outsides touch for a bit.
→ More replies (1)2
u/SadiSusi 1d ago
Yes, every now and then they mix a bucket of the stuff and pour it behind. That's why the rock is pointy at the back. To free up space for the cement

The "proof" of this was walls of perfectly fitting rocks ...like this guy is doing. (Except it was done to a higher standard with bigger rocks)

Lame versions of stone masonry. The good ones don’t really cut the stone. It’s basically weird shaped bricks at this point.
