u/Objective-Elk2093 2d ago
Cleans the oil off the engine. It’s brakleen

I used to work with a Brakleen. Nice lady.

"Toora, loora, toora, loo-rye-aye... Come on Brakleen, oh you know what I mean..."
14
u/stupidcookface 2d ago
I think it's brakleen or carb cleaner, it's a solvent that gets oil and dirt off really well and it evaporates really quickly too so that's why it's safe for brakes (the brakleen, not sure about carb cleaner, but they seem similar). It is quite flammable though.
3
u/AFallingWall 1d ago
12 years professional mechanic. The flammable part is jot to be under estimated. Had a lube tech one time ask the foreman if he could have one of the empty/almost empty barles of it. Foreman said sure, and the dude took it home. Came back the next day (or maybe the day after?) With his arms covered in bandages and missing his eyebrows. He decided he wanted to use it as a "burn barrel" and took an angle grinder to it lol
2
u/ImtakintheBus 9h ago
Ooft. yeah. a lot of people forget that many metals are porous at the microscopic level and even when "empty" will outgas from the interior surface of the metal container. It's so common with propane tanks exploding when people want to cut them open, that the NPGA (National Propane Gas Association) issued specific training and instructions how to do it as so not to launch your giblets into the next field.

3
u/small_chinchin 1d ago
“Razzmatazz” and also “razzypoo” in other videos he posts are brakleen, assuming the chlorinated version since it dries/evaporates so quick

It’s brake clean basically. The can it is in is pressurized by air, it’s got a nipple on it like an air tool. The can is filled from a big 55 gallon drum usually that has a hand pump on it. It’s reusable so you don’t have to constantly throw away aerosol cans of brake clean. Wurth has their own setup that’s pretty cool, fills the can with fluid and pressurizes it all in one go from a fitting on the bottom, this is the cheaper version.

In the actual video he points out that he put on the previous oil filter himself, and that he gets that one off by hand, just to respond to people like yourself saying this.

u/EquivalentSpot8292 2d ago
There’s a tool for that, filter wrench. Can make one with an old belt and a screwdriver. Just in case anyone needs to get a stuck oil filter off :)
8
u/Agent_Orange81 1d ago
When it comes to stubborn filters, I prefer ye Olde "jam a long screwdriver through the housing" trick
10
u/nostickystuff 1d ago
I like to use a big pair of pliers and crush it a little so it has some character to grab.
25
u/kilodaneko 1d ago
The perfect solution for when you want to tear that fucking thing to pieces and be left with nothing but the sharp oil filter base, and the shameful realization that a strap wrench wouldn’t have put you in this position.
Don’t stab your oil filters.
2
u/Organindan 19h ago
Finally, i'm not the only one anymore to advise against the screwdriver stabbing
1
1
u/_Quasifrodo_ 6h ago
Can confirm. Tried this exactly once when it was too stuck for the filter wrench I had. Mangled the shit out of it, and still didn’t come out. Strap wrench was the solution
1
u/EquivalentSpot8292 11m ago
Yup, best way to end up machining your oil filter fitting on your block too (and that was using vice grips over a strap wrench)
1
u/miraculum_one 1d ago
Can also just get a metal one of the right size. It makes the whole thing easier. It also means you can torque the new one properly (yes, some people actually do that).
0
u/buddhamunche 1d ago
Oh suuuure because it’s always super easy to get the filter wrench on there and you always have the space you need to apply the proper torque
I’ve literally had to bang these fuckers off with a hammer before
2
u/Mtatk 1d ago
I just broke two fucking filter wrenches getting the old filter off my wife's car after Walmart put it on. I got a filter wrench for 15 bucks and cursed the whole time. I'll do it from now on
1
u/buddhamunche 1d ago
Yep absolutely no reason tighten them like that. I do it myself most of the time, hand tighten, never once had a problem and never will because they’re actually not made to be fucking cranked on there like that. It has threads and a gasket it’s not coming off unless you have the hands of a baby 🙄

BaNg! sLaP! ClIcK! It's some ASMR bullshit that TikTok made the norm. Throw in tight closeups and 0.10 second cuts, hyper-bright lighting and you got yourself a "banger" (apparently.)
It appeals to the short attention span crowd that is growing exponentially every day.

Oh ok, can I really power wash my engine indiscriminately? Love that.
9
u/Ok-Journalist7612 1d ago
Not indiscriminately.. you can really power wash your engine, but you don’t wanna go crazy with the cheese whiz and totally blast water into your air box and your fuse boxes you know, they sell cleaner that you can spray in your engine bay and you can just spray it on everything and do a quick rinse and yes, you’ll be completely fine. also don’t do this while it’s running. You don’t wanna suck water through your intake.

I was taught to use clean oil on the filter gasket rather than dirty because of the particles possibly interfering with a perfect seal.
27
u/Ok-Journalist7612 1d ago
Ehh… if you have particles large enough to interfere with a perfect seal on your oil filter, you have much more serious problems than a small oil leak..
1
u/wackbirds 1d ago
Could be true but let me ask you this; what reason would there be to NOT use clean oil, regardless of unlikely an issue with dirty oil would be?
4
u/beeedeee 1d ago
The reason would be that you're already under the car and haven't opened the oil to refill the crankcase yet but you have old oil right there from draining.
That being said, I always fill the filter with clean oil before I install it (unless it goes on the block sideways).
-1
u/wackbirds 1d ago
I meant what functional reason, not "if you're back under the car holding the filter and haven't opened the oil yet". I've never heard about the filling the filter with oil thing, that's interesting
0
u/beeedeee 1d ago
I don't go **back** under the car. I only go under once - I drain the oil, remove the filter, replace the filter, replace the plug, wipe up spills and then go up top to refill the oil. I'm too damned lazy to be getting up and down if I don't have to.
Filling the filter is supposed to avoid a dry start by having oil immediately available for lubrication rather than having to wait for the pump to pull it out of the pan, fill the filter, then begin protecting moving parts. It's sort of a religious debate among car folks about whether it's necessary or not. It is such a tiny level of effort to do it that I figure "why not?".
1
u/wackbirds 1d ago
I said "what reason would there be" as in, aside from a person having positioned themselves under the car with a dry filter and no access to anything but the dirty oil to lubricate the gasket, I didn't say anything about you personally doing anything or getting up and down over and over, it's like you're skimming what I'm saying and responding with a distorted idea of what my point was.
Everything I said was in relation to a person grabbing a swipe of dirty oil for the gasket, none of it had anything to do with your method of filling the filter with clean oil.
1
u/beeedeee 1d ago edited 1d ago
Man, you're taking this way too seriously. It's just a casual conversation why get all offended about it? You said you'd never heard of filling the filter and that it was interesting, so I was just explaining that.
0
u/wackbirds 1d ago
Once people start using "offended", "pressed" or "taking too seriously" I take that as my cue to to move on. Take care man.
4
u/Aggressive_Day2839 1d ago
I was also taught to fill the filter with clean oil before installing so the pump doesnt have a hard time when starting but have since learned its not exactly necessary

I would not be that cocky about not prefilling, might be fine on new cars, but do that to a car with a lot more miles or an older car and it can lead to trouble.
2
u/WonkeauxDeSeine 1d ago
For the amount of effort it takes, it's well worth it.
2
u/JoyTheGeek 1d ago
This exactly, I've done a few without it but its just so much less stressful to take the few extra minutes. Especially if youre doing your own work.
2
u/powerhammerarms 1d ago
Which part do you mean?
-2
u/JoyTheGeek 1d ago
When he points at the oil filter and says "wHeRE dOeS iT sAy tO PReFiLl" new engines can create enough suction that usually its fine, but more worn engines or older engines in general aren't the same.
2
u/AFallingWall 1d ago
Certs / tenure bud?

u/JoyTheGeek 1d ago
I went to tech college for automotive repair for 2 years and have been wrenching sense i was like 5, bud. I don't have my ASE 1-8 but I do have my 609 AC Cert.
1
u/AFallingWall 14h ago
Lmao 609 is open book, probably did that shit in class with the instructor.
The fill or no fill makes no difference, until you get to high capacity filters. Idk what you're talking about with "suction", but any oil pump fron the 80s up is capable of near-instantly filling the filter on crank. For the very short amount of time it's not filled, there is adequate lubrication from residual oil on start up.
1
u/JoyTheGeek 13h ago
Well not everyone works on only things post 1980. I work on plenty of 60s and 70s stuff.
1
u/powerhammerarms 1d ago
Oh the prefilling? This is me to me. I've been around for a while and have done a bit of small work on my vehicles but I have changed out an engine or two. I also worked as a lube tech, a service advisor, and a service manager. Maybe on some of the Euros we would prefill but other than that I've never heard of it. Even then I'm only guessing. Maybe on a tractor or something? It just sounds a little bit familiar but I can't recall where.
I have done and been around literally hundreds of oil changes and did not know that people would prefill. Lubing the seal, yes. I wonder if that's more of a regional thing.
1
u/JoyTheGeek 1d ago
Not sure, again on new stuff its not super common for anything bad to happen I just dont like his sarcasm. But I have seen videos of older cars like 70s jeeps where they didn't prefill and the pump didnt have enough power to prime the engine.

Prefill the filter, it doest have to topped up just get the paper saturated.
The only possible down side is that could introduce debris that's in the fresh oil container into the filter. I mean it's not like you can get dirt in the filter lifting the open end of the filter towards a dirty car underside full of dust and dirt.
