November Casual Coffee & Tea Event for the young crowd
Hi, me again from this post.
We have a monthly get together for the younger crowd (think like 25-35, not a perfect science ofc, I am 29F) to hang out once a month for a meetup to be social, meet people, do our hobbies together (write a book, crochet, craft, do a puzzle, play card games, etc.) in a casual capacity. We usually have a great turnout, so feel free to join us!
We will be having our fourth meeting at Friendly's in Berwyn (very close by) at 3pm on Saturday, November 7. We have a partiful link for RSVP so we can plan to be the most respectful to Friendly's. Signing up for the Partiful link will also send text reminders about the event.
I try to schedule these out as much in advance as possible to make sure people can make plans to come if needed, etc. That being said, I always post another reminder closer to the weekend of the event, but don't want to flood this reddit page too much/annoy our lovely mods.
I hope to see you there! Thanks all :)

Question Men’s Haircut Recommendations?
My long time hair stylist has stopped cutting hair and I’m looking for a new stylist/barber in the OP area. Any recommendations? Open to salons, barbers, anywhere non chain basically.

Question Optometry Recs
Is there an optometry center in Oak Park that lets you bring in your own frames and makes lenses for a decent price? I'm comparing services in OP with my usual optometry center and would love to know where the most cost efficient option is in the area.

Question places to practice rollerskating?
I just moved to oak park and I wanted to get back into my old hobby of rollerskating, but I’m not sure if there are any empty lots or roads that aren’t very busy that also have smooth concrete and aren’t busy because I am still a somewhat new skater. Anyone know of any good practice spots? Also anyone know if there are any skating groups in the area?

Instead of eliminating single family homes…
⚠️ ZONING ⚠️ ZONING ⚠️
Why isn’t the city looking to rebuild and renovate Madison Street and Roosevelt Road? This may have already been discussed. My apologies if so! My family and I kept seeing signs and I’ve only read like two forums on the subject. We are curious why Oak Park wouldn’t prioritize those two streets? I love that Oak Park has multiple boulevards for residents and guests. Businesses and shops on the bottom and however big or small apartments/condos with balconies on top. (I only mention balconies bc in New York City a balcony is pretty rare and it genuinely boosts a person’s morale)!
There was a proposal for Berwyn and Oak Park to partner to reimagine Roosevelt. Can anyone tell us why this isn’t prioritized over the single family house situation?

Question Couch Search
Hi! I am looking for a couch for my new apartment. I’ve already been to Bobs Furniture and Ashley furniture. What are some good other options that are similar price wise? Thank you in advance!

Roll to the Polls
Our local Bike/Walk advocacy group is hosting a “Roll to the Polls” event to encourage early voting.
We’ll be operating bike bus style where we stop at multiple locations along the route (area schools) to pick up riders so join wherever is most convenient for you.
The ride is scheduled for 10/25 from 1-2 PM and will also highlight some of the new bike infrastructure along the way.
The ride is open to all ages and abilities (we’ll keep about a 10-12 MPH pace). Already voted or have a plan to vote on Election Day? You’re still welcome to join and see the new bike infra along the route.
More details are available here: https://tracker.oak-park-bikes.com

Question Office space for rent
I’m a therapist and looking to find a space to meet with clients in Oak Park in the new year. I’ve had difficulty finding available office space online and wondering if anybody has suggestions for where to look?

Question Anyone (especially in SW OP) using Verizon for home internet?
We are looking to get off of AT&T fiber ($$$) and looking at adding wireless home internet to our Verizon account. But, generally I’ve read lukewarm reviews and I imagine it depends on location.
Any other recommendations for home internet? I’ve read good things about T-Mobile but it’s apparently not available here.

Question Lacking green space for dogs in Oak Park
UPDATE: Thanks to folks who provided some suggestions and their opinions on whether or not this is an issue for them. I want to provide a bit more context, as some useful questions arose in the comments. First, my points of reference for dog hours or grassy dog parks in urban areas are San Francisco (GGP), Berkeley (Ohlone), Manhattan (Central Park), and Brooklyn (Prospect Park). All old, densely populated cities. My desire to not drive every day to exercise my dog stems from not wanting to contribute to air pollution and local traffic. I have kids and love the OP parks system. Finally, FWIW, I was curious about people's feelings using the parks when nobody else was using them - i.e., mornings during school days. I'm hurt that my question to the community elicited a claim that I am acting entitled.
I was curious if anyone else is bothered by the lack of green space for dogs to be off leash in Oak Park?
We moved to OP a little over a year ago from the Bay Area and have been struck by the lack of grassy dog parks, dog runs, or off-leash allowances at any of the parks. We have a younger, athletic dog who is under voice command, socialized to dogs and humans, and doesn’t bark or dig. Yet, we’ve felt unwelcome in our neighborhood and are curious if anyone else feels this way.
Where we lived in the Bay Area, there were a handful of big, grassy dog parks and runs and dogs were also allowed off leash at regular parks if they were under voice command and weren’t bothering people. I’ve also heard from friends about “dog hours” in CA and NY where dogs are allowed off-leash from 7-9am.
Ultimately, I am curious: Does anyone else feel this way or is this just an “us-problem”? Genuinely enquiring about the culture here. Thanks!

Just Sharing Japanese knotweed
I don't understand why the Village is ok with this Japanese knotweed growing in front of Holley Court garage. I've told them about it, and they trimmed it a little? This is the 2nd year, just wait until it takes off! There's more growing in the side yard of the retirement home next door. They have no idea what's coming.
