When will my payroll update to reflect my Step Increase/Union Contract Increase/Lump Sum Payment/Geriatric Pay/Slug Pay. SAVE THIS LINK.

Literally no one except the 4 or 5 people on one team within OSC know if and when the payments will be posted. The calculations take time, and are checked manually. The people who check the link above will be the first to know!

"But, it should be automated"

Absolutely, ask your legislator to invest in a better payroll system. As it stands the change is made, then they go back in and make adjustments for: Retirements, Promotions, Voluntary Leave without Pay, Involuntary Leave without pay, Voluntary work reduction schedules, New Hiring and any other reason civil service can come up with to mess with it. THEN they recalculate everyone's salary using a different method to make sure the first one was correct and audit both. THEN we get the payment.

"The taxes are extortionate"

Correct. Lump sums are taxed at a higher rate, both federal and state. if our unions and civil service negotiated contracts before they expired we wouldn't be taxed at the higher rate for the back pay. (I THINK it's supposed to even out at the end of the tax year, but I'm not positive of that, someone can weigh in below who knows more. Frankly I understand why people are shocked when they do see it)

KEEP IN MIND: for PEF the last contract was settled on June 2, 2023, Payroll was processed on checks on August 30, 2023.

I (Or another Mod) might pin this post for a bit if enough people ask, the link is valuable and would reduce the number of posts demanding a date for back pay.

Former State Retirement Call Center and Benefit Calculation Agent With Deets

Hey everyone! I see lots of people talking about Retirement here, saying they've heard this rumor or that, they've been hung up on, they're frustrated, an Info Rep ate their puppy, etc. The common thread I'm seeing in these posts is that they're shocked that the unmitigated disaster that is the administration of the Retirement System is not a bigger scandal, more discussed, more public, etc. I would love to hear some stories and, best case scenario, put together some kind of petition. Let's start the conversation.

Interview questions

I have an upcoming interview for a Grade 25 position in Business Analysis and Quality Assurance. I haven’t had an interview in many years, so I’m wondering what types of questions they might ask for a Grade 25 position. If anyone has any insights or advice, please let me know!

Advice Wanted Career Growth

I’m new to the State (OA1 Grade 6) and saw the upcoming exam announcements that I believe I’ll be eligible for. I’m curious if I should take the Administrative Assistant 1 Trainee or Office Assistant 2 exam. Which of these titles would be better for career growth? I’m in Albany and currently working on my associates in business administration. Thank you.

Question Promotion salary question

I’m contemplating a position that’s an M4, I’m currently a 27. I know (think?) that equates to a 9% raise (3%+(1.5%x4)). The thing is I currently get a geo diff of $9k as an engineer, but the new m4 doesn’t get that salary treatment, plus I lose the PEF longevity, so I’m that $12k total on top of my “base” salary. My question is, is the promotion raise based on my base salary as a 27 or my salary plus the geo and longevity? Trying to determine if this is worth it.

CDTA STAR riders/union reps/stewards

Hello!

I was talking to a STAR driver about my frustration that there's such significant discounts to state employees for fixed-line and nothing for STAR. She said the universities had a similar set up until the disabled community argued that, because paratransit exists to create equal access to disabled customers, allowing discounts to fixed line and not STAR is discriminatory, and they won and got STAR discounts/possible universal access.

I'm still relatively new to state service, so I'm interested in coordinating with other STAR riders and possibly union stewards/reps to try and get some relief. Able-bodied state workers can ride as much CDTA as they want for $8/ paycheck. Just to get to/from work I'm paying $90-$100/mo. I've already spoken to some people in my office but the more the better.

Thinking about leaving for a few years

Any insight on if I were to leave (11 years in) to stay home with my kids for 3-5 years and then come back? I know my position wouldn’t be available but is this doable? If I leave at my grade I know I would start back at base pay but is it likely I’d be that grade again? Is it hard being reinstated? I have a few years extra I have to do anyways to reach 55 years old (I need 33 years to hit the age requirement) so that isn’t a deterrent. Thanks for any input!

Whats it like at ITS: Financial, Accounting, Auditing?

So I got a canvass letter for Grade 14 for Contract Management Specialist (when I should qualify for grade 18 because I have a higher degree)

What it like? Can it be remote or fully in person? Hows the work environment? Is it micromanaged?

Still responded regardless.

Buying Contacts

I'm a PEF member and was looking at buying contacts for the first time. Previously, I would buy from 1800 contacts but I called them and was told they don't accept our insurance. So I wanted to know what was the cheapest way to purchase contacts.

Traineeship Rate Question

Recently had my 12 month review in a 14, 16 to 18 traineeship and received an “exceeding expectations” I know when I had my 6 month review and got this I got a slight pay increase, and I know I’m supposed to advance to the g16 rate since it’s been one year. Will I get a little above the g16 hire rate since I received an exceeding review?

Apologies if this has been asked in the past, this is all new to me :)

Advice Wanted Differences between 1 year and 2 year traineeships

Hey friends. I have something that I'm a little stumped on that I'd love some advise on. I'm currently nearing the final like 3 months of my traineeship that was one year. I'm about to interview soon for a position that is a two year traineeship. Is there any big difference besides having the title for longer or what would I have to deal with as a two year traineeship compared to one, if there was any difference. Possibly going from a TSR to a TT1 position but I only qualify under the trainee 1 position. Thank you! :)

For those who went like me, make sure you alert ABC financial. I don’t trust them to stop charging me.

Heard from a friend at work yesterday. Will confirm again today.

I hope they replace it soon. I enjoyed working out during the day.

EDIT: so apparently they cut off billing to accounts so people shouldn’t have to worry about ABC financial charging your account.

If you’re like me on the HMO plan, I took an invoice record at the end of the year/semiregular basis and submitted to my insurance for wellness reimbursement. You can call 888-827-9262 or email customercare@abcfinancial.com for more info.

Question about Section 52.6

I used the Section 52.6 section to get a promotion from grade 23 to 25 about 6 years ago. I'm still in that current position. Am I able to use the 52.6 law to get promoted from 25 to 27 now or do I need to be on the promotion list?
