Should CEOs of small counties make 5x the earnings of a full-time worker?

A MendoLocal.News review of 2024 state payroll records for the 25 smallest counties — Mendocino, at about 88,600 residents, is the 21st-smallest — found a median chief executive salary of roughly $227,000 and a median county counsel salary of about $187,000. Against those 2024 figures, Mendocino's new CEO salary would trail only Napa and Yuba, and its new county counsel salary would trail only Napa, the largest of the 25 counties.

Mendocino's median earnings for full-time, year-round workers are about $57,900, slightly below the middle of the 25 counties. Antle's 2024 salary equaled about 3.8 times that figure, in line with the 3.8 median for chief executives in the small counties. Pierce's new salary works out to about 4.7 times what a typical full-time worker in the county earns, and Rossi's to about 4.7 times.

Set against what the other small counties paid their officials in 2024, the most recent year with complete payroll data, Pierce’s ratio would rank fourth among chief executives in California’s smallest counties, behind Glenn, Yuba, and Napa counties, and Rossi’s would be the highest among county counsel, ahead of Siskiyou County’s. Pay in those counties may have risen since 2024, which could change these rankings.

US Cellular to T Mobile issues

I’ve had US Cellular forever because it was the only carrier that consistently had service in remote areas of Nor Cal. Now T Mobile has taken over. It’s been a few months and understandably there were some hiccups during the transition. Fine. Now the dust seems to have settled, and the service is basically gone. I can’t use my phone at my house. What inspired me to make this post was I looked at my home screen and it said AT&T, now that’s a carrier that has never worked in my area, so, if that’s what I’m now connected to it makes sense that service is terrible/non existent. I’ve called T Mobile and they have no explanation or expected time it might get better if ever. No, we’re fixing a tower or upgrading or anything along those lines. Anybody have any intel or insight? Thinking our only option is to switch to Verizon which will at least work at my house. Transitioning seems like a pain, but, kind of need our phones to work.

Is Uber or taxi actually available from Yreka to Medford in 2026?

Uber shows availability from Yreka to Medford, however that may be advertising optimism. Has anyone had success getting a ride from Yreka to Medford in 2026?

Carmel by the Sea questions

My partner and I are getting married but instead of a normal wedding, we’ve decided we’re going to get eloped and then follow our marriage with a trip to celebrate and get our family together down the line (thinking 2028). I’m hoping to get some questions answered about Carmel by the Sea because this was my idea for the destination.

We’re from Minnesota but our family is spread all over the place- mostly in the west half of the US but some in Europe. We’ve also had a lot of loss in both of our families in the past couple years and we’d really like to get everyone together to take photos and spend time with one another. The plan we’ve come up with is us being there for five days but only requiring everyone to be there for one day- the celebration day. On the celebration day, we’d rent out a pizza place or something, have dinner, and follow that with family photos. People can stay for as long or as little as they’d like beyond that.

When I started planning this trip, I thought Carmel by the Sea would be perfect because it’s something everyone could enjoy- beaches with a beautiful ocean view, lots of marine wildlife and hikes, good food, cute atmosphere, places like San Francisco and redwoods nearby, wineries, etc- but I’m just now seeing some conversations about Carmel being a place for only wealthy folks similarly to Martha’s Vineyard. My family isn’t rich and aren’t the type of people to spend money on designer goods or michelin star restaurants, but, everyone in my family is getting to the point in their lives that a trip to a beautiful place to celebrate our wedding trip is totally feasible. There’s plenty to do there besides shopping right? I saw a TikTok of someone saying it’s only fun there if you’re rich, is that true? Is that just because they’re picking expensive activities or am I underestimating the amount of lower priced activities (like $15 to do that beautiful drive by the beach is a lower priced activity) to do there? I feel like the hotels and restaurants are a normal price for places like this and I don’t think that would be too much of an issue so am I missing something? Please be brutally honest.

Which route would you take?

Tomorrow, my coworker and I will be driving from Arcata to Yreka. I’ve taken this trip a few times for work, and I usually take the northernmost route through Oregon.

How is the drive on 299 and 3? Are there any rest areas or services, or is it pretty sparse? Also, how are the roads? I’m a confident but careful mountain driver, and usually go the speed limit.

We are in a rental car and did not had great cell service driving from Ukiah to Eureka. I’m considering going to Redding and up 5, since I’m more familiar with that route.

Just looking for a route that has rest areas, gas stations, or other services in case we need a restroom or have car trouble.
