The Downward Spiral Someone at The Atlantic is a fan

Intellectual property aside, Trent would be proud. These things look like they'd fit well in one of the mid-90s music videos. Somebody get William Morris Endeavor on the phone for a crossover.

Question What NIN song is this?

This YouTube channel is somebody that seemingly was friends with or touring with NIN in the mid 90s. I think the person that recorded most of the footage was James' girlfriend but I think that's a different person than the lady that runs the Youtube channel... Either way, lots of interesting videos but a lot of them focus on James! RIP.

This video of the mixing board and equipment in the Sharon Tate house has a song playing over it that I cannot put my finger on and it's driving me nuts! Please help? TIA!

Question What instrument did they exactly used for the Ruiner solo part?

I know this may sound dumb and all, which is why I have always been curious about a very specific part on Ruiner, mainly for how it is like ear candy to me in the 3:59 or 4:00 part to the end the background instrument that repeats over and over. I have been wondering what the instrument is. Yes, I did try to search it up, but it gave me the wrong answer, and it made me a bit upset. I just want to put down this question that has been stuck in my head for so long.

Question what would your top 10 NIN songs of all time be?

my choices would be

  1. Closer - i used to dislike this song the first time i heard it, wasn't a fan of the chorus but now i realise just how greatly put-together the instrumental is, probably Trent's best layering work to date.

  2. Vessel - Closer but on YZ. the only thing it's above Closer would be the chorus, not much else, i just love the album and this song

  3. Adrift and at Peace - my favourite new song on Still, it's everything i wanted from a continuation of La Mer, which almost made list. beautiful song overall, it doesn't need to be hyper complicated to work

  4. Satellite - i adore Hesitation Marks so much, and this song sums the whole album pretty well imo. intro-chorus-verse-chorus-quiet section-buildup-outro. the whole build up section where all the instruments add one after another is perfect, also very catchy and memorable chorus.

  5. The Background World - a seamless transition from Not Anymore brings you to one of the best closers, the repeating outro is kind of scary and calming at the same time. one more chorus and it would be top 5 for sure.

  6. Ruiner - best song on TDS imo, as well as the story turning point after the solo, where "nothing can stop me now" loses it's final bit of hopefulness. i love how the synths in the outro are louder than the vocals which kind of feels like the main character can't defeat the Ruiner, great lyrics and solo

  7. All The Love In The World - i consider this the best album opener, even though openers tend to be some of the best songs on NIN albums (Head Like a Hole, Somewhat Damaged, Copy of a). the main thing i adore about this song is how it goes from " why do YOU get all the love" to " WHY do you get all the love", honestly the whole "you" concept being addressed in Only makes it way better.

  8. While I'm Still Here + Black Noise - a both gorgeous and horrifying end song duo of Hesitation Marks, While I'm Still Here is sounds way more peaceful and cozy than the lyrics should make it sound. some of the best lyrics Trent has ever written are followed up by one of the most disturbing instrumentals. i like to think that this moment leads to The Downward Spiral, where the person that was supposed to hold near the main character turned out to be Mr. Self Destruct, pretty neat

  9. The Day The World Went Away - honestly, both The Fragile and Still versions are stunning in their own ways, but i don't think i can say much more. there isn't that much going on here in contrast to other songs but that doesn't stop it from being hauntingly beautiful.

Honorable Mentions - La Mer, Shit Mirror, Sunspots, Discipline, The Big Come Down

  1. Zero Sum - the best song ever made. best chorus in the discography. sums up YZ perfectly and it becomes more real every day. but the best part has to be the outro. nothing more to say honestly.

what would be your choices?

The Downward Spiral Five of the greatest songs produced by Flood

Closer gets an spot with “Closer” at spot 2 and anything from Downward Spiral is fantastic but obviously “Closer” is the obvious choice for Flood’s work with NIN! Broken is my favorite project that Flood did with them and I enjoy the contributions he did on Pretty Hate Machine.

Broken Behind the Scenes for Happiness in Slavery (1992 - Jon Reiss)

The death chair has been captured many times. Including this time, with him and his girlfriend and in action in the actual music video of course. I wonder where that went. Probably a landfill. Someone could mistake it for a hunk of industrial junk. Honestly for the vibe of the music video that's not a bad compliment lol.

Trent is nowhere in this photo. Only Bob Flanagan and the torture assistants (evil) who did the props and stuff (excuse for real torture!) I notice one of them is holding a flashlight up to him while the camera is barely in shot. Probably not in takes since the people in frame.

Very cool set.
